Video: How Fast Can a Bike Go?

Jul 25, 2013
by Karl Burkat

Experiments in speed. Inspired by those great men of the salt flats, those men that in the 60s pushed the Land Speed Record from the 300s up towards the 600mph mark in jet-propelled cars built in their sheds. We decided to do what we do: build a bicycle, but this time, in the spirit of those pioneers of speed, build it to see how fast we could go…

"You get to the point where you really don't give a sh!t, you just pedal until the wheels come off."
I'll get that tattoed across my chest, so when the paramedics find me at the bottom of the hill, they can at least have a good laugh.

Proper British pluck. Grow a mustache and you'll blast past 100mph!!! Great project.
  • 5 2
He broke 100 on the trackstand without a stache Wink

WTF does it matter if he's towed by a car? It's totally dumb. Recumbents are faster & mofos rip those f*ckers up to 80 mph+ without drafting an air pollution machine. Dumb dumbdy dumb DUMB!!!!
  • 14 0
 but you're riding a recumbent....

LOL^. He is on the wrong site(freeride-forever). Enjoy yourself nevertheless bud. WHEELS ROLE!

Drafting a car for speed is as stupid as being towed by one to hit a jump. If you can't get the job done under your own power and/or with the aid of gravity then you taint or tarnish the beauty of the bicycle.

^ one of the most legendary shots was Nathan Rennie jumping over the RV in NWD being towed into the moto jump... he's not that lame as this roost shows encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS6_b-Eud7hBfr_931fQEi4e-2wRapi3IapyvF7ppJP09-HbtJTQg

Brilliant video and I'm not trying to take away from anything the guy has done, but it would be interesting to put the likes of Chris Hoy on that bike and see what they could do. But then it seems the video is about how fast he can go on his bike so I totally respect that, keep it up!

get Dan Atherton on it, so far on the Cycle Show challenge (ITV4) he has beaten all the other cyclists from all the other disciplines (much to the obvious annoyance of the roadie presenter Smile )

HOW FAST??? Don' touch the brakes and add a little BRAPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!
  • 11 1
who needs a pro rider? he got to the top speed of the chain ring didnt he? no other person could have gone faster on that bike
  • 2 0
Dan Atherton has the record on the program, but he doesn't have the overall record, this guy does (2 secs faster than Dan): www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jgyq8Zkp10Y

some could arguably do a faster cadence (theo bos maybe? armstrong?)
  • 1 0
What dan done? I've youtubed it but I can't find anything.

Sorry for fucking up that gear change buddy.

such a great video! i dont think i would have the guts to trust that car at that speed with such little tolerance for the bumper

Bit of trivia for you, Tom won a UK Downhill national or 2 back in the 90's. He's from my neck of the woods, good all round bike rider, amazing bike builder, and a top guy.

as a roadie and an MTB'er i'm quite impressed by the lack of abuse because it's essentially a road bike piece, well done pinkbike community .

Pretty impressive. Though I don't know why they don't use a disc wheel or even a wheel with a deeper rim. It's all off the shelf stuff. They should also add a roller to the bumper of the lead car, he'll be able to get close and kiss it without a catastrophic ending.
  • 1 0
at those speeds, i would think a bumper would be a must!

This guy is going to smash 100 mph on a runway .he has the fire in he's eyes you can see he has the drive and the passion and the bug to push the limits . Gooooooooooooooooo
  • 4 2
100mph on the rollers with no wind resistance is one thing, but on the flat and in the elements, Im not sure. I'd love to see what he can do, but i'd be surprised if he hits 100.
  • 2 0
I'm sure he will have a tinker with the bike and modify the new car . Ill have a sports mans bet with you :-) I say he will just get over the 100 mph mark . The challenge is set :-)

using the car isnt a true indication of how fast the bike can go, only a test under his own power will show that. otherwise, whats the point? you might as well stand behind a 747 when its taking off and say you went 600mph.
  • 1 0
i think the speed records come out of the innovation and methods/techniques you create to achieve them, these guys decided to create a rolling barrier, some go for full on aero bodies and helmets, one way or another speed records always try to beat natural elements, its all part of the overall challenge

I figure he should swap his rear sprocket for an 11t, it'd make a big difference.
  • 2 0
those are some scary speeds in a car let alone on bikes and snowboards - respect!!

Great film and more power to him, in 1995 I did 75mph one handed on a kona kula (the first ever kula, gold one) holding onto a mini metro van dem plas through pure practicality, coming back from Derby BMX track to Ripley with mates we got 2 bikes and 3 lads in the metro and I opted for the tow, I became a local legend for a bit, the Kurb side drain grates gave me the wobble on though. Sketch.

I'm just surprised he didn't go for a higher profile wheelset. That would have cut the drag down even further.
