Experiments in speed. Inspired by those great men of the salt flats, those men that in the 60s pushed the Land Speed Record from the 300s up towards the 600mph mark in jet-propelled cars built in their sheds. We decided to do what we do: build a bicycle, but this time, in the spirit of those pioneers of speed, build it to see how fast we could go… donhoubicycles.com spindleproductions.co.uk Director | Greg Hackett Editor | Tim Swaby Production Company | Spindle Productions Sound Recordist | Adam Williams Camera Assistant | Greg Harris Production Assistant | Dickon Ireland Aerial Cameras | Ben Kenobe Ben Sturgess Chris Ridley Photographer | Tristan Conor Holden Composer | Daniel J. "You get to the point where you really don't give a sh!t, you just pedal until the wheels come off." I'll get that tattoed across my chest, so when the paramedics find me at the bottom of the hill, they can at least have a good laugh.
WTF does it matter if he's towed by a car? It's totally dumb. Recumbents are faster & mofos rip those f*ckers up to 80 mph+ without drafting an air pollution machine. Dumb dumbdy dumb DUMB!!!!
Drafting a car for speed is as stupid as being towed by one to hit a jump. If you can't get the job done under your own power and/or with the aid of gravity then you taint or tarnish the beauty of the bicycle.
Brilliant video and I'm not trying to take away from anything the guy has done, but it would be interesting to put the likes of Chris Hoy on that bike and see what they could do.
But then it seems the video is about how fast he can go on his bike so I totally respect that, keep it up!
get Dan Atherton on it, so far on the Cycle Show challenge (ITV4) he has beaten all the other cyclists from all the other disciplines (much to the obvious annoyance of the roadie presenter )
Dan Atherton has the record on the program, but he doesn't have the overall record, this guy does (2 secs faster than Dan): www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jgyq8Zkp10Y
Bit of trivia for you, Tom won a UK Downhill national or 2 back in the 90's. He's from my neck of the woods, good all round bike rider, amazing bike builder, and a top guy.
Pretty impressive.
Though I don't know why they don't use a disc wheel or even a wheel with a deeper rim. It's all off the shelf stuff.
They should also add a roller to the bumper of the lead car, he'll be able to get close and kiss it without a catastrophic ending.
This guy is going to smash 100 mph on a runway .he has the fire in he's eyes you can see he has the drive and the passion and the bug to push the limits . Gooooooooooooooooo
100mph on the rollers with no wind resistance is one thing, but on the flat and in the elements, Im not sure. I'd love to see what he can do, but i'd be surprised if he hits 100.
I'm sure he will have a tinker with the bike and modify the new car . Ill have a sports mans bet with you :-) I say he will just get over the 100 mph mark . The challenge is set :-)
using the car isnt a true indication of how fast the bike can go, only a test under his own power will show that. otherwise, whats the point? you might as well stand behind a 747 when its taking off and say you went 600mph.
i think the speed records come out of the innovation and methods/techniques you create to achieve them, these guys decided to create a rolling barrier, some go for full on aero bodies and helmets, one way or another speed records always try to beat natural elements, its all part of the overall challenge
Great film and more power to him, in 1995 I did 75mph one handed on a kona kula (the first ever kula, gold one) holding onto a mini metro van dem plas through pure practicality, coming back from Derby BMX track to Ripley with mates we got 2 bikes and 3 lads in the metro and I opted for the tow, I became a local legend for a bit, the Kurb side drain grates gave me the wobble on though. Sketch.
Pointless. One could mount a roller on a pick-up truck, and drive around with 100mph.
Wind resistance is the biggest factor in fast road cycling. Simply taking it away doesn't make it more challenging.
Really nice video though.
