Alpinestars Alps 2 Knee Pads - Review

Alpinestars Alps 2 knee pads

Many of the latest crop of knee pads are super lightweight affairs that slip on and rely on visco-elastic cushions that harden upon impact. For those wanting a little more protection while still retaining the ability to put in a couple of hours saddle time without discomfort, the Alps 2 knee pads from the Italian brand Alpinestars could fit the bill. Described as a "highly flexible and lightweight knee guard constructed from breathable laminated rip-stop, PE foam and poly-mesh," the pads achieve are CE Level 1 certified, and there are two sizes to choose from. MSRP: $64.95.

Extra padding to either side of the main knee pad shows they're not a token gesture of protection.

The mesh liner helps keep things in place and I barely had to use the Velcro straps to keep them steady.

Performance

The pre-shaped knee pad gave a very comfortable fit from the outset. The compression-fit liner and the silicone backing strips at the top and bottom of the pad helped to keep things in place; I barely had to tighten down the top elastic strap, and the lower calf strap needed next to zero tension. Not having to strap them down tightly is a comfort bonus on long rides and will help with all important blood flow.

I did develop a couple of small hotspots and soreness on the front of my knee during really long, sweaty rides but the compression-fit liner between the back of the legs and straps avoided any rubbing or pinching here. The liner has a small cutaway behind the knee that helps to keep things cool but it fits closely and won't let in the loam or mud.

Other test riders did complain of the silicone backing pulling at their hairy legs, making it feel like their

girlfriend was attacking them with an epilator, especially when taking them on and off. There were also comments that they could get sweaty around the knee, but I think this is on par for the level of protection the Alps 2 pads provide.

Pinkbike's Take
bigquotesSilicone backing might not be for the extra-hairy legged amongst us, but it sure helps them to stay in place. A good compromise of fit, weight and protection, the Alps 2 pads are ideal for people still looking for a little more safety than some of the latest super light, minimalist, pedal-all-day knee pads. - Paul Aston

So you are saying I could have the best knee pads in the world... If and if I shave my legs?
  • 6 0
Maybe Alfinestar should have included a razor as part of the package.

Just shave from below the knee to above the knee and it'll be reet.

So, you'll end up with a leg stripe?

I really like that combo mesh liner and Velcro strap. Looks like the best of both worlds in terms of breathability and a secure fit that won't drag down off the leg in a crash. I kneed these too!

What I really want to know is how these compare to the dainese trail skins!? I'm a lifelong dainese wearer but these look real good too, am going to purchase one or the other pretty soon!
  • 2 0
Trail skins are true all-day "pedal-in" pads, you can wear them throughout the ride. They have widespread venting plus much simpler construction, that means more lightweight and more comfortable. I highly reccommed to go for Dainese

I love my Dianese. Fit is tricky though, try to test fit first, or be prepared to buy multiple sizes & send back or sell the ones that don't fit. I ended up with a size larger than their size chart, but as they've stretched, I'm running out of velcro to keep them in position. Mediums seemed a bit too tight though, like they would rub on my knees too much on long rides. Part of the problem may be that I'm right between sizes when measuring my leg, though.

Thx for the feed back, sounds like ill be sticking with dainese still, I have the skinniest sparrow legs ever so the smallest size possible always fits me lol
