London Bike Show - Randoms

Feb 14, 2015
by Paul Aston
Between the 12th and 15th of February The London Bike Show is held at the Excel arena, just a stones throw from loads of bankers in Canary Wharf, a cross-river gondola and a really big, expensive white dome. Here's a few randoms from day one to get started.

Taking the proverbial mountain goat by the horns
I quickly took the Swiss mountain goat by the horns and got stuck in to the show

London Bike Show 2015 Superstar Components
Superstar is a UK brand that is rapidly expanding. Their products aren't anything extraordinary, just good quality, loads of colours and a very competitive price point. Although they do believe that they own the most state of the art wheel-building machine in the UK, and offer the widest range of rims and hubs too.

London Bike Show 2015 Superstar Components
Now starting to produce product in-house, the machines have been turning out chainrings, 10-speed cassette expanders and bash-guards. More substantial machinery is en-route to the Lincoln firm and they are looking to start machining their own pedals and other parts. The decision was bought about after selling out of pedals last year, with a 3-month delay on the next boat coming in. Making more components in-house will help to cut lead-times, improve quality and maintain value

They had these prototype oval chainrings on display. Owner Neil Wilkinson likes a practical joke or two. Can you spot the deliberate mistake?

London Bike Show 2015 World Champion Manon Carpenter being interviewed by Anna Glowinski in the Q and A sessions
Manon Carpenter was the first on the stage for the Q and A sessions with Anna Glowinski, from ITV's 'The Cycle Show'. Loads of other guests were lined up including Peaty and Josh 'Ratboy' Brycland walking evenly on a healthy looking paw

I'm so gutted I missed them at SohoBikes the other day. Apparently Warner was there too. I'd have had a heart attack if I'd seen all 3 of em together, definitely too much epicness in one place.

Wait what's wrong with the chainrings?
  • 3 2
Probably the 40t Shimano avaliable part.
  • 1 1
Doesn't look like the black one is oval ?

flag MrKona13 (Feb 14, 2015 at 2:21) (Below Threshold)
Bottom left says 40 teeth and "British" folks have missing teeth.
  • 4 3
The chainrings are short a few teeth.
  • 93 18
We have more teeth than your average redneck you prick.
  • 19 3
shhhhh They might have seen the Jeremy Kyle showSmile
  • 4 1
I count 32t instead of 40. Where are the 8 remaining?
  • 11 1
40t is for the Expander rings not pictured, the rings pictured are chainrings.
  • 12 7
Let me clarify, bottom left is comparing 40 teeth Shimano or SRAM and I only count 32 teeth. The caption said "practical joke".

Can't tell if you're mad or not by call someone "prick"
  • 2 0
I think XPR Expander ring, instead of XTR Expander ring? The description says it's Shimano specific. XPR is rifle (/gun).
  • 2 1
No, Google Superstar XPR and that's correct. XPR = X- sPander-Ring
  • 2 1
You're right, I'm out of guesses then. This is a hard one haha
  • 3 0
i cant spot any deliberate mistake at all.
would it be something silly like the oval is wrong and would be no use at all.
or the bcd is wrong ?
  • 3 2
I can't see no deliberate mistake in the pic either, nothing obvious anyway. It must be a mistake or something... Other than the sign saying Expander ring but I just presumed they are out of the picture.
  • 1 3
Yeah they're not oval are they. Got it.
  • 12 2
The chainrings are oval. It's just that the bolt pattern is rotated 90 degrees to what it should be, so it would be really hard to push over the top of the stroke, and really easy on the down stroke.
  • 1 1
Yeah actually looking at them again I think they must be oval due to the bolt spacing.
  • 8 18
flag chezotron (Feb 14, 2015 at 6:51) (Below Threshold)
As usual the British teeth are all fooked.
  • 3 1
Is it that the bolt holes are spaced in an "oval" pattern as well and wouldn't fit anything?
  • 1 0
I don't think so, look at the 4 bolt holes and you can see that 2 of the holes are closer in from the edge so they are all in a square.
  • 6 0
I think that the practical joke is that there is no practical joke, and all of us got fooled.
  • 1 0
Maybe there isn't enough space for the chain to fall on the chainring correctly on the lower parts? It seems like the hole is so close to the teeth, that the chain would probably sit on the chain-ring-bolt-tabs (?) of the crankset than on the chainring.
  • 1 0
From which side of the spider will those rings be mounted? I only know SRAM, but not Shimano. Looks strange with the thread on the outside.

I need that camper.
  • 2 0
 Xxx
  • 2 0
Hey Mattin, thought of both of those things myself. Yeah I think maybe there is no joke and we have been looking at this in completely the wrong way. Or maybe the text is under the wrong picture.
  • 2 0
"Wait what's wrong with the chainrings?"

Is it that they are pretty close to being Absolute Black copies?
  • 1 0
Maybe the guy who commented about them being 'Phototypes' is correct. I'm not entirely sure what that is but I have an idea. After all he does work for Giant bikes so he probably knows his stuff.
  • 1 0
lol lol The picture really says Proto" though and not "" Photo". Unless I missed his point somehow?
  • 1 0
Yeah I know that. But just thought he knew something I didn't...lol I've run out of options..Big Grin
  • 8 0
I dont get the whale pun at all
  • 2 0
Good to see square teeth on the oval rings, I hope they put them on the normal narrow wide because they don't work very well as they are. I've gone back to Blackspire. I can't see the deliberate mistake either.
  • 3 1
Superstar chainrings are really good I just got a 30 tooth narrow wide for £25 the quality is good and no chain drops as yet
  • 2 0
Got one 30 today, seems as good as the 32. Finish is little under RF ones, seems heavier also, but overall very good value.
