SNEAK PEEK: 2009 Mongoose Nugget – Prototype Shots

Mar 1, 2008
by Andrew Cho
Come check out the brand new prototype Slopestyle bike Mongoose has developed for the 2009 line up!

The introduction of the EC-X in 2006 spurred the idea for the new Mongoose Nugget model. The EC-X was the bike that led Eric Carter to numerous UCI podium finishes. With increasing demands in the freeride market, more specifically for an all purpose, slopestyle and play bike, the word of a production slopestyle bike was the talk of the office at Mongoose HQ in Madison, Wisconsin. While the current EC-X provided a nimble, weight conscious ride, I had been thinking that 2.8” of rear-wheel travel was just shy of being enough for the demanding terrain of today’s slopestyle courses. Having ridden the Khyber Super and the EC-X all season, I knew that Darren Salsbury (Product Developer @ Mongoose) had the geometry and the weight down pat and that it was just a matter of morphing the two bikes together to create a successful slopestyle bike. In a phone conversation with Darren he had asked me to list some characteristics that would make this the “perfect bike” and with no hesitation, I gave him my wish list. To my surprise Darren had already included many of the features that I had wished for, inferring from the R&D data gathered from the past few years. By the end of the brainstorming session we were in complete agreement and the Nugget was officially born.

Also included in the feedback process were my team members Andrew Neethling, EC and Steve Romaniuk. We all managed to deck out the Nugget like an Audi with new features like heated leather interior…haha - not really but the Nugget is ISCG compatible, MAXLE (135mm), and has a completely redesigned, solid drop out and a newly designed shock mount.

2009 Mongoose Nugget

The concept behind the Nugget was to combine the longer travel and strength of the AM/FR bike - take the Khyber and morph it with the nimble geometry and precision handling of the EC-X. The Nugget provides a supple 3.9” of travel rear travel via a Fox Racing Shox RP23. Obviously, no Mongoose full-suspension bike would be complete without the use of the FreeDrive Technology and with no exception the Nugget will have you effortlessly pedaling in front of all your friends (with no pedal bob or brake jack!). Couple this impressive suspension design with ProPedal and with a flip of the lever and you have a bike that nearly eliminates pedal bob and provides a ride that's got a bottomless feel to it. You should expect to see the Nugget at a Mongoose dealer near you later this year ready to go for the 09 season!

Nugget Facts (size small):
The Nugget weighs in at 7.8lbs with a rear shock (FOX RP23).
Chain stay length: 17.25”
Seat tube length: 16.5”
Top tube length: 21.25”

I’d just like to thank Sarah & Darren @ Mongoose, Mark & Mike @ Fox Racing Shox, Chad @ Race Face, Clayton & Len @ Sun Ringlé for making this possible!

they're coming up in the world haha!

seriously a 17.25 inch stay length? that's stupid long

Who cares if you live in Canada Mongoose is unavailable and they refuse to support the bikes. I wasted over 2 hours in phonecalls and emails trying to get a rebuild kit for the proprietary suspension parts no one at Mongoose would send us parts for a customers repair worst service ever cept crackandfail

at first i was embarrased to work at a mongoose dealer, but anymore, and knowone should be ashamed to check this hot bitch out! "its not what you ride, but how you ride!"

It's all about perceptions. Mongoose never stopped making sick bikes, it's just that their parent company Pacific started putting the Mongoose name on crap bikes that were selling in Walmart. Mongoose didn't make crap. Someone made crap and tried to call it Mongoose. Big difference. The high-end offerings from Mongoose have always been competitive.

wow i've been waiting for this bike hopefully they spec it like it is.... although I could handle a dual ring on this thing with a drs or lrp... I'd rid this bitch cross country.

I have a friend that has one of the '07 versions of this bike. Every 20 min. he has to stop and re-tighten all the pivot bolts before they fall completely out. I hope they fix the problem
  • 2 0
the original bolt kits with the 07 mongooses didn't have enough stength they fixed that problem and sent out better hardware for them just make sure u use the good blue locktight on them and they will not come loose
  • 1 0
plus the ones that would come loose where the bolts at the drop outs. They have eliminated those bolts completely and made a solid drop out. Stiffer and stronger. I really want one of these. Who cares about the chain stays, go cry about an inch difference somewhere else.

mongoose is owned by pacific cycles they also own gt and schwinn so they have alot of buying power to deliver good producs at a cheap price, because they buy in bulk besides the walmart bikes are were the 5-9 year olds get their bikes if they can have a bike with a sticker on them that has a big name on it then they are happy and getts them their skills so when they are old enought they can get a goos bike
  • 1 2
get a good bike not a goos bike lol
  • 6 1
 looks really nice promising

This is exactly what we want. I just hope Mongoose won't mess it up adding to many colours to it or big names all over the frame (this is not what we want). We, the people, want to keep things simple and I can surely tell this bike is gonna sell if Mongoose follows this trend. The bike is good as it is (either black or white anno will do), the cobra headset shows up and I can see how the head tube angles shorten up to improve the frame slope stile capabilities (not to mention the very wise rear linkage which, I am certain, will reduce all pedalling induced bobbing: I can see this most clearly in my head just because I understand how it works). I am going to say it again. This bike will sell if Mongoose is wise enough to keep things simple and sell the bike as it is. The bike's geometrics can be improved, but please do not mess up with colours and names (we're just so fed up with it).

they wont, ive seen the 2009 up close. Its gonna be so dope!

Its 2020 and I just bought one of these Nugget frames to build up. I don't care if its old school...it's gonna be awesome! It'll be newer than my 03 HollowPoint MTX and the same year as my Scapegoat. I figure by 2030 I'll be riding bikes from around 2020.

they look super nice but i dunno when ever i think mongoose i think of the zellers/walmart cheap bikes or the scooters and it makes them seem cheap to me even though there arent i dont think ill ever get one but thoose still look super juicy Big Grin

It's true that Mongoose, GT, Schwinn, and Canondale are all owned by the same company, but there are two different divisions that make these bikes, and trust me they put years of testing, reviewing, and designing into these bikes. I mean their company is on the line for these, so they have to compete with the other guys or lose. They know about the walmart branding thing, and I strongly believe they are trying to take back the names for good, for the reasons they had gotten big in the first place. Everyone i know that sees these bikes in person, Mongoose or GT, are frickin' amazed. Plus they stick by their words, everything has amazing warranties and their not scared to listen to you like other stick up the butt companies.

Plus if you look at a Walmart Mongoose you won't find the double M logo.

i think they should put anouther 2 or 3 centimeters of at the back because the ecx is 90 or somen do if your looking for a bike in that regon then they have that and there are lots of other componys already in that range but if the put that little bit more on then there isnt many slopestyle bikes around that travel in the market so they could pick out anouther coner in the market because lets face it if they come up agaist kona or some other big company they arnt going to win because of all these stupid people who think mongoose cant make a desent bike when actuly i have one and it has a way better feel than any other bike that i have riden like it

hi guys i have ditch my kona and go for a mongoose. i'm enjoying every bit of the black diamond triple... the kona feels like shit when compares to the goose. btw i used to love the kona before i try on the goose. i bet those who have negative comments have not even sit on one before, rite?
