The Syndicate 2017 - Episode 4 - Greg Minnaar

Sep 5, 2017
by Pinkbike Staff

For the final episode of the season, we spend some time with the longest-tenured rider on the Syndicate, Greg Minnaar. Following a quick round of golf and a rainstorm in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Greg heads to Morzine, France for a bit of testing with Tripod and backyard bonfire-building. Then it's on to Val di Sole for the close of the World Cup season!

This was one of the raddest wc seasons in a while solid battle between gwin and minnaar!

Rad video, so cool that they talked about the frame breaking as much as they did. When you see the slow-mo of it, I'm just glad it was the bike that hit the pole and not Greg!

Huge respect to SC for including the frame snap in the story. Makes me think they are confident on their stuff.
Unlike S ome other brand that snaps frames all the times and keep blaming others / making excuses / or most of the time just hiding it.

You usually expect the old pre production excuse
  • 3 2
Everyone knew about it already. No point in tryna cover it up.

It didn't fail from riding stress. No bike is designed to take that sharp of an impact damage.

'I even like bad wine...if that's all there is.' Top of the sport and still such a normal dude. Class.

Thanks for the glimpse into your lives guys. Greg- man, what a year. I have always been a distant appreciator of your skills, but as I age and try to keep up with the young guns, I appreciate your talent even more. Congrats on a great season!! Cheers

anyone else think it was cool they got the wooden pole lol
  • 3 3
glad they too it down, shouldn't have been there in the first place imo
  • 2 1
 @john260164: agree. Hip breaker.
  • 1 0
If not the win, then at least the pole
  • 1 0
@john260164: there are trees all over the place, what difference will a wooden post make? But I get your point, I thought if the post has to be there then it should be designed to fail on impact.
  • 1 0
@Braindrain: yeah that would be a good idea, or at least padded like some of the trees are. Natural hazards are one thing, but unnecessary ones another matter. Anyway, the good thing is Greg wasn't hurt

Well, since Gwin won the Overall, I am pulling for Minaar to win World Champs. That would be good Karma.
  • 19 0
What does karma have to do with this? It's not like Gwin did anything wrong.
  • 20 3
@COnovicerider: Karma is now a popular over-used word. Hence why people who have no f*cking clue what it means trying to use it to look cooler
  • 8 0
@COnovicerider: I don't think he means bad Karma for Gwin, but that Minaar is due good fortunes from the series of presumably undeserved bad fortunes that have recently befallen him. A return to zero, so to say, where Minaar is on the negative side of zero and is due good fortune to balance it all out.

I don't believe in Karma, so I simply hope that neither of them have a mechanical and that everyone makes it down safe. May the best biker that day win.
  • 3 3
@COnovicerider: the real question here is: if they both thanked god for all their wins, and one of them wins world champs, then what? it boggles the mind.
  • 3 3
@JaredHarzan: Thank you Jared for being astute. Minaar is a class act, and it was a shame he went out like that. It was a shame that Gwin had mechanicals too, and so when he came back from behind to win, that was thrilling and HE deserved it. Now I'd like to see Minaar reap the fruits of his labor, and if a little divine intervention or cosmic force gives him an assist, then he deserves it.

@COnovicerider: Karma's been used since probably the 60's, it's not just popular now...
  • 4 1
@COnovicerider: Karma usually applies to the next life in religious traditions, it's true that the word has been very distorted in western conversation.
Gravity and kinetic energy are probably far more relevant to DH racing.
  • 4 1
@Steventux: are you guys all grown men yeah?
  • 1 1
@mollow: no joke. It's entirely played-out and people use it like one should never make a mistake. So dumb.

Peaty pulls the sign post and brings it down the mountain, pure gold.

Judging from Minnaar's instagram post, Marshy is leaving him to go and work at the new Santa Cruz European HQ in Morzine

Sucks for Greg, that flat tire but at the end of the weekend i think he should be happy he didn't snap his lower leg instead of the bike there.
  • 3 0
 Awesome video
  • 2 1
Gutted for Greg, wish he would have gotten a clean run, win or lose. It was an incredible year though!!!
  • 4 3
How are flat tires on WC DH runs still a thing?! Screw developing E-bikes, lets get rid of the flat tire!
  • 1 0
Accept the weight and you eliminate the problem. You also lose the race though. Airless tyres require a whole wheel setup, are prohibitively expensive and can only be set for one pressure/weight or stiffness equivalent. Better to look to a wheel manufacturer than a tyre one. Mavic likes to make proprietary expensive quickly outdated unsupported shit and makes tyres.
  • 6 6
Bad luck again but I recon gwin would still Have won it. Carbon wheels are really starting to look like a bad investment.
  • 12 1
Pretty sure an aluminium rim would have also failed there, but yes it would be cheaper to replace
  • 1 0
Yep and I doubt an alu frame would have survived hitting that post as well but both are way cheaper to replace.
  • 3 0
@thenotoriousmic: it would have bent but probably wouldn´t have snapped
