Words: Specialized

Among the immensity of Chilean Patagonia is Coyhaique, where the Benoit Dominguez family takes refuge. Gabriel Benoit opened the doors of his home for us to host the Specialized Soil Searching Trail Summit in 2022, an event where we were able to dig, ride and talk about the development and conservation of the trails in the area.

Gabo has spent years dedicated to his Patagonia Bikers project, through which he shows the world his beloved refuge. Watch the story of Gabo, his family and his crew, transferring the values of mountain biking to educate about conservation and the lessons that the land has taught him.

bigquotes“For me, living in Patagonia means something super special, because I always wanted it, it was my dream. I searched for it until I found it. I became a fishing guide, and it was my kick to set foot here.

Educating my children in this environment is incredible, for them to grow and develop in a place like this, playing outside, taking care of the important things in life, is priceless. And for us as a family, the bicycle is essential.

Because our connection with nature is our way of enjoying as a family, of having a good time, of visiting those places, and knowing, loving and caring for them. The bicycle is our great point of union”.
Gabriel Benoit, Specialized Soil Searching Ambassador

and, most importantly, a tiny specialized ebike

Yeah bit of a misnomer with "conservation" in the title. I can't help but feel a little mislead when the video highlights a child specific e-bike, and there isn't any discussion about finding the balance between ecological impacts and user experience with developing trail networks in new areas.

@evanlitt: as much as all the riders using their cars to get that amish bike to the trailhead, worry about that.

@norona: The luddites don’t want to hear about how your ebike is easier on the environment than their polluting truck with a Dakine tailgate cover. lol

@norona: well if I could be honest my main quip about this flick is really about the pushing for trail development side of things - ebikes are a pretty great tool if utilized correctly. I just don't think a e-bike for a child is needed.

@evanlitt: every right to think about that for you, but ask yourself this, does your kid use parabolic skis or wood skis, etc for any sport, improvements make things more fun, just do what works for you and your family but the worse thing most parents do is put their beliefs on their young ones when they seldom realize that they only think that way because someone only showed them half of the side.

Yeah, unfortunately this is just a commercial for specialized... I am Chilean and this "Anglo-Saxon" life style don't have nothing to be with the reality of Patagonia or conservation... This life style is just possible making and selling it with the money of your daddy...

Yeahhhh...fortunately not in this case, maybe you see it as a facewashing, but the guys at Patagonia Bikers are real.

I'm completely biased here, (I`m chilean and I've been there twice in the last six months) Gabo is realy doing an amazing work, with the communities and kids from Coyahique. Opening trails in many different places and granting access to private states.

There has been no "daddy" here he has been living there for the las 15 Years as fishing guide and in the lasts years with the bikes. You don't need to attack the guy just because he does what he loves.

'Where the Wild Things Are' Showcases Family & Conservation in Patagonia... Then the Production didn't make a good job, showing it...

If you love conservation and Chile, remember Ebikes need lithium... have a look at the lithium mines in the north of Chile... conservation?

I was watching "Wild life" of Kris Tompkins and Doug Tompkins then I come a cross to this...

 Wealthy greenwashing.

Where are @islandforlife & @Mtbdialed when you need them? These two poor children are being deprived of "struggle, hardship, going without, learning to work hard, being honest, etc." These parents are "nothing but the opposite for all those qualities you should be teaching kids. So at the end of the day, the parents are SELFISH PIECES OF SHIT THAT DESTROYED THEIR CHILDREN FOR THEIR OWN SHORT TERM GAIN."

Calm down, you don't need to be rude to get your point across. @evanlitt expressed their disagreement and position in a much calmer and more articulated way.

At least they got some love..

@Mtbdialed: Of course, you're planted firmly on the left of the Dunning-Kruger chart it would be next to impossible for you to comprehend anything you see in there. But feel free to stay and stare at the wall avoid licking the toilets though.

@ShredDoggg: Those are direct quotes from a prior thread I sarcastically re-used that represent the opinions of said individuals.

Why are children on an ebike? Get them hooked on being lazy young I guess. Maybe give them some cigarettes too just to make sure they don't develop any actual lung capacity.

I would completely change my mind on this if they pulled out a carton of cigs at the end and the whole adventure family started puffin on some darts
