Wait, so a company started selling to someone who would retail their products for less than the LBS' would, and so they are dropped by everyone? That's not how shit works. Contracts, distributors' deals, etc. would make that more or less impossible.
And look at how well it worked for them. There is a certain way things work here. Not necessarily the right way, but that's how she goes. The major distributors control the flow of product here. If they don't like what you are doing, you're f*cked. They were clear with Race Face and told them "if you go behind our backs to MEC, we are dropping you." ......Guess what happened next. Lambert, Norco and OGC (there are others) have a stranglehold on the flow of bike product through Canada. It sucks, but that's how it works here.
In other words, there's a powerful cabal of distributors making damn sure that retail prices for bike gear stay high in Canada (why don't you compare them with the prices south of the border) - and you ridicule RaceFace, rather than those who give you the shaft on the shop floor?
No, I ridicule our distributors waaaaayyyyy more. Race Face is just the flavor of the week. As you can see I take our Canadian distributors VERY seriously. It's cool that you want to stick up for a failed, dead, clown company, but you are barking up the wrong tree dude.
"Business owner got a huge loan from the bank based on fraudulent inventory valuation statements. With the money, he paid himself a ridiculous wage: >$30k/mo. Bank auditors finally figured out what was up and shut the place down. He's facing a civil suit for the loan (over $3MM) as well as likely facing criminal charges."
Easy: 90% of the trendy, knock-off-of-eachother, poorly engineered bike components a lot of kids run. I'll leave brands out of this, for fear of my life being threatened for bringing to light the shittyness of yet another white 3pc cromo crank that no one asked for.....
Mountain Equipment Co-Op. They decided to sell to them and got dropped by all Canadian bike shops and distributors (except for a handfull). They then starved to death for their stupidity.
Race Face started selling their products to MEC. MEC is the enemy of the Canadian Bike industry, so they got pissed. Distributors dropped Race Face and shops followed suit. Race Face went bankrupt within a year apparently. That is the simple explanation.
I don't quite understand why "MEC is the enemy of bike industry".. I just got an excellent bike stand there for a real good price, at least 30% cheaper than my LBS..
No, it's not. MEC is as much a bike shop as any other. Their focus is slightly more limited (no more than the majority of the shops in this city though), and they have an innovative business that lets them sell shit cheap. You gonna tell me every shop should be run by lousy businessmen just to be fair?
What I'm trying to say is...race face been a huge brand MEC should take it care not let it die,I do manager a bike shop and I make it fair for all brands I sell...
Thats only my opinion...
