If you were your own bike maker, what would you be willing to sacrifice to attain elite level performance at your established UHEMB price?

You don't get to "elite" by sacrificing. Just sayin, once you make a sacrifice you're no longer at the elite level.

Prices will need to come down to realistic price for materials used, big manufacturers are too used to making large mark up on top of range bikes, but now cant really make much improvements in performance, other than changing wheel sizes

Canyon is the only Company Ballsy enough to show what is possible if one really put's the hammer down. www.canyon.com/en/mountainbikes/bike.html?b=3573

Besides that looking at real cost versus some profit for the reseller a kickass full sup bike is easily producible for around 1100 dollars

Anyone else think carbon frames cost so much to cover all the warranty returns...? most people I speak to with carbon frames have a warranty story to tell

I've never owned a carbon bike but hear that in here a lot and honestly don't understand why. I would love to read an article detailing why this is occurring as I would like better understand my carbon frame purchase in the future and the risks. I'm still rocking an AL frame from 2004 and a ht from 2005 with zero issues. From what I understand about carbon this should be occurring less than with AL frames outside of direct strikes to the frame. Anyone care to educate me?...PB?

Cheap Taiwanese manufacturing plants are typically to blame for issues with carbon. Bike companies want to produce bikes cheaply so they can charge less while still retaining their margins. Unfortunately outsourcing has lead to the overall decrease in quality because most smaller companies can not afford their own carbon production facilities. Brands like Santa Cruz have been renowned for their carbon fiber quality because they have a great deal of control over their manufacturing. This is a situation where you can actually benefit from buying products from the bigger manufacturers because in most cases they either own their own production facilities over seas, or have a very close hand in the production process with the company they use for manufacturing.

What the hell is a "universal high end mountain bike?" The only thing universal on mountain bikes at any price point is that universal or standardized doesn't really exist.

The bike industry will rebuke the notion they make big margins on high end bikes. there is however no justification for simple cable operated machine like a bicycle to cost as much or more as the equivalent performance level motorcycle.

I know someone is going to mention production volume but come on, when you consider how much more tech is in a motorcycle the bike industry excuses just don't make sense.

would be interesting to hear what people consider to be the best bang-for-your-buck components for a bike, then to see how much they would possibly cost as a package. Obviously, it's not so simple, with deals being cut for volume, exclusivity, etc. but interesting nonetheless

I would cut out the middlemen so I could supply great bikes at great prices. Unfortunately, Canyon, YT etc beat me to it!
