The Yeti Cycles Big Mountain Enduro Series presented by Maxxis featured 8 stages of racing over two days at Big Sky Resort in Montana with two stages being raced for the first time ever. Impressively, racers took on five transitions for 5,159 feet of climbing with the remaining three transitions being lift served. Clear skies and pleasant temps kept the weather near perfect for racing with a shower on the first day of practice to tighten up the tracks.

After I finished the race I grabbed my DH bike for some chair laps but first went near the top of Stage 8 to watch the last of the pros come down - I was at the end of a long straight away that came into a very loose rocky/dusty right hander into a 3 foot chute into another right hander where the trail went into the woods.

I watched several pros come down and it was fairly exciting but nothing crazy.

Then I saw Richie dropping in at the top. Other than reading Pinkbike I don't follow the sport that closely but he is by far my favorite EWS racer, so I was excited -

He comes mach-ing into that right hand turn and started sliding out hard coming straight at my position I thought he was going to crash for sure (I mean, we might have different ideas of what "out of control" means but he definitely lost it) - rocks and dust are flying, and he drops his inside leg out and slides though the corner all the way to 180 degrees, hits the top little bump on the outside of the chute and literally flies down the 3 foot chute sideways with his inside leg hanging out, lands in the 2nd corner already pointing the right way and completely recovers without slowing down.

I was the only person anywhere near this spot on the course and no one else saw it !
Absolutely incredible moment !

Once in a lifetime experience, man. Very cool!

So cool! thanks for the recap!

Anybody notice that tread change on Richie's front tire in last picture? DHF to DHR II?
  • 4 1
Eagle eye. Looks like what you said.
  • 2 1
 whoa...I see it.
  • 2 1
Race was over two days so maybe used a DHR II up front on the day with steeper tracks for better braking?
  • 40 3
 You need a GF.
  • 5 1
@b1k35c13nt15t: Haha yep! Except my vision is pretty good so I am not going blind?? I originally had looked at it because the tread pattern looked like a DHR II but side knobs looked more like an Assegai/High Roller and I was curious if it was a prototype.
  • 1 1
@nicktapias: Eagle Eye for sure… But that‘s it. L-Shape side knobs are missing. Kind of DHR II in center and Assegai on the side mix. Interesting!
  • 2 1
@nicktapias: Possibly just a normal DHR2 with the L knobs trimmed to widen the channel?
  • 1 1
@Sebov: OMG, which means that PB posted a spy shot! Again!
  • 2 0
@lkubica: Definitely a unique tire, saw his bike in the pits and it was stamped test pilot. Something in the works.
  • 14 5
From the race report you would think there were only 10 racers for the whole thing! No love for the locals or anybody outside the top 5?

Why is PB covering this but not mention of Canadian Nationals?

Thought you were a Canadian company? Has Outside already ruined it?

At this pace I'll be forgetting about PB altogether.

Big Mountain Enduro covered it, Not PB. PB just posted it.

Why is Cody Kelley not wearing the usa sleeve as the current national champion ?

Richie's grips seems an ODI Elite with Ergon plugs. I also notice this setup on Troy Brosnan's bike on Les Gets WC. Also, before anyone says it's a GFR1, try to look at the clamps. The clamps are thinner and the bolts come in silver, unlike GFR1 that use black bolts.
  • 1 3
Smaller side knobs look more like Dissector or HR2. Hard to imagine Richie would swap in those tires for a DHF front though: they’re a significant downgrade in braking & cornering bite for very little rolling speed increase.
  • 3 1
 Steep and deep!
  • 5 4
Richie apparently wakes up in the morning and pisses excellence
  • 6 6

@weebleswobbles: he was roofied and you know it
