@ShawMac: If you are avoiding pedal strikes and like to spin that makes sense!… I think that many of the tests that have shown short don’t loose power take place on a trainer where you aren’t throwing the bike side to side ect. I usually ride where a single pedal stroke or half is all you get between obstacles regardless of crank length. Quick engagement hubs also matter more in this setting-

@dick-pound: Shorter cranks dramatically reduced your power in real life mtb situations. I’ve tried clear down to 165 and I felt neutered when any real standing effort was necessary. It seems to me that the people who think it doesn’t matter don’t attack out of the saddle or sit and spin on climbs. If they did they would notice the downside of short cranks-
