@trillot: It does sound strange, but the design considerations are less extreme than we typically think. The aluminum is only flexing a small amount, in its elastic range, under relatively low stress.
The whole flexstay is considerably long and may deflect up to couple of millimeters, but well within the allowable range.It's not flexing by centimeters, which yes, would be permanent and eventually fatigue and snap.
