Dan Barham Photography - Prints!

Nov 8, 2010 at 13:50
by Tyler Maine
Lower prices, easier shopping and an exclusive Pinkbike discount in a newly launched online shop.

I wanted to drop everyone a line to let you all know that I've just relaunched my online shop with a host of new features in which I'm hoping you'll be stoked about. I took a look around at how other people were doing prints, and I simply didn't like a few things, but most of all I didn't like the high prices - mountain biking isn't exclusively a rich man's sport, so why should the art that supports it be?

Looking for more affordable prints?
photo

With that in mind, I set out to do things a little differently. I redesigned my shop to offer the same hand-produced, high-quality, limited edition prints as before, but by only offering one size by default, setting up new deals with suppliers and streamlining the postage I'm able to significantly reduce the cost. A print that previously cost $139 CAD plus shipping, I'm now able to sell for just $100 CAD (additional 20% off with a PINKBIKE code until Nov 21st, so just $80!), including shipping within North America! Add into that an easy to use shopping cart system and secure online payment, and I'm hoping more people will be able to have a piece of real mountain biking art hanging on their wall. shop.danbarham.com

You can visit the online shop here - shop.danbarham.com

As an added bonus to celebrate the launch, until November 21st I'm giving readers of Pinkbike 20% off their order - simply use the code "PINKBIKE" in the cart checkout screen.

Thanks, and happy trails!
Dan

wait your kidding right? $100 cad for a print and you state its a cheap price. everyone needs to step back and look at OUR economy at the moment, whether or not $100 is cheap for print is not what im getting at... what im getting at is. is $100 cheap for A print in our current market situation? anyone who studies our markets and knows what consumers are doing well know that this price is not cheap.. sorry man. all in all great work though

You make no sense. You said "weather (it's whether btw) or not $100 is cheap for a print is not what im getting at" then you say, "this price is not cheap". It sounds to me that the price is exactly what you are complaining about. You also said "anyone who studies are (our) markets and knows what consumers are doing well know that this price is not cheap". You literally just said that economists know that his prices are too high. Or maybe you are implying that his consumers are struggling financially. That is a rather broad statement to make. I know bikers who are lawyers and some who still live with their parents. If you think his prices are too high, just say that. Don't pretend to be a financial analyst.

It's alot of money, but it's not expensive for a product of art. It's a matter of priority. Great photos!
  • 9 1
I think people are becoming too used to the devalued market of our sports photography...Many new/amatuer photographers are out and about, selling images (in the uk) for as little as £3 each...it's no doubt similar over in america etc also...These low prices devalue the mtb photography industry (to an extent) and leads people to expect most images should be around this value and no more...
  • 7 2
$100 is not expensive for a fine art print. Giant-Rider-Sam is completely right about devalued images, and it hurts the professional photographers. But in the end, you get what you pay for. If you can't tell the difference between a $3 print and a $100 print, then you're probably better off buying the $3 anyway.
  • 4 0
lmao! i-eat-dirt gives out the e-SLAAPPP! photography will always endure the short end of the stick in the fine arts world due to it's "capturing" of the image as opposed to the creation of the image or object-as seen in drawing painting and sculpture. photo is no less credible, but it will always carry this weight. and as smike says, "If you can't tell the difference between a $3 print and a $100 print, then you're probably better off buying the $3 anyway." that was funny too.

Also as noted they are $80 right now with free shipping. Is it affordable now? Or has the recession forced your parents to seriously cut down on your allowance?

 Matt-W: now try printing it.
  • 2 0
@i-eat-dirt, I know you are trying to look smart by pointing out NMarvik's spelling mistakes, but you missed one
  • 2 0
and how big and how good do you think the quality of the print will be?
  • 8 0
Why is everyone bitching about the price? The photos are worth whatever someone will pay for them. Take a step sideways and view the price of your bike(s)/components from a non riders perspective.
  • 2 2
non-riders won't be buying mountain biking prints. regardless, they're only 80.00 until Nov 21 if everyone read the article.
  • 1 0
hes saying how much our bikes appear to be a waste of money to non bikers yet we still spend the money because we love the sport, same thing for the prints. For those who dont appreciate art, 100$ is a steep price but those who enjoy art are more willing to pay the price for it.
  • 7 2
Maybe in the us your market sucks still, but in Canada it is getting alot better from what I can see. Also the time and skill it takes to take photos of that level are off the hook. $100 bucks is nothing for art man and these are great art. Keep up the sick photos and happy shooting.
  • 5 0
Not trying to be a financial analyst here either, but to me $100 is steep... especially because I don't know anyone in those shots or the photographer.

I bought 6 shots of myself riding the mega this year (plus digital copies) for not much more than that. Could have bought the same number of 'pro rider' shots for the same price too.

Fair enough these are much more artistic though.
Won't spend my hard earned on them though Wink
  • 2 1
Event photography and fine art photography are in two completely different classes, and are priced accordingly. At least you recognize that these are "much more artistic" - that is what accounts for the extra cost.
  • 1 0
So as long as your not taking photos of an event its fine art photography? Anyone can take a digital picture and play with it in an Adobe suite.
  • 1 0
"Event photography" is a genre of photography, just like landscape photography, portrait photography, street photography etc. That is not to say that a photo taken at an event can't be considered fine art. Event photography is usually intended to capture the participants of a particular event, like a sporting event, party etc. You can insult photographers all you want by saying that "anyone can take a digital picture and play with it in an Adobe suite", but everyone knows that that doesn't make you a photographer.

A guy from Canada printed a very good quality picture and pretty large. He sent that for me in France for less than $50. That's what I'd call cheap.
  • 3 0
Another typical pinkbike argument... every time i look at this site there are always people bickering about trivial things. It makes it a very unenjoyable place. if you dont wana pay $80 for a print... dont, there is no need to tell the world about it. quality prints come at a price.
  • 2 0
Easy on guys. I like them, my least favorite being the first. Not to discredit skill involved from both the riders or the photographer, I loved that movie btw. Whether you'd pay for them or not, keep it to yourself, don't argue the fact. Dicks
  • 2 0
I had a quick look at your site, and I must say you have some great photos.
But I couldn't see pink bikers buying them, why? Personally for that price I / others would rather see myself / themselves in the picture then some dude.
I think you would be better off aiming at the bike companies, I think you would have more luck there.
What I'm trying to say is.. Your style looks very advertisment and that's where I think you would get more offers.

Keep up the good work and best of luck with it all.

they are nice shots, but $100 is too much for A3 printout. I will consider this prize for A1+

flag Magz (Nov 11, 2010 at 11:01) (Below Threshold)
If that is to much you don't deserve one.
  • 5 1
so you're getting at him because you're a rich twat and he might not be as well off as you? your comment is possibly the biggest piece of shit i have ever seen here on pinkbike (sorry lads, i thought this necessitated swearing...)
  • 2 2
I think you missed the point. Its about how much the print is worth, its not what I or anyone else can afford to to pay for it. Good art is invaluable, it's whatever the buyer is willing to pay for it and if anyone is not willing pay $100 bucks for a good print jog on. Surely you would ask a lot in return for it if it was your art being sold and it meant a lot to you. Dan Barham is great a photographer and his prices are lower than they should be. I would value his prints much higher but i can't afford them at the price they are now.
  • 3 0
Mr. Magz. it is not necessary to be offensive. and it looks like you are bit "lost in translation." I even didnt say i will not buy it (i'm considering size and prize). in opposite: your last sentence doesn't make sense at all Smile
Anyway... To call something "ART" is very subjective. For example i can call art photos like those also: www.pinkbike.com/news/Jaws-UK-trip-video-2010.html some of them are really good one. In final it is up to you or me: the question - buy the photo(s) or not. There is nothing about "deserve". Just take it easy Smile
  • 1 0
Magz, who are you to decide who is deserving of anything? You are an extremely arrogant person.
  • 3 0
whatever to the haters. if you dont like what you see or the price move on. 'nuff said. no one person gets to decide what is or what isnt art.....
  • 5 0
i would buy some if i had any money left over from bike parts Razz
  • 9 4
$100???????? I think ill go and buy a poster instead for $10
  • 10 2
Anyone who compares a poster to a fine art print is obviously in the market for a poster.
  • 1 0
Yeah, 'fine art prints' are posters with better marketing.
  • 2 1
Again, a bit short-sighted. Why is digital photography any less viable than film photography? It's just the medium. Many fine art photographers shoot digital these days.
  • 2 1
So, you edit your post so mine doesn't make sense. Art is subjective of course. You obviously don't consider these art, so know one is forcing you to buy one. Go buy a poster and be happy with it. But no need to discredit the artist.
  • 2 1
And yes, some fine art pieces are made into posters. But having a poster of a Monet doesn't mean you have a Monet.
  • 2 1
I think Dan is an artist. He uses the light and lens to express himself. His work has a vallue. Art is for those who can afford that value. It's not about cheap or not because (as we can see here in the comments) everyone has a different opinion. It is about perspectives.

If you want and can... then buy. If not, then make your own art.

Cheers,
Beer

I have always wanted a copy of the Wet Dog, but never got around to it until about 30 minutes ago. Christmas is coming and why not buy myself something? So I did and I am looking forward to getting it framed (which will likely cost most then the print) and put it on a wall where I live.

 cool... tup

when I was getting ready to open the shop, I had intended to fill the empty wall space with large bike-related prints (aka large photos -- more than let's say 3'x4'ish). These would be mounted and all, not just silly biker posters taped to the wall. I shopped around a lot and man, it was pricey!!! we're talking like $250, $300 and more for large prints (mounted).

that was just too much money to spend on something that wasn't technically going to make money so l ended up buying several "bike" posted, had those mounted instead - that wasn't cheap either but it was a fraction of the cost compared to having someone wup up nice local photos.

some of the smaller versions I had made up, I just did through Costco (local/national) company here in the US. rates were pretty good and photos turned out real nice.

This is my favourite pinkbike comment thread. Didn't expect to come on while eating my breakfast and read a discussion about what constitues art and its subjective value. Getting deep pinkbike, RADGRAR!
  • 1 0
Damn I'd love to support you but I'm 100% broke Frown
and when I do get the money I'll have to spend it on my bike which is a complete piece of shit .... BUT when I'll have 100$ lying around I'll buy one ^^
  • 3 2
I would never pay $100 for a print. You have amazing talent, and take mind blowing shots. But $100 for a shot is insane in these times...
  • 2 2
$100 for a print is hardly "insane". It's not for everyone, I understand. If you're in the market to buy art, $100 is very cheap. If you want to buy a poster, then it's expensive. Same way that people who buy $100 department store bikes think $2000 is "insane"... those of us who appreciate bikes, don't.
  • 2 1
$100 is cheap for a high quality print you cheapskate. If you can't afford it that doesn't mean its expensive. Check out blakejorgenson.com one of the action sports photographers there is. His prints are far more expensive but there worth it. I can't afford one but I certainly wont complain about the price,
  • 1 2
I totally love the images.great to hear you could reduce costs. do you develop those by yourself or do u just print them(digital photos)? if u develop & print them yourself and they would be a bit bigger than 17" by 11" i would consider them as fine pieces of art and could understand why some people wouldn't hesitate to buy one. if not, it's not worth it's salt.personal opinion, though.
  • 2 1
How can he develop his own digital photos? Assuming by developing you mean through chemicals in a darkroom? In which case thats impossible, I'm sure he digitally EDITS them himself and gets them printed through a company but that dosen't mean it's worth anything less. The difference between a decent digital print and a crap one is massive. Print quality, paper type, color rendition etc all plays a part in ensuring the quality of the print is the same as you see on screen. Everyone wants something for nothing these days, no one takes into consider thousands of pounds ($) that goes into equipment, qualifications, experience, knowledge and just being damm good at your job.
  • 2 3
 Fine art?
im sure im missing the point but art is something you create surely? Paintings, sculpture that sort of thing?
Unless the photographer built the jumps etc, hired the riders/ their kit, grew the trees in the back and arranged some decent weather with a higher power then im not sure if he created a shot, rather just pointed a kick ass camera at something and pushed the button.
granted it looks good but im not sure i'd call it art
  • 2 0
Art is subject to the person looking at it. Art is not just something you create. However a photograph or print can create memories and instill happiness from memories. The photographer has to frame an image still. If he had half a body out of the shot, it wouldn't be as good would it? He still has a "blank" canvas to work with and only has a limited amount of "space" on it. It takes GREAT skill to take a decent photo. He probably spent over 20-30 mins placing flashes and focusing on the part that HE thought was important in the shot, may not be the rider in some cases. It's like saying Jackson Pollock isn't "fine art" because all he did was throw paint at a canvas. But he still created something.

 So... photography isn't considered art?
  • 1 0
just sayin....mountain biking is EXTREMELY expensive compared to like skating or any other action sport besides dirtbiking...
  • 1 0
This is art, printing art takes time + money. Printing posters does not.
