Red Bull Rider Brandon Semenuk takes 60 SGC Campers Under His Wing.

At just seventeen, Brandon gives life lessons to aspiring athletes. Sixty stoked riders from the Summer Gravity Camps gathered for dinner at the Whistler Brew Pub. Local hero and freeride mountain bike prodigy, Brandon Semenuk was on hand to discuss his career and latest accomplishments. Brandon has made his name by winning prestigious contests like Red Bull Rampage and Crankworx Colorado. Whistler native Semenuk expressed his enthusiasm with his involvement with the camp and his experience in sharing his knowledge with the campers. Brandon explained “it was awesome to coach Summer Gravity Camps this year. Mountain biking is progressing a lot right now, and this is a big turning point. Each week these kids are showing huge progression. As much as coaching might seem like a job, it’s really not hard to ride with a bunch of rad kids that want to ride as much as you.”

LOL Brandon and enthusiasm in the same sentence? He's one of the most unenthusiastic kids I've met. I swear a dog could explode right in front of him and he'd just be all "oh... cool... I guess..."

Nice to see young kids getting into riding though.

he is acutally one of the most out-going and nicest guys ive ever met, he just takes a while to warm up to.

in psychology we talked about how extreme ass people like brandon actually have a very mellow attitude towards everything. They literally have a gene in them which keeps them slightly more mellow, so they need to go huge and crazy to get their adrenaline pumping.

 Makes sense I guess.

im pretty mad.. i got cut outa the middle picture... but yeah, brandon was hella chill.. he was quite and kinda shy in the begginning but around mid week, he was joking around and was pretty enthusiastic haha

I wonder how many kids were older than brandon....
  • 9 0
 ...or taller
  • 2 0
lol, 1 was older and there was like 3 maybe 4 who were the same age

i couldn't take life lessons from a 17 year old. does he even know what life is other then riding a bike yet?
  • 1 1
probably not.. and it doesn't matter whether he has or hasn't
  • 2 5
lol, I don't think I could take a 17 year old coaching me seriously. Hes just a teenager, regardless of how he rides a bike. Some of us have been on bikes longer than he has been alive.
  • 2 1
I'd take some coaching and bike related bike info from his as i suck at riding a bike compared to him. but Life advice? please ppl who were there, get any very interesting life advice from him? one who hasn't had a family of his own, a full time job, bills mortgages, deaths, celebrations, ups, downs. The things someone with life experience has seen handled, etc. The kid is 17 years old, how much does he know about life?

when you're put in Brandon's shoes, you'd quickly realize a life like that makes a kid grow up fast and become wiser upon your years. he's had that natural push that comes with being a top athlete in this industry. There's a lot more than just riding that he has to deal with, such as co-workers, managers, companies; and also trying to live a normal kid life which is sort of hard when you have these other dedications to deal with. Its not as easy as it seems.

honestly I think you guys are taking this a little to literally. I was there and he didnt give us "epic life lessons" that blew my mind, or teach us how to manage money better and raise kids, but he did give us an input on what it takes to ride at that level and general things like how he overcomes his fears, if hes ever scared doing big jumps e.t.c Basically it just gave us kids a chance to talk to him and see how a professional rider thinks and goes about progressing to the next level. It wasnt life lessons on specific things like mortgages, houses, kids and families, but rather lessons on hard work, focus, determination and practice which he obviously knows about considering how good of a rider he is.

I would really love to go to one of those camps..... but 3K for a week? JEEEEZ, thats expencive.
  • 1 0
Its well worth it. I went last year and I am going again this year.
  • 1 0
 it definetly is... tis amazing

 Someone is spoiled....Lol
  • 1 0
nope.. i paid for part of it, part of my birthday present(which i spent my birthday there), and a x-mas present
  • 1 0
 I'm paying for it buddy...

lol 3k on a camp? Go buy a yeti 303 frame or something. 3k for a camp is uhhh... absolutely retarded in every which way. Woodward used to be expensive back in the 90's and it wasn't more than 1500 or so bucks including travel and lodging. Seems to me whistler is just ripping people off. Absolutely no reason to have it cost that much. None.

and for the kids paying for it themselves, wisen the hell up. Save up and get a place to live when your old enough. Funny how spending 3k on a camp might seem worth it when your 17 but come on... I had my own place when I was 17... Priorities and pussy. Period. Camp won't get you laid Big Grin

Its well worth the money. The amount of knowledge and the amount of skill i gained from the 1 week there was huge.

I'll be going back for my second year next year along with a new bike. It was fun to go and do during the summer. I have to admit its a bit pricey but all 100% worth the experience.
  • 1 0
Agreed rffr, i would never want to spend that much for a weeks worth of fun. (even tho i still want to go, ahhaha)
Just a thought... but you could buy or rent a bobcat for that price and build yourself a dirt jump park or trails.
Saving the money for something later in life is even better.

that is true but, for some of us (myself included) who live in Ontario we dont have many mountains to ride and such. Now im not one to complain (and im not complaining i make do with what i have and build my own spots) but this was just a nice way for me to go and get to experience whistler with pros that I have looked at in magazines and watched in videos. I wasnt able to get my parents to go so this gave me the freedom to go alone, ( i had a place to sleep e.t.c). It may seem stupid to save up and spend this much money on a camp, i get that. But honestly it was a great experience.

Think about it, a trip to whistler for a week won't even hit 1500 bucks even staying at a nice hotel. The money just doesn't add up. Absolutely no reason what so ever it costs this much. None. nada. zip.

lol have you ever gone to whistler!?!?!?!

I went to the same place 2 years ago and stayed and it was 100 per night. so theres 700 alone for the room GST, PST ans HRT. then you need to pay lift tickets which is another 252 plus you pay PST and GST on that. The shuttle from the airport and back is around 250 + gst/pst (price from greyhound) Then Lunch and breakfast every day so there is 175 + gst/pst. and another 175 for the admission for the air dome plus PST and GST. Thats $1808.24 w/tax before the camp is paid for.

I wasn't there and I'm older than him, but I would take riding advice from him. When it comes down to it, we are all bike rider's regardless of what age and he's a damn good one!

ahahhah there is erik in the last picture with the goofy smile, he was my room mate. i cant find myself in the photos, but Brandon was awesome, really nice guy.

  • 1 0
Just because a kid got the chance to go to SGC, doesn't mean they are rich, I know for a fact some kids work their ass off to get the money to go, some get it as a gift on Christmas, and some other little things, and nothing else, Think aboutwhat you say and what other people say before you type the Shit coming out of your mouth and click "Submit".
