Series Recap: MEC Canadian National Enduro Series presented by Intense Cycles

2018 was an unprecedented year for Enduro racing in Canada, this year saw the largest Canadian representation at EWS events, a massive increase in enduro events across Canada, an up-tick in race participation, more women riders across all categories, and the closest competition to date!

A few of my highlights from this years season are:
- Our CNES Development Team supported by Blueprint, absolutely lighting the podiums up across Canada and the USA.
- More women: our women's categories are growing, and the U21 category is quickly rivalling the pro's!
- Amazing support from the local communities. Volunteers, food vendors and trail clubs, we salute you!
- New racers > we had more than 437 new registrations this year! That's huge! The majority of these were in our 30-39 category and our U21 categories.
- Trail love - we donated more than $10,000 back to local trails this year, I say WE, because that's you (the racer). Whenever you register for an event, I allocate 10% of your entry straight to the local trail club, but it get's better, MEC then matches our donation, and together, we're able to provide a little bit of love for the club!
- Championship > This was the first year we ran a one-day national championship event, my favourite event of the year. Super excited to bring this back to Panorama, and test the limits of what you all are willing to go through!
- Volunteers > with more than 1440 volunteer hours this year, our vollies earn a huge thanks, their selflessness and dedication to ensuring that you all have fun is what reminds me that no matter what, we're riding bikes and having fun!

There are a few people that I need to give special thanks to: Keri Lewis, Kaitlin Lomas, Sue Helly, Michelle Davies, Connor Hamilton, Peter Wojnar, James Cattanach, Sam Egan, Alvaro Leal, Jacob Tooke, Jay Balabas, Jose Letelier, Ryan Cronsberry, Dimitri Kuzmin, Dustin Adams, Jason Moore and Cadence Thadawg.

Lastly, I wanted to give a shout-out to MEC our title partner. Likely at some-point this year, you had your bike serviced by the crew at MEC, this team goes out of their way to help get every rider back in the event, from taking apart other bikes, to staying late to troubleshoot a fork, there support has been irreplaceable. Some other incredible things they do are support the efforts of local trail clubs through our matched donation program, but also through their Community Grant programs they help build capacity, education and relationships across every province. Lots of events have sponsors, I truly see MEC as a partner, we work together to not only bring better events to you, but to also develop athletes, trails and provide support for some truly unique experiences.

This year was a very competitive year for the overall, with a surprising few twists, so check below for the top three in each category!

Daniel Shaw is your 2018 Canadian National Enduro Series overall champion, he's followed up by Lee Jackson and Max Leyen. Daniel Shaw had this to say about what being the overall title holder is all about "Enduro racing is damn fun! It's crazy how much you get to ride in a day while letting off the brakes and going fast. I'll be back next year for sure."

2019 CANADIAN NATIONAL ENDURO CHAMPIONSHIP™

Some interesting news for 2019! We'll be running another one-day championship, in 2019 the Canadian National Enduro Championship™ will be the first UCI sanctioned enduro in Canada, in conjunction with Cycling Canada. The event will take place at Panorama Mountain Resort.

The only sanctioned categories will be the Pro Men (Elite Men) and Pro Women (Elite Women), those will be the only categories requiring UCI licenses to compete. All other categories will be unaffected by the sanctioning.

Furthermore, the 2019 Canadian National Enduro Championship™, will be held alongside the Downhill MTB Championship, on the same weekend. The CNEC event will take place on Saturday, July 27th, with practice on Friday, July 26th. The DH Race will take place on the 28th, with practice and seeding on the 26th and 27th. This will create a full gravity oriented championship weekend, so be sure to bring some spare tires!

Great update Ted. You offer a lot of (deserving) praise to the supporting cast of this series but you need to pat yourself on the back for bringing the best race format across Canada with a fun and competitive feel. Kudos to you!

Great Job Daniel! You killed it all season and made us proud!

I don't know about combining the Enduro and DH national championships on the same weekend. Love to race both...challenging enough to practice/race one event in a weekend. Why force us to choose one?
  • 3 1
Did you race both this year? The option is there to race both events. Back in the day we used to race xc on Saturday, dual slalom sat night and dh on Sunday.

Not stoked about both Enduro and DH Nationals being on the same weekend. As someone who wants to be competitive in the Pro Category in both events, it will really be difficult, if not impossible to achieve a good result in the DH if I race the Enduro too.

Think about it, Enduro practice, even with chairlifts will take most, if not all day. You might be able to sneak in a couple DH Laps mid day on Friday and pre-ride the Enduro stages outside the bike park after the lift closes, but then you're switching between bikes and equipment. If the Enduro race is as long as last year, there will be no way to do any practice and more importantly, seeding for DH before the lifts close on Saturday.

This is nationals, arguably the most important race for a privateer who wants to qualify for Mont Saint Anne or get EWS Qualifier points. Why make rider chose one discipline?

@leattphil - Hey Phil; don't worry, the schedule will allow lots of time for both, the lift will run late on Friday and Saturday, so that participants have ample time to do practice and the race. You can for sure expect an early start to the Enduro on Saturday and a late start for the DH on Sunday.

We didn't see a huge cross-over between disciplines this year or last. There's lots of behind the scenes, and bringing the event into one weekend festival will really promote both sports.

No need to choose a discipline. Just be organized, train hard and come prepared and you'll do well in both events.

Think about Crankworx, multi-disciplined games over the course of two weeks. If Sam Hill can win Garbo and get second in the Enduro, surely you can give this a try!?

Props to anyone that survived in +42* at Fortune this summer!

I didn't survive - retired after stage one haha

Great job. Just hoping that the CNES can be spread out rather than all west, then all east. I know that works for event coordination and your travel time. But for kids in the west, they are essentially done racing in June. If hurt or away, they miss the whole season by missing a month. Same with kids in the east waiting until August. And the optional BC Enduro Series races were still June with the exception of Canmore, which is a great spot but the blue square focus made long drive times less appealing when great terrain was available (see 2016 Canmore course). Just some thoughts. It would be fun to race events all summer for those that can't afford cross country travel.

And props for pushing Panorama out to end of July! That helps!

Hey Dale; there are a ton of local/amateur events across BC (actually 33 events from May long to September long). There is soo much to consider when organizing a national series, but will keep this in mind moving forward.

Cheers,

Had an awesome time in Kamloops. I'm really hoping that my schedule will allow me to hit a few more stops next year.

Good Job Daniel, you made that Fugitive fly!

Great year Ted . Cant wait till next season

Overall results just show who entered the most races lol.

@tots34 - Hey Taylor, that's not entirely the case, but like any sport, dedication, commitment and the ability to maintain consistent results are typically what get you the overall in any sport. Hope to see you back in 2019 with some solid results!
