Oh and the alloy oozy is only about £70
£600 carbon wheelsets could easily be the norm now. (and that's leaving room for a profit margin!)
.
Ironically the company that used to sell low cost, good quality carbon wheels gave up on it since they couldn't make any money on them. If Superstar couldn't sell enough £450 carbon wheelsets to make it worthwhile everyone else is knackered, even Light Bicycle can't do you a wheelset for less than £550 before shipping and taxes. Welcome to Brexit Britain and buy a set of these wheels before they go up in price!
Brexit or not global sourcing and manufacturer direct sales are already happening.
I could get someone premium branded hubs, top end bladed spokes and next generation carbon rims for sub £500 easy.
Drop the premium hubs n spokes and I could sort decent wheelsets for sub £300.
the only issue is with racing where you might lunch a rim and won't be able to get warranty in time - I suppose keep a cheap alloy rim spare will sort that though.
Even if it was a slightly reduced cost which i doubt, workshop fees are workshop fees at the end of the day and you've still got the hassle and or cost of sending it off and being without a wheel. If i was light enough or my trails were all flowy i'd most probably think about it...
I haven't however destroyed the DT F570 that is now mounted on the rear that has been smashing through as many outer shape lines I can find in the lake district. It might be a little bent and flat in places but its still rolls and does its job nicely, something that can't be said for carbon.
It weighs about a 100g's more, which I feel a lot less than the cringing feeling i had when running carbon rims and tackling rock gardens. I don't believe many people don't experience that cringing feeling when riding such expensive wheels and getting out of shape. Personally I like not caring about my wheels and riding what lines I think is fastest not the smoothest.
For me the trial of carbon rims was and expense and a hassle I wish i didn't experience.
I'm with you on the carbon rim thing tho, I defo ride faster and with more confidence now I haven't got carbon rims.
I'm sure for some they are a viable option but for the time being they aren't for me!
then you have : a light wheel
a strong wheel
and a wheel that looks like trendy carbon
