@m0dest: Even in aerospace or car manufacturing, the cost of a finished part in steel is $2 a pound. Alloy is $4, and carbon is $12.50. The price is still higher due to hand finishing. Advances are being made in automation (Volvo leaf springs, BMW roof pillars) but it will take time for that technology to trickle down- but that sort of automation is the future of carbon manufacturing.

Opinion: Shiny Objects Aren't The Answer
I built my dream bike 2 years ago, and still have it. Yeti ASR-5 alloy in turquoise. Mostly XTR, hope brakes, hadley hubs to whatever rims i haven't smashed yet. it was a dream bike- and its worth as much as my car. My friends constantly talk about their next big upgrade- i can't think of one part I would want to upgrade. The bike doesn't hold me back- it just wants to be ridden.

Yeti 575 - Review
Fox float air spacer tuning kit. Full kit is about $60, but you really just need the LV or HV shock kit that matches your shock. Evidently all the yeti guys run the smallest spacer, which let's you run 5-10 psi or so less to eat up the small bumps and makes the shock more progressive so you don't bottom out. Since I tossed in the spacer, I finally found the balance between small bump compliance and not bottoming out on bigger rocks (I live in central Texas, not a lot of drops bigger than 2-3 feet). Totally transformed the bike to the way I wanted it to feel

Yeti 575 - Review
Been riding a asr5 for a while now and the single pivot suspension is far from dead. It has it's benefits- low maintenance, fewer bearings to create slop, lighter weight. I run sag between 25 and 30%, and have a volume reducer in my rear shock. I'd seriously consider this as a replacement to my asr5 when it dies. In my opinion, this bike NEEDS the volume reducer in the shock to come alive. Mine never felt right until I added it. The SB frames in alloy weigh 7+ lbs, this frame weighs in at six. My asr5 weighed in at 5.3 lbs, and is very stiff front to back when I hit rocky areas. Six pounds sounds like a lot, but my frame has a traditional headset, carbon rear end. My bike with flows and xtr 1x setup weigh in at 26 lbs. you can keep your $10k carbon wonder bike, I will keep my alloy bike that's "outdated".

There is the relationship of top tube to wheelbase to consider. that extra half inch of top tube coupled with a slack front end means bikes are getting LONG. This isn't bad if your trails are flowy, but here in central texas, where its very rocky with lots of short steep ups, means that it can be a pain to maneuver at low speeds thru certain sections. I personally ride a large yeti, and its as long as my bike rack gets (saris cycle-on pro). Its probably less of an issue with bikes that aren't large or xl, but my top tube is already near 25". I run a 60mm stem. And short rear ends have their limits- any shorter than the 16.9 my bike has and I feel like I'd wheelie on the steep ups. I actually had to bump down to a 32t ring to keep traction on the rear end (was running a 36t).

Santa Cruz 5010c - Review
My usual ride is a yeti asr-5, really a direct competitor of the old blur TRc. The new SB75 would be a good comparison to this bike. I have noticed that on wide open trails, I much prefer the longer top tube of the yetis (mine is 24.8", a comparable santa cruz would be about 24"). In the tight, choppy single track where turns are king- I really have to plan where I'm putting the bike. On a shorter wheelbased bike- its more natural. I have a fox 32 on my bike, recently lowered to 130. The only real fork that would fit at 130 with 34mm stanchions would be the x-fusion sweep. For 2014, the fox 34 and pike can only be lowered to 150. If they could be lowered to 130, i'd have a pike right now (or a BOS Deville).

They saved the weight by using less resin. the total amount of carbon used is the same. resin is the weak part- the less you can use (with total saturation) the stronger the final product will be, while saving weight.
