Kona Announces 2014 Team Roster

by Kona Bikes
Long known as one of the cycling industry's most interesting, eclectic and diverse collections of international athletes, the Kona Team returns in 2014 more focused, while introducing a new member in Andrew Crimmins, one of the fastest junior DH racers on the planet. Building on their myriad successes last season, this year's team sees a total of 10 athletes across five disciplines (XC, CX, DH, Enduro, Big Mountain/Slopestyle) and five nationalities (UK, France, Canada, Australia, U.S.A.). The goals are simple: contribute, influence and win (or come darn close anyway). Armed with great support from Kona's cast of incredible sponsors, look for this cast of wildly talented bicycle riders to make big waves in the coming months.

Connor Fearon riding to a top 10 in Leogang.

Downhill
Connor Fearon's 2013 race season ended with a bang–10th at the World Cup Finals in Leogang, Austria. The result landed the young Australian rider firmly amongst the sport's elite. Helping push him toward continued success in 2014 comes fellow Australian and junior phenom Andrew Crimmins, who, at 16 is one of the fastest DH riders in the world. The two will be racing one of the lightest downhill bikes on the circuit - the Supreme Operator.

Antoine Bizet one of the few to flip the road gap. The jump is a bit corked and is a bit hard to trick. Few riders pulled big moves off it.

Big Mountain / Slopestyle
Kona is proud to sponsor two of the sport's most exciting riders when it comes to Big Mountain, Slopestyle and Freeride. Aggy came a slipped grip away from winning the 2013 Red Bull Rampage, while Bizet's double back flips, front flips and all-round go for it style won him numerous Best Tricks at a host of European slopestyle events. Both have huge plans for 2014... huge, secret, blow-the-world-away plans. Stay tuned.

Matthew Slaven rallied to a second place finish overall just 5 seconds behind Riddle.

Enduro
Portland, Oregon-based Enduro racer Matt Slaven was off to a banner start in 2013, taking his Process 134 to a flurry of podiums until a bum in a park shot him in the shoulder, knocking him out what was promising to be a career season. But a bullet can't keep a good man down. Look for Slaven to come out of the gates in 2014 with a new found hunger for domination.

Cross-Country
The XC boys, who saw victories in the 2013 BC Bike Race (Kris Sneddon) and Mongolia Bike Challenge (Cory Wallace), a streak of wins in 100 mile MTB races (Barry Wicks), and podiums at the U.S. National Championships and Crankworx (Spencer Paxson), will look to continue their winning ways in everything from multi-day stage races to 24 solo marathons; hour-long super crits to gravel grinders. In 2014 look for the XC Team to be at the Sea Otter Classic, Whiskey 50, BC Bike Race, Single Track 6, 24-hour World Championships, Dirty Kanzaa 200 and many more punishing events around the globe.

Cyclocross
Led by current UK and European Cyclocross Champion, Helen Wyman, American cross contenders Barry Wicks and Spencer Paxson have their sights set on competing for podiums on both the national and international scene. Aboard her newly designed and lightning quick Super Jake, Wyman will continue her ultimate quest to win the World Championships.

 Classic santa cruz

Not saying getting shot in Santa Cruz is inevitable, but I can't really recommend anyone bring their nice, expensive bike there to ride either.
  • 8 1
It's true, Santa Cruz should just be avoided at all costs.

And South Dakota too! Shootings everyday and shit. And no riding either....

If anyone wants to take the bet, my money is on Aggy for the next Rampage.

Kona needs a new Aggy edit, he is the sickest!!

I want to see Aggy ripping it up on the process 153!

To hard to pick a Rampage winner. I would pick Bizet, Zink or McGarry because they are willing to "big" trick big mountain hits. And everybody is going to stay on line next year after what happen to Zink and McGarry this year. So we are going to see some very nice and complete runs next Rampage. IMO.

In a competition like Rampage getting to the bottom is anything but guaranteed. The whole thing is one sketch line after another and you have to be able to ride that line like its 2nd nature. Zink, I mean sure. He can ride big mountain with the best. Bizet and McGarry have great tricks but at rampage I am going with true big mountain ass kickers. Aggy is certainly that, and a bag of tricks that he does with great style. Having said that, McGarry's run was special, and that is the best POV i have ever seen.

Rampage is a gamble. Still fun trying to predict winners. Harder still to predict the weather. Can only hope 2014 Rampage has a warm sunny day with no wind and hard packed soil.

I am with you on that. Was very stoked to see the second runs, and so disappointed when they called it.

Kona's got great heritage, some of the most exciting bikes on the market, and a solid team. Stoked to see them make a comeback!

 no Alex Stock?

 I was thinking this same...

When are they gonna release the Process line in carbon? All three of those bikes would be so sick with carbon frames. They know how to build light carbon frames (Hei Hei and Kahuna) and now they know how to build strong carbon frames (Operator) so now they just need to combine it!

Anyone else surprised by Slaven's choice to race the Process 134 over the 153?
  • 2 0
Are they aloud to switch bikes for each event? Can't understand using a 134 over a 153 either
  • 4 0
Switching bikes for each event is not an issue. Many of the courses used in the Oregon Enduros as well as many North American Enduros are well suited for the 134.

I wonder what fork he'd have on the 134. I emailed kona about putting 150 pike on it and the response was basically, we've already decided what's best...140 revelation.
I expected more like a, "ya that would slacken it, so if you want to rock it, do it"

What's the obsession with carbon??? As if shaving grams, oz, or even a pound of the bile is gonna make u perform better. How about losing a few pounds our selves and stop pointing the finger at the bike! If that makes any sense...

  • 2 1
Or how about both you AND the bike shave a few pounds off.

IMO Carbon feels way more stiff then Aluminum and reacts better in the corners and rough sections like rock gardens.

Slaven is gonna race the 134? Figured hed be on the 153.
And yes, I'd would have bought a kona 153 frame by now...if it was in carbon.
