Maybe there needs to be a minimum delta, regardless of the rider. You not only need to get down the course, but within a certain percentage of the fastest time (or average, whatever). With enough pace to clear each feature and with a margin of safety. I'm not keen on watching someone become a paraplegic live on tv.

My guess (and only a guess) is insurance is a big deal. Our renewal costs for our strata have gone through the roof over the last few years, I can only imagine what liability coverage for even a local event would cost.
