Opinion: Stuck in the Middle - World Mental Health Day 2022
Hi Matt,
Sorry to hear about how the psychologist you were seeing wielded the diagnosis sword. I have a lot of issues with mental health diagnosis, yet as a mental health professional, I have to give individuals a diagnosis if they want their insurance to cover any mental health services. There should be a lot of psycho-education involved when giving someone a diagnosis so that a person can be informed and have a solid framework to understand the symptoms they are experiencing.
We should always use person-first language. I hope that you don't feel like your diagnosis defines you. You just happen to be a person who is experiencing some of the symptoms that the DSM defines as being on the spectrum - nothing more. In reality we are all on the spectrum of humanity.

@blackercanyons: I have been doing exactly that. Branching out into other outdoor pursuits while trying to become a more skilled rider but not focussing pushing progression by taking increasing risks. Getting too old for that. It is also probably a good idea to have more than one outdoor passion that keeps you mentally grounded.

Confidence is a fragile thing. Confidence is basically having enough positive experiences to quiet the brains stress response system in potentially dangerous situations. Unfortunately it only takes one traumatic experience and the whole thing collapses. One thing that has worked for me after particularly bad crashes is to focus not on how you were able to ride a particular trail before the crash but on how you are going to start riding it again. You can retrain your brain by slowing down your pace, being precise and slowly building up that confidence. The trick is to find that middle ground in which biking is not anxiety provoking but still keeps you on your toes. In my experience my worst crashes have been when my confidence is low and I am not riding loosely or in seemingly mundane situation and I lose focus.

Opinion: Be More Like Chris
@rockandride6: AHHH Santa Cruz. I had been surfing since the early 80's, a surfboard shaper on Maui... Santa Cruz made me hate surfing and move to greener pastures. Santa Cruz was more aggro in the 80's but there were at least rules. You didn't have wavestormers who think it is ok to go to from Costco to the main peak and paddle for every wave.

RockShox Lyric Ultimate 29" 180mm
$550 USD2021 RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 42mm offset boost spacing. Right now this fork has the 2020 air spring installed as I did not like the 2021 air spring. RockShox has actually gone back to an air spring much more like the 2020 for their 2023 forks. I also have the original 2021 air spring as well as a 170mm air spring shaft if you wanted to change the travel.
The fork has been lightly used for about a year and has no scratches on the stanchions and only one very minor scuff on the lowers which is only on the very surface of the paint. The steerer tube is cut to 7 9/16"
