Trek Partners with NICA to Create Scholarship to Increase Diversity in Mountain Biking
@hamncheez: Just a thought, I know the picture used in this article shows a person with African heritage, but when the program states bringing mountain biking to "diverse and underrepresented communities" what made you focus on "Black Americans"? In my opinion there are many marginalized communities that are not equally represented in cycling including Asians.

Video: Riding Northern California Trials Before & After the Wildfires
@squidmedia: Regardless of whether your video is harmful and disrespectful or not, I applaud you on the social and emotional maturity you showed in your response. I am not sure why this video suddenly stirred up controversy when 10 other videos showing dudes gouging out fresh fall line loam trails or riding in slop get nothing but praise.

Podcast Round Up: Vaea Verbeeck on Progression, Kade Edwards' Red Bull Sponsorship, Being a Responsible MTBer, & More
@blum585: That would be great. I feel like mountain bike content sites do a really good job of getting people amped up to get out and ride but are not doing enough to educate riders on behavior that will promote the longevity of being able to access our trail networks. There is some responsibility here on their part. It can be as simple as stopping and thinking about how viewers behavior may be effected when they watch videos with the word "Slop" in the title. I know everyone wants to just keep this bike party going but my head is starting to hurt and we are going to be in for one hell of a hangover if we don't check ourselves.

Podcast Round Up: Vaea Verbeeck on Progression, Kade Edwards' Red Bull Sponsorship, Being a Responsible MTBer, & More
Extremely relevant here in Santa Cruz CA right now. All of this interest in being a responsible mountain is bringing some hope back to me. Things have gotten out of control in my neck of the woods so I have decided to try and do something about it. I have been doing trail maintenance, putting up signage and writing letters. Just last week I sent out a letter to many of the larger purveyors of mountain bike web content about the need to start running some articles about being a responsible mountain biker. Nobody (including Pinkbike even responded) except the folks at NSMB who may be running a short article I wrote on the topic. I am sorry to hear that other riding areas have been negatively impacted but I am a little relieved to get some validation in the fact that this enduro craze is out of control.

The Pinkbike Podcast: Episode 35 - Things in the Woods (Story Time Edition with RC)
Fly fishing when I was younger out in the middle of nowhere near Potter Valley in N. Cal. I was hiking out of the Eel river valley bushwhacking up the mountain when I heard a whistle. I stoped and looked around, didn't see anything and kept going. I then heard another whistle so I stopped again. That is when I saw the cartel dude with an AK-47 leaning against a tree. I made a 180 pivot kept my head straight and walked back down the way I came up. As soon as I was out of sight I ran like hell just incase the guy decided to change his mind. If it wasn't for the fishing gear, I think there is a chance I would have gotten dropped right there. A relative of mine who also lives up in rural Mendo told me a story recently about hearing screaming coming from the hillside above his property. Later that night, a neighbor drove past some guy covered in blood carrying a machete walking blindly down the road. I spent my childhood being able to explore those mountains without a worry in the world. I would come across some hippie's pot patch once in while but there was nothing to worry about, just keep going.

Kialani Hines, Eliot Jackson, Austin Warren & Brian Lopes Introduce Kids to Cycling
I work in the public school system and am in grad school to be a school social worker. In my experience working with kids, getting them outdoors on bikes is one of the best positive interventions we can do. I work with a local organization leading bike trips and wrenching on bikes. For all of you out there who enjoy working on bikes. put an ad on Craiglist seeking bike donations for local schools. You will be surprised at how many people have perfectly good kids bikes collecting dust in the garage. Once you get them cleaned up go to your local schools and talk to the counselors or principals and they will most likely have a list of underprivileged kids who would love to have a bike.
