Releasing this video feels like I’m spilling the beans on a juicy secret… I’m from Vancouver but also grew up part of the year in Central France where I have taken my bike on countless adventures. The “Massif Central” of France is a place I am very attached to and few people from outside the region know just how incredible the bike trails are. At first glance you might have difficulty finding much (there’s basically no trails mapped on Trailforks). You’d be easily forgiven for leaving the bike at home and going on one of the thousands of hikes that the area is known for, but if you connect with some of the local rider, maybe bribe them with a Pain au Chocolat it’s likely that the Auvergne will make it on your top 10 places to visit.

I’m drawn back to the rugged no-bullshit attitude people have in these mountains, and it’s obvious that those who live and ride there are proud to call it home. Riding through these landscapes, it’s quite humbling to experience a place that feels like your life is a quick blip in its long history. Looking up from my bars and seeing the 12th century “Château de Murol” marking the horizon, riding down century-old paths that once were the economic and social arteries connecting villages to each other or shuttling up the Mont Dore in the still working all wood and metal hillside elevator built in 1898, now classed in the “Monuments Historiques” reminds us to pause and reflect on the moment.

And that is why this place, shaped by now extinct volcanoes, is so special to me. If you see this video, share it with a friend and if you are ever near Central France make sure to bring a bike and a few euros for coffee. Heck - buy a beat up Peugeot to cruise around, chat with the locals and eat a Truffade after a long day. That’s what I did for the past six months and I have made some incredible lifelong memories! -Tristan Deggan.

Mountain biking has brought an immense amount of happiness into my life, a joy that is almost beyond words, and I thoroughly enjoy sharing that joy to others. I am very attached to the place where I was born, so being able to share it through this video is an absolute pleasure. Filming with Tristan is simply amazing! We share the same vision of cycling, and with this video, we wanted to convey the same message. We are truly delighted to share the magic of the Auvergne trails with you." -Gabriel Magnaval.

Trailforks is about a collaborative effort, if there are no trails then go ahead an map it yourself, help others discover that amazing location and those trails. Use your ridelogs and add the missing access roads and trails, add reports, get in contact with the local trailbuilders, create a trail association, promote the trails... but all that is too much effort ofc, better just complain "there are not trails on Trailforks"

All that you said was true when it was free, now they take your user generated content and sell it on. Remind me again why I’d spend my time mapping trails?
  • 9 4
@Peskycoots: where do you see that they sell the content? stop talking about things you don't know about. And even, if they sell it, I guess then you don't use any free service at all, because you know, if you don't pay you are the product. You don't want to collaborate, fine, but hey let others do whatever they want. Thanks to Trailforks I have discovered awesome trails, riders that are now close friends and helped local trail associations to get up to speed, get more visitors and increase their revenue. But no, trailforks is evil.

@elyari: I’m not really sure what you’re trying to tell me. I’m just pointing out you can’t use trailforks outside your local area without paying. So you get to map your local trails for trail forks to sell to others. Shit deal.
  • 9 1
@Peskycoots: The charge is for the app, not the data - the website works fine as far as I know. Last time I checked, the copyright licence for the trails allows anyone to access them (as long as you attribute them to TF), so if you want to build your own free app to access the trails then there's nothing stopping you! Trailforks costs money to operate, you can't eat your cake and have it too.

Though I think fewer people would have been annoyed at TF pro if they'd made it free for people who had contributed enough...
  • 1 1
@TheCorminator: I’d be up for paying a tenter for the app. I’m not subscribing to access user created data though, unless I get paid for my contributions?
  • 3 1
@TheCorminator: you do know that if you accumulate more than 1000points you get TF for free right? But no, you don't know it. Here is the link: www.trailforks.com/pro/localadmin

If you want you don't even need to add content, just by linking your Garmin, Wahoo or Strava account to TF your activities will sync to the platform and per each activity you get 0.3 points, per each POI you pass through you get 0.2, per each check in on a trail head you get 0.1, per each mark ridden trail you get 0.2 points, per each vote you get 0.5points. And if you want to get those points quickly you can add content, trails, routes, photos, videos, reports after your rides so the trail builders know the current status of the trail and act on it.

@Peskycoots: Do as you like, someone will think less selfishly than you do and map the trails, so they will be available for everyone. You want to comment how shitty is the deal, go and stand on the line or comment on this post www.pinkbike.com/news/introducing-trailforks-pro.html#commentform

And by the way, the web site is COMPLETELY FREE, so go ahead, use it on your cell phone, there you have, all the trails of the world in your hand. You are welcome.

@elyari: I’m surprised you can get these long ass comments out with all that chubby corporate dick down your throat. Unionise child, solidarity with your fellow working man, stop handing your agency to corporations.
  • 2 0
@Peskycoots: As @Elyari and I pointed out, you don't have to subscribe to access user created data, you can see the website and all the trails without even logging in. If you don't want to pay £10 a year for the app (which you said that you did) then that's your choice, but the widespread expectation that "everything on the internet should be free" really grinds my gears.
  • 2 0
@Peskycoots: "corporate dick down your throat" Oh dear...

"stop handing your agency to corporations" the last thing I'll say on this, feel free to put your money where your mouth is and make a free, open source app to replace Trailforks. Or just gurn on pinkbike about them not running Trailforks for free, whatever works.
  • 1 3
@TheCorminator: so that’s great, you should be lapping up all those sweet free trails. I’m not sure why you’re complaining about me, complaining to a guy who’s complaining about people not marking trails on Trailforks.

I think you missed the point I'm making. It's exactly that "effort" of finding these hidden gems through contact with locals that makes the area so special. Sure, sometimes it's great to whip out a fully plotted area to check out on an app but I believe that the scarcity of marked trails makes for a more exciting adventures!

Damn, Gang Starr is great. y'all need to get out more. Cool video

Merci Tristan et Gabriel pour cette belle vidéo.
I lived in Auvergne, Puy-de-Dôme, 15 years ago and sometimes I miss these mystic landscapes and the strong personnality of its people and culture. You've made want to go back there, also because they have the best cheeses in France (St Nectaire, Gaperon, Salers... :-)

Indeed, on dit chocolatine pour une chocolatine, et pain au chocolat pour... du pain avec du chocolat à l'intérieur. Indiscutablement.

Bonne chocolatine au chocolat!!!
