F**k, I feel you.
I fell at North Star 8/11/12. Could not walk for a couple of days & iced. Started to ride on it about 2 weeks (couldn't bend my knee or put much weight on it).
2 months of agony I in to a knee doctor...he was not sure whether my PCL was still attached and what other damage I sustained. He told me to take a month off of everything to let it heal up the rest of the way. I got X-rays and a MRI on it over the month.
2.5 months I found out most of my pcl was torn (just barely hanging on) and minor damage was sustained to other ligaments.
3 months I went in to get sized for a PCL specific Brace from CTI instead of looking for surgery. I rode every day for a week (knee payed for it).
4 months started PT.
5 months I felt strong enough to ride regularly.
6 months I felt very good, but my knee was still week.
10 months I rode Whistler for a month. I stopped wearing the brace because it was bruising my leg.
11 months took a break from riding when I got home (two weeks).
1 year, due to PT and having a reason to strengthen my knee for support I am feeling close to before I did my knee.
Currently I am hesitant on getting surgery because of the super long recovery.
My knee only has 3/8" of play.... LOL
It is not painful for normal day stuff.
In your case were your knee is destroyed; you need surgery to be able to do anything.
Please do not stop riding, just do all mountain (more fun than you would think), continue to downhill (what I did), or pick up XC :-(
Best of luck to you.

I've blown up my knee as well. Sold all my gear, bikes... As I couldn't walk for 6mo, then just as things were feeling ok with pt, had surgery, and feared I'd never be back on a bike again. Well, I'm still riding dh, and have taken up xc and all mountain/enduro stuff to strengthen my knee.
The desire to ride never goes away. I completely tore my acl, mcl, destroyed cartilage, meniscus. And I ride just as aggressively as before.
Wife nearly killed me though, as our first born son was only 9 mo old, and I was no help at all.
And I'm nearly 40. You will ride again...

i have to wait 4-6 weeks to see if surgery is going to be necessary.. i spoke with two ortho's and they both think i can heal without it. shit sucks!

nah dont go down that road, theyre really just waiting until the swelling goes down and everything kinda sorts itself out but i would def go for the surgery man. check out Dr. John Parker in los altos. hes the best in the biz and did both my brother and my ACLs

I have Kaiser so I can't pick the ortho... There actually isn't much swelling because I RICEd it well after it happened. I know my MCL can heal without surgery... It's just the PCL in question. Time will tell..

be really careful with that man, when i tore my MCL PCL and severed my ACL playing rugby i didn't really understand the damage it would do if i didnt spend the time and let it heal properly, lets just say, it was the worst decision i have ever made, i can't walk anywhere with out my knee giving out after time, since i have over 20 degrees of play in my right knee now to the point where i can turn my shin and foot sideways and still move my thigh vertical almost 9" with my lower leg rotated 90 degrees at the knee. i went though physiotherapy 3 times a week for 1 year to get it to where it is now. and now my foot is permanently rotated 10 degree's when i walk or ride bikes.

Funny, I said the exact same thing when I wrecked there this summer...Hope you have a speedy recovery man. Don't skimp out on the PT. It really works. Heal up!

dammit,my stomach just turned upside down because of how bummed i am for you...i really cant say anything but i do hope you heal fast and be back real soon (and somehow stay injury free).

i don't want to be done, but my wife is not happy with my MTB life.. constant injuries.. i don't know yet, it's gonna be a while before i can ride again.. time will tell i guess. at this point i would say i'm done
You make me want to push myself even harder. Mad healing vibes bro, my collarbone is good to go in a few days, so I'm ready to start pushing again. I hope you make a full recovery and can start pushing the limits again in a few months.
