Not vital to survival nor either growing muscle mass, most North Americans eat plenty of protein and more than needed most of the time, that's all I was trying to portray, and for the recovery times I'm not quite sure if that is scientifically true, protein if not used to create amino acids and things to reproduce cell tissues etc, will actually be stored until needed so if you eat more than you need its really adding weight rather then increasing cell production, from what I remember. Just saying not trying to fight.

 people trying to gain more muscle mass must eat more than their metabolic rate. for me, thats 3000 calories a day. An average person eats what, 80-100 grams of protein a day? that is only 320 calories! I can assure you that having around 2700 calories of just carbs and fat alone won't help gain any healthy weight. A common rule of thumb for gaining weight is 1-1.5xbodyweight should be the amount of protein each day. Otherwise you load up on tons of carbs and fats in order to achieve the right amount of calories, and that won't work out so well.
