 Totally agree that should be part of the process, Red Rubber Grease is ideal.

 @northernchimp: Red Rubber Grease is fine to use on the caliper seals themselves but is too thick and sticky to coat the pistons with. It would attract a tonne of brake dust and would probably speed up getting crudified again!

 outboard pistons both front and rear are sticking. 2016 shimano xt (two years old)

Outer piston, front calliper - lazy/sticking
Weeping seals on rear calliper - presumably caked in crud.

 My rear inside pistons on SRAM RSC Guides is the sticky one
