I knew it. Bikers will save the world! coolest idea ever.

this was a great contest. The guys at MIT powered a supercomputer with a bunch of bicycles. It would of been cool to try to power one of the pinkbike servers with pedal power...maybe next year.

a similar thing was on Dragons Den. (brittish people would know about what it is). pretty cool idea. well done

i think that is a good idea but its has very low ground clearance! the footage iv seen of people who would need these most dont use a very good road / track. maybe higher clearance for next model

funny thing actually 5 minuts before i saw this on pinkbike as vod, i watched it on the main page of you tube

so like its a great idea and all but how many ppl in third world places are going to be able to acualy buy one of these bikes ???

The whole point of projects like this, especially those funded by companies like Google is to help people, I can't imagine they are going to cost much, if anything (for the end user). If they were too expensive for the people who need them most to afford them, then the whole project would be worthless.

I think you guys all have the idea behind VOD incorrect. The idea for us, when we created it, was to promote a video of the day. Meaning, it can be anything we decide upon. Just because this bike isn't hucking, or got 10 inches of travel doesn't mean its a bad video. Instead, it is saving hundreds of lives a day, and is a incredible idea.
If you guys could save lives by hucking your bike i am sure you would be VOD as well.

Im guessing that the cost of the bike would be subsidised by large corporate sponsors and aid organizations so the people who need them would get them for very little cost. My only question would be what sort of gearing would it be. I wouldnt like to ride a bike full of water up a hill with no gears.

Alright - to everyone that thinks that this will be SOLD to people in africa or similar places... Think about it. This bike was most definitely designed to be a charitable donation... things are only sold if theyre meant to make a profit. do we sell food stamps to poor people? no, WE GIVE THEM. freebies. l2think kthx.

The reality in much of the world is that women indeed do this kind of work. Look at the vast majority of homes in the Western world and we still see women doing the majority of the cooking, house cleaning etc. We may bristle at the thought of calling it what it is, but by providing an opportunity for women to reduce the time and effort required to tote water then they might have more time to do other things like learning to read or earn money to help improve her family's economic situation.

its a great idea, but how to introduce it in 3rd world countries and whos gonne service it there?

A visit to China 15 years ago showed tire patch vendors who would fix a flat while you waited. Punctures are common, and as tires/tubes get older they grow less flexible so many of these vendors also carry a collection of tires/tubes to replace the one you've just sliced. Bikes are ubiquitous in developing countries, and so are the means to keep them serviced.

well, a nice idea for a design contest, but hardly possible to introduce in the harsh reality. And trekrules, it's not the best invention introduced to the bike market. First of all, it's not in the market yet (and not likely to ever be), secondly I personally consider e.g. the suspension fork way more important

It makes me so sad to see people are not thinking positive about this. I hope all the people with the negative comments feel better about themselves. You would cry yourself to sleep every night if the same situation was brought upon you. We are all humans, we all bleed, we should all unite and help the poor countries. If we can't help the poor countries, we should at least try to buffer their suffering. AS these very intelligent people have done. There should be more people like you and your team out there!

its a great idea but the problems would be distributing the bike to third world countries, finding areas passable by bike, having a way of filling the back tank, and what happens when the filter expires? im not trying to downtalk this bike i think its a great idea but if some one can fix all the flaws this has the opportunity to save many lives

Google, a company with a market cap around $250 billion funds a project in cooperation with Specialized and an international development organization, and you are the one who is smart enough to find the "flaws"? Just because a nation is classified as "developing" doesn't mean they don't have roads for god's sake, however rudimentary, and if there is a water source (finding the source isn't the problem being addressed here), you really don't think it would have a spout? Which could literally be a piece of Bamboo cut in half? And to top it all off, you apparently ride a Kona, so your judgment is questionable to begin with.

Why not just have a trailer that you can fit to any bike?
Surely a mountain bike pulling a trailer would be better suited to road conditions ( dirt roads ) in these countries, the trailer wheels could operate the filter and it could have a hand winch for filtering while the bike is stationary.
When the trailer is not attatched, the bike could be used for other purposes.

For one reason or another I can't veiw the video. but andy-manc's trailer idea sounds like a good solution to most of the "crappy bike" comments.
