The 2013 Lyttelton Urban Downhill went off yesterday 16/03/2013. With stacked field of 80 riders, an amazing course designed by local downhiller and trail builder Nick Sutcliffe, that featured gaps over driveways, drops off garage roofs, jumps on & off shipping containers, and for the finally a large step-down off a pubs balcony.
This is one of the better POV videos I've seen. Perhaps it's the audio, but I felt like I was there shredding the course as I watched and thinking, "STAND UP AND PEDAL HARDER!"
LOVE these urban DH races...LOVE watching them that is....i would be in a broken mess even attempting some of those gaps! Gets me pumped up just watching it...awesome riding fellas!!!
This track is amazing. The riding is quality too but can you imagine getting to ride this and seeing a pair of boobs on the way down too...heaven. There should be more boobs in mountain biking
Hey Captain, there was one girl competing - Harriet Harper - she ROCKED! got 24th overall. Now, this is my benchmark for the next year... stay tuned.
I do agree there is not enough boobs in mountainbiking, in DH espacially, but how many girls do you know that would be keen on doing this type of race?
Awesome video! I wish these pov cameras would be pointed a little higher though. I always feel like I am throwing my own head back to get a better view. But you do feel like you are in the race! hahahaha
NZ, sick event.. Now we see these Urban DH Races going abroad and with great crowds..!! Can't wait to see the Urban World DH Cup in 2014.. I'd seriously say that South America's Urban DH races are way sicker, the stairs are always gnarlier and the consequences are way beyond what u can think of..!!
There needs to be more downhill bike on the street riding type videos. I don't want to get into how racing ruins everything but some freeride street riding on downhill bikes would make for some incredible videos.
I would love to speak to the course designer about some of the features, obviously couldn't choose between them so stuck em all in!
Completely awesome track and nice one mate for your 16th place, well earned!
@ bomb lad - a couple of secret plans for new features are already in motion for next years race. It is going to be bigger and better in such a crazy way. You should book a flight now for mid March 2014 - enter early and race one of the coolest urbans on the planet! This course is sick!
growing up in a city, and not way out in the wilderness like so many of the videos coming out of this place, i love this stuff so much. speaks to me on a personal level, and its godamn nuts.
i bet you every one who leaves a comment on hear is looking at their town differently now i no i do .
my urban race would start off from on top of the pub .
Those were both cool videos to watch. The urban DH courses look pretty brutal. It would be fun to see it live or ride one to see what it's really like.
They kinda have really, maxxis do a holly roller 26x2.4 (more like a 26x2.6 because it has a surprisingly big carcass) that comes under their FR category.
I use them for some urban fun on my mythic and their great
Yeah I'm the "noob" with my 30+ years of biking experience. Just think these big bikes are way outta place in this type of racing is all. But I forgot this is PB. and the trolls come out when you go against the grain, with your opinion.
p.s. Umm yeah our XC race trail is on the infamous Rumblefest trails. If you don't know about them then, sucks to be you guys. The Rumblefest is the best course on the Island, hands down. Arguably one of the best DH trails in the whole country. I've lost count how many people come here thinking they are the next Aaron Gwin or some other MTB hotshot. Do one run or half of one and walk away saying "f*ck that! That shit is f*cking crazy and steep". Then spend the rest of the day drinking in the finish area andchecking their shorts for skid marks. So in short.... Yes my local XC trail is harder then most DH courses I've seen. Look em up and see for yourself, plenty of media out there of them.
Cool story Jake, but I can tell you now, any less than a full DH bike and you wouldn't be placing a 1:54 lap time like Cam Cole the winner did. The top 3-5 boys are sponsored riders they want to win, they have multiple bikes to choose from do you think they would use something they didn't think they could win on? If you don't believe me you're more than welcome to come race it next year on your hard trail or enduro bike. Those transitions aren't as smooth as they look....
Jake - Where are the Rumblefest XC pics? Your profile has a ton of pics from the trail but no XC. Theres about 50 pics of people of full DH rigs, decked out in full armour hitting the same small jump made from a few logs. Any pics/vids of you shredding it on a XC? Not trying to be a dick or anything but you did say look em up for yourself....And why u gotta hate on people for riding a DH bike? Sorry we don't all have 30+ years of biking under our belt like the all knowing master that you are.
@C-Trides: If you go back and SLOWLY read what I wrote........ Our XC trails are on the same trails as our DH trails... I personally don't ride XC and never claimed to. Just stated that our XC trail is like most peoples DH trails. Also you CLEARLY didn't look hard enough at pics cause there are a few pic of some guys riding XC bikes.... Also if you go back up and read... I posted this in the wrong place it was ment for another thread.... It's easy to talk shit, yet I look at your profile and you have nothing on there showing you even on a bike or owning a bike or proof that you ride... So umm yeah...... But here is some footage to show you how steep our XC/DH trail is. I know coming from Ontario you have no idea what steep is. Not trying to be a dick or anything....
I love the fact that these urban DH races are catching on. Hope it trend continues. I just don't understand the need for them to race these big DH sleds, when you would be far better off on a DS/Slopestyle bike. Or even a HT would be a better choice fro these types of races. Endless travel and pedal bob seems so counter productive in a urban race. I mean, my local XC trails are more hardcore then any urban DH course I've seen yet.. Get some dudes on HT and DS bikes racing this stuff, it would be way better.
You're not including porn, are you? Ah-ha!
I do agree there is not enough boobs in mountainbiking, in DH espacially, but how many girls do you know that would be keen on doing this type of race?
Also 29" would be faster down here...
I use them for some urban fun on my mythic and their great
