Video: Morrison and Smith in Whistler 2012 - A Local's Guide

Aug 9, 2012
by Cycles Devinci
Whistler. International melting pot. Mountain biking mecca. Host of Crankworx—where for ten days livers will scream for mommy, while riders from around the globe gather to compete for glory and beaucoup stacks of cash. Beneath the spotlight, around the darkest corner, doubled-over behind the dumpster… local flavor still hangs on here. Their secrets have remained mostly locked and guarded. Until now.

Hi. I'm Ian Morrison and I guess you could call me a local. Dropping into Whistler during Crankworx is often too much for even the most seasoned vets. So I thought I’d do my pal Stevie a favor and show him how to survive the mayhem before the shit gets real. Here’s a run-down of how it all goes down, Whistler style:

photo

• One dumbo is never enough at Sushi Village.
• Stopping in the middle of the trail is not a brilliant thing to do. I don't want to run into you and you don't want to be run into by me.
• Midday is not the best time to ride. But it is the best time to hit the beach and enjoy the “scenery”
• I'm not trying to piss you off, you're just going too slow
• The common myth of nothing cures a hangover. Feed the beast some Zogs Poutine to get you back on the bike for another day of riding.
• Yes, the GLC is right at the base of the mountain—making it awesomely convenient. It also contains the four food groups: babes, beer, burgers, and buckets.
• You might think no one notices that you haven't showered in three days. Fight the funk and shower... with soap
• Just because you have a human kinetics degree doesn't mean you should tell people how to ride a bike.
• Long hair is an aerodynamic advantage. (It's math. Don't question it.)
• Visors are meant to be put in the highest position. Without question it will make you a better rider.
• Support local shops, you might spend a few extra bucks but at least it'll be done right.
• The wildwood is not that good for breakfast. Don't be mis-lead.
• A single isn't an acceptable amount of booze. Doubles or bust.
• Your feet will stick to the ground in the clubs, get drunker, you won't notice.
• The speed limit is there to be broken and please stop driving slowly in the passing lane you are making everyone hate you… not just me.
• Bring your own Espresso machine, because real coffee in Whistler does not exist.
• If you end up underground at the end of the night, there is a 90% chance you are not riding the next day, you have reached the point of no return.

See you soon.

Devinci

Here's a good tip I've learnt, don't get over excited on the first day and break your collarbone. Whistler is annoying when you can't ride.

What's that pizza joint that makes those deadly wraps???? Those are the best !!!!!!

Oh MAN, this video is EXACTLY how I went broke! Breakfast at Elements, Beef Dip with Yam fries at GLC and Sushi Village for dinner.... shred by day, swim by afternoon... Whistler is the dream if you have money.

Im so stoked on the new section in Canadian open- @ 1:18 rode it the other day, that rooty loose stuff is so run to ride in and you can rip it so much faster than the old part!

how to eat for cheap :
grind 1 cup of oatmeal to powder in a bean grinder, put it in a glass, add a scoop of protein powder then mix with milk , drink it.
afterwards, drink orange/mango/apple juice/beer - a simple carb that'll get the complex carbs (oatmeal) and protein into your system fast and give you energy immediately. repeat every 3 hours.
a banana is a good idea to top the meal off, and a V8 if you need salty.

you can put the oatmeal and protein powders in a ziploc bag and carry it with you , using water instead of milk if you have a bottle handy.
total cost: about $2.00 . health benefits: you will become immortal and never have issues with needing to take a dump at weird hours in dodgy bathrooms (i.e., your bowel movements will become as regular as clockwork , your stools will be firm yet soft and your ass will thank you after hours on the saddle)

 thorough, yet oh so helpful.

shit you not. it works ( ...pun intended)
  • 1 0
hahaha, Great tip! I only carry 1.5 liters of Mt. Dew and bread, not so good in giving you energy and health benefits!

Anyone know what trail(s) they're riding from 1:06-1:23?

 • Long hair is an aerodynamic advantage. (It's math. Don't question it.)

f*ck yeah it is!
  • 7 0
He's just missing one minor addition. Stevie proves it, moustaches are an aerodynamic advantage as well
  • 3 0
3:18 = flow to the MAX

To be fair... those cheeks were pretty sweet...

So whats with the clown shoes line?
  • 17 0
high skinny bridges it never gets maintained and its sketchy.
  • 3 0
don't forget massively off camber corners that shoot you in to loose boulder gardens. ugly ugly trail
  • 3 0
but nothing is to sketchy for ian morrison, i think they didnt do cos its pretty flat
  • 3 0
That clown shoes line was gold! And don't deny it, we've all said the same thing Ian Mo said to our mates.
  • 2 0
 clown shoes is sooooooooooo shitty

 See for yourself: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkDmbnc3Mj4

This rider took then chicken line at the end instead of the steep ramp to a weird, and rather large drop.

Laughed hard at the clown shoes joke... nobody likes that track
  • 1 1
 why
  • 1 0
Because it's skinnys that never get maintained... and it's sketchy
  • 3 1

Nice "locals guide" if your rich. What they did in this video costs $300.00 to $480.00 a day (Elements, GLC, Sushi Village, Lift Ticket & Hotel).
  • 10 0
Ski resort towns are ridiculously expensive, but everyone knows that. I'm broke, so I ride AM and have a blast. Either way, it's good to see people out having fun whatever the price. For them, it's lift tickets and sushi. For me, it's a bit of gas money and a six pack of cold cans. Both ways rock.
  • 1 0
I think it would be a lot cheaper if you don't go out for dinner and lunch and cook/eat smart. E.g, make food that you can have the next day as left overs and stuff.
  • 1 0
 Welcome to Whistler.

 Thanks sweet cheeks lol

Watching stevie and Ian shred on video gets me super stoked to ride, watching Stevie and Ian shred the WBP in person when they blaze past you gets me even more stoked to ride! So my stokeage level is through the ceiling, can't wait for Sunday!

Thanks Sweet cheeks!.. LOL, where was she in the lake scene? that would have been next level, next time Goldstein! either way, sweet shredding on Devinci Wilson'sSmile calling Ian on the whip contest and Stevie on the Canadian open! See you in Whis!
  • 1 0
Not only do I agree with Ian about 'Long Hair', but he was also super helpful the other week when I was in the shop. Cool guy... My only concern is that Ian needs to spend more time at the lake to get rid on that 'Farmers Tan'. Cause we all know that a tan like that....will slow you down!
  • 1 0
 GREAT VID!!!!!

I love that "chundery" little section they rip into around 1:14...although I doubt Id like it very much on anything BUT a big bik ayee. Still looks fun and "swoopy" with ots of speed to carry to get you over the roots.
  • 1 0
Oh yeah, Also, is the vid shot in a true "one run" kinda way??? What I mean is: I don't know/remember the layout of WBP well enough, so... what I'm wondering is could you ride the trails in the order they'e riding them in the vid or is this edited together from all over the muntain??? Did hat make any sense??? if this is really indicitive of a "single run" and you can hit all that stuff in one go, that's a run I want to follow. Coming out of those tree's and into those TT's loos EPIC.

I can't believe its been 6 years since I was in last in Whistler with a bike to ride. I gotta get back up there. I'm always going to BC to see family and I hardly ever get to bring my bike with me.. LAME Frown

Whistler does not have to be that expensive if you don't have Devinci's credit card to rely on.... And yes the Wildwood breakfast is the best value in town!

  • 1 0
 Do it, they're super
  • 1 0
um, just out of curiosity as potential visitor.. how much would a day like that cost?
  • 4 0
About $60 for the lift ticket, say $25 for the breakfast (including tip and tax), $25 for lunch, depending on how much they drank $40 - $100 for dinner. Accommodation starts at about $80 per night in summer. Plus with Whistler, you need to allow some extra for bike repairs because getting that many runs in a day means stuff breaks all the time. It can be done a lot cheaper though if you just drink water and get your food from the supermarket.
