Now that the cat's finally out of the bag and the news about Aaron Gwin's new team is public knowledge, it's a good time to take a look back at some of the highlights of the American racer's career so far. From his early days on Yeti to his time with Trek, and then Specialized, Gwin has always been capable of delivering blisteringly fast race runs, no matter the course.
Things don't always go as planned though, especially when the racing takes place in Leogang, where Gwin has ridden without brakes, a tire, and in 2015 managed to win without a chain in one of the most talked about runs in downhill history. There's no telling what 2016 holds, but it's already shaping up to be an exciting year, with numerous high caliber riders switching teams and bikes. The start of the 2016 World Cup DH season in Lourdes, France, can't come soon enough.
First World Cup Win: Pietermaritzburg 2011
Look at the Time - Gwin's 8 Second Win: Val di Sole 2012
specialized really underestimated Gwin's market worth... 4 articles and a bunch of videos when he joins a new team... and like 500 comments. Not that I mind, I like YT more than spec
Specialized just always looks to innovate and change , they like what they have with Troy Brosnan and the new kids from lapierre's old dh team . ... but YT is awesome also, great freeride team now with great DH rider Gwin !
@TheDeadSailor hahaha made me lol. Gwin does not seem to interested in World Champs, I bet deep down he will really want to win it this year since it is at "his" track.
There wouldn't have been all this hype had he been staying at Specialized. It's simply just a hype train designed to build articles and intrigue around what he was doing. From the mysterious $ figures to the excessively drawn out announcement. If he had been staying at Specialized it would have been "Gwin signs with Specialized for next season" and that is all you would have heard about it.
I don't want to sound like a hater because I like Bruni... But right now he is in the same position as Danny Hart was in at the end of 2011... and look what he's done since. Nothing. It's a shame because I love watching him ride. I wish he'd get back to the ragged edge where he resided from 2010 until 2012. Much better to watch and also delivered much better results.
Maybe its my unquestionable loath for that company, but for some reason seeing Eric Carter talk with a Specialized logo in the background is beyond annoying. Couldn't be happier for Gwin's new move.
I see your point about point about the comparison between hart and Bruni. I just see different styles between the 2. Bruni seems more race focused, poised and oriented,While Hart seems more of the edge of your pants rolling chaos but fun to watch. Anyways, should be a great year, probably the biggest question is how the massive changes to Gwinns set up (tires and brakes thea in one's ) affect the reigning championso winning ways
Yeah but in the live transmission Gwins mentions that the bike suspension works better without the chain I remember that clearly also they cut something that rob warner said during the run, I can't remember what he said but I think they censor way too much.
OK, how’s this for a theory!! Because they know the bike suspension is better with no chain did they set the chain to snap after the initial peddle out of the gate, knowing Gwin can pump and ride the bumps faster than if he had a chain and peddled??? ;-) The only problem would be what damage the chain could do!!
I just checked out this vid on YouTube and you can clearly hear the conversation at the end. . Gwin def says the suspension works better without a chain. . Im gonna have to remove my chain for some laps this summer to see for myself! Gwinning!
Ha, I have friends who have broke chains going down trails, and have gone faster. But I think it's more the fact you know you have to keep momentum up and so throw all caution to the wind, pump like mad and keep your mitts away from the stoppers!
No chain is nothing compared to completing a run with no rear tire!! It's downhill, don't really need the chain anyway. But damn, no rear tire is pretty incredible. That's a strong rim!
@Dano98 and those pedal strokes are worthless without a rear tire on dirt/rocks/roots/sand. I'm far more impressed at no rear tire. I don't even know how he maintained balance let completely shatter the rim.
He'll get a lot more attention this year being Gwin's teammate than not most likely. Of course, winning world cups and overall titles will get the garner the most attention.
Gwins a awesome rider and everything. no disrespect to Arron but I just think its a little messed up that he gets more attention when he switches sponsors then Kelly McGarry gets when he dies. Why don't we see a post with the best Kelly videos.
I hope he is able to back the deal up with some solid results this year... mind you YT have probably got their money's worth out of all this publicity already.
Is Pink Bike on a GWIN Crusade with all the attention he is getting pre season, or is it just his marketing / manager who is pushing the GWIN brand so hard?
PB is a MTB news media site... they live for the news and by the news. Right now, AG is the biggest news out there so, what do you think they would be doing instead?
Paid or not, PB is the right place to watch MTB news. Period.
There is alot happening re teams and rider's......there was so much boohaa around this guy making a press release (that took forever) with the media gobbling it all up and further inflating a rather mediocre subject.
Now before the Gwin Fan Club burn me A the virtual stake, let me say he at least looks fast in his yt promo clip.
The above is obviously just my personal opinion on the matter.
Don't watch it then. If you don't think someone winning a WC race without a chain or beating the field by 8 seconds at a gnarly track is impressive, then I don't what you'd find entertaining.
@messmyth who cares? all of mountain biking. love or hate him Gwin has done more for the sport than any rider in recent history. a complete pro on and off the field, from USA who is coyly arrogant. Any MTB fan who wishes Gwin wasnt riding should be burnt at the stake.
I see two of your comments in the "below threshold" section. What is 'missing' and why are you bitching on a free to read and/ or free not to read website about a hobby most of us here would rather be doing than work/other life stuff?
If he had been staying at Specialized it would have been "Gwin signs with Specialized for next season" and that is all you would have heard about it.

Gwin "Right out of the gate"
Brosnan "You motherf*cker"
Pretty much sums it up.
