Whistler Mountain Bike Park Update: Creekside Gondola Opening August 7

Creek Opening

What is “History”? How far back do you have to go for something to be considered historic? How do you “Make History”? Have you ever looked back on a piece of Mountain Bike film from the early 1990’s and chuckled at the lack of suspension, inadequate helmets or skinny bars? You don’t have to look back too far in our sport’s short history to see some kooky fashion, or bike geometry trends change. Though short in geologic terms the history of MTB has been fun to observe and be a part of. I remember riding Blackcomb in the summer of 1992 on a fully rigid bike with a Girvin Flex Stem in a foam helmet with a spandex shower cap over it, drifting corners at speeds way too fast for the bike’s capabilities. Being a part of the sport’s history and evolution in Whistler was never my intention, it just sort of happened and I was along for the ride. I have witnessed the evolution of Crankworx, heck I even added the Pumptrack Challenge to the mix, I have seen legends grow from groms and friends build careers as pro bikers. I was there when the Park opened and then slapped a high five when the millionth rider loaded the Fitz chair a few short years later. I witnessed the Garbo Zone expansion and lead the charge to open the Peak and Top of the World.

Now its time for the next chapter in the history of the Whistler Bike Park, the opening of the Creekside Gondola for bike access as of August the 7th. Although quite likely to go down in history as one of the worst kept secrets, riders will be able to take advantage of ample free parking in the Creekside underground parkade in order to catch the lift up to access the Bike Park from the Raven’s Nest elevation down to the Village via advanced trails Freight Train, Duffman, Expressway and the trails that feed from those arteries. There will be return riding to the Creek via “Dusty’s Downhill”, an ‘Expert” level route which descends Franz’s ski trail and the existing fire road network on the south side of Whistler Mountain. An existing singletrack valley classic “BC’s Trail” (Black Diamond) will also be accessible via the fire road.

Whistler Creekside

The lift will operate from 10am until 5pm daily and WILL allow riders to download to return to their vehicles too. The lift will remain open 7 days per week until September 7th (weather permitting) when it will switch to weekends only until September 20th. Ticket and pass purchases will be available in CANSKI Creekside as well as a bike repairs, limited rentals and soft goods for sale. Trails inside the boundary will be inspected and swept by Bike Patrol daily.

This is the first foray into offering more lift access to the Park from the valley and the Creekside Gondola 2016 plan will largely depend on the outcome of this summer. Whistler Blackcomb is planning further mountain bike trails in the Creekside zone, however future trail development is subject to the approval of our new Master Plans by the Province of BC.

Will you be part of Whistler Mountain Bike Park history? Thanks for checking in, ride safe and I hope to see you in the Creekside. -BF

Pure speculation here, but this is what could open the door up to a UCI DH in Whistler. That side of the mountain is steep and gnarly, way more than the village side. They could build an absolutely insane track down there. There would be plenty of room to put the pits in the plaza by the gondola or even on the above ground, top level of the Creekside parking lot. The only unfortunate thing is BC Trail is going to get thrashed now. It's always been such a great, relatively quick lap living in Bayshores.

i dont think whistler gives 2 shits about a UCI DH race

They fd up the BC provincial Cup race this year so bad, i heard they have some serious work ahead to patch things up

@da1994canucks Just curious, I hear a bunch of people complaining about the race - apart from the raceplates falling apart, I didn't feel it was much different from other races, or was it? I haven't done too many races in BC, but I didn't notice anything too much out of the ordinary here. And the track choice was amazing in my opinion.

Implying that you need a steep and gnarly mountain to get a world cup DH track these days....

Just in time for the EWS... coincidence?? I THINK NOT.

not sure, there isn't a lack of potential stages

pretty much this. Let the route speculation begin!

I'm not knocking the improved parking situation, but how many people are going to drive into underground parking with bikes on the roof? 5 per year? more?
  • 1 0
I was thinking about that as well, what's the clearance on Creekside underground? Haven't ever paid attention since I only go there in the winter.
  • 3 1
most vehicles I see use hitch mounts.
  • 1 0
clearance is definitely not enough for even a car with a roof mount... anyway, I think they have those warning barriers. someday they'll just make sensor warning you that you're overheight... wouldn't be hard or expensive anymore.
  • 1 0
there is a northside entrance to the car park which has higher clearance. I'm sure WB have considered this

just when you think whistler has peaked, they let you sample the goods from the creek. thank you thank you ill be here all week

Will you be part of Whistler Mountain Bike Park history? -BF

No! This year I will not be part of this history cause I had this Visa request dinied here in Brazil but next year I will try again. I have money in the bank to go 100 times to Whistler, have an apartment and car in Brazil, dont have any criminals records and my Visa was dinnied cause I dont have how to prove that I work as a bike mecanic.
This year Whistler Bike Park will not see my money since I have my visa dinied and now I am going to one of the biggest bike destinations that are Finale Ligure and Swiss trails...
Looks like Whistler is trying to get bigger like all others bike parks in the world are doing. Thats good next year I will try the Visa again. Than I will go there to buy my dream bike and ride this trails that I dream about since the 90s. Next year I will be there...
Prop me down and say bad things about me I dont give a shhhhhhiiiii......

If it makes you feel any better @mudmandhbrazil you definitely aren't the only one. The visa system in Canada has gone to hell this year, so many people are getting knocked back at the moment. Hopefully it works out better for you next year!

Thanks a lot man it made me feel better. Its a shame that this dream place is not free to visit. I had a Visa for Canada back in the 90s and slept in Vancouver for one night but thats was when I was on MTB in 89. This week I gonna open my bike bussines here in Rio de Janeiro and next year I can prove that I dobt want to live in Canada. I know lots of bike riders with a lot of money and even with strong bussines in Brazil and get Visa dinnied. Its sad to whistler Bike Park, Hotels, restaurants anf specialy bike shops that need real turists to gain money. Thanks Treble3

When I was young my biggest dream was to go to Hawaii surf Pipeline and I did it twice. Since de beginning of the 90 my dream is to ride Whistler legendary trails and I know next year I will do it...

So just checking...a season bike park pass allows use of the creekside gondola too?
  • 3 0
Yep, jdigdog - Access via Creekside will be included in your season pass and day tickets.
  • 2 0
I hope they keep it mainly kybers and RDS style single track. There's not enough flowy and tech single track in the park currently. That said, Creekside is going to be going off!
  • 3 0
hmm wonder if RDS will be absorbed into park boundary in the future. Hope not but sounds possible now.
  • 2 0
Everything on or starting in WB property has been incorporated into their management plan. This has only meant good things so far!
  • 1 0
RDS was amazing today with all the fresh loam on the new reroutes
  • 3 0
As a resident of Creekside this is awesome news!
  • 2 0
They need to build a gnarly ass downhill track on that side. For anyone who has ridden Pleney in Morzine you will know.
  • 1 0
Wish this was known before I discounted staying in Creekside for our upcoming trip. Would have saved me a lot of money and would have gotten a better place.
  • 2 0
Finally a reason to consider staying in a place in creekside.
  • 1 0
So is this "Dusty’s Downhill" a new trail they are putting in or does it already exist?
  • 2 0
 It's new...
  • 2 0
Epoit is right, it's a new trail, imho4ep.
  • 1 1
I'm staying in Creekside during Crankworx! But I broke my collar bone recently and won't be able to ride. Frick sakes!
  • 3 2
Free underground parking in the sweltering August heat? Yes please!
  • 3 1
 Creekside needs this.
  • 2 1
Yes, September 2nd. I don give a shit where I stay once I get there
  • 1 0
Hell ya ! Creekside rules. Life is so so good!
  • 2 1
 i will!
  • 1 1
RDS already has been absorbed. It's maintained by park staff, I believe.
  • 1 2
There's a sign right at the very beginning that says "Bike Park Boundary. You are leaving the patrolled area" or something like that.
  • 1 0
 I need videos, STAT!
  • 2 1
 looks like a trek
