Interbike 2008 - WTB

Oct 1, 2008

The crew at WTB have been happy with the success of their Dissent tire (the official tire of the Whistler bike park), but why stop at being happy? This season they set out to improve upon that success and develop a new Dissent 2.3 as well as the new Prowler MX 2.3 through direct input from their team riders Ryan Condrashoff and Brad Benedict. We'll also take a look at their LaserDisc FR Wheelset.

Have a look at the tires and wheels in action inside:

WTB Dissent 2.3 Tire

The all new Dissent 2.3 has been designed from feedback from Brad, Ryan, the patrollers at the Whistler Bike Park and the Rocky Mountain FRO rider team. They all wanted a tire with a more square profile and better spacing between the center and side knobs. This is the result.

The center and side knobs are running in opposing directions. This is to give the tire a better bite in loose and soft terrain. The new Dissent 2.3 is available in 2 versions: 935 gram race model with folding bead, single ply casing and the 1225 gram Team DH model. Both models use WTB's Super Track DNA rubber compound.

WTB Prowler MX 2.3 Tire

The all new Prowler MX 2.3 is WTB's newest addition to the All Mountain/Trail line up of tires. The openly spaced square knobs dig into loose soils with ease, while the sipes allow the tires to also work really well in hard packs soils. The UST option will really make this tire a true all mountain riders best friend.

The new Prowler MX 2.3 is available in 2 versions: 860 gram race model with folding bead, single ply casing and the 1050 gram UST model. Both models use WTB's Super Track DNA rubber compound.

WTB LaserDisc FR wheelset

WTB's new LaserDisc FR wheelset is aimed squarely at the rider who is looking for a lighter than average DH wheelset, or even a rough and tumble set of wheels for their all around freeride machine. A 30 mm wide rim means you can still run the big 2.7" meat without getting any unwanted tire roll and they even come with eyelets for extra strength around the spoke hole.

The rim sports a unique feature that is hidden inside. A vertical support beam runs the entire length of the rim and provides a load of extra rigidity and counters the load created by spoke tension. Because the rim is truly only disc compatible WTB adds a small extra ridge of material where the brake track would be, which again can only help to keep things together in the long run. The final touch is the use of double butted spokes all around. Nice!

Thanks to Theo from All Out Productions for the riding footage of Brad and Ryan.

Yeah, take away the center groves on the side knobs and they may as well be.

the reason for that is because WTB's lead designer used to work for maxxis
(rumor)

Perhaps its because the Minions are a really good tire, and they're trying to emulate the basic design...

Why dish out $550 for LaserDiscs when you can get a super-strong set of mega-light Easton AM Havocs for $530 on PricePoint???

I'm currently running the Havoc AMs on my All MOuntain set and while they are nice, they are NOT DH race wheels. The WTB Laser Disc FR wheels are a lot burlier and better off for constant DH abuse.

not to mention the WTB laser disc heavy duty hub is one of, if not the lightest hub on the market

The Prowler MX 2.3 came on the front my DB Mission and I hated it on everything except hard pack. I was given a pair of the new 2.3 Dissents to try out and I love them to death. They feel alot like the Minions but dare I say hook up even better. Perfect All Mt tire however have yet to use them in the mud.

2.5 dissents single ply came on my flatline and they are just awful tires for the east coast or any where there are lots of roots and rocks. Pinch flat after pinch flat junk

Perhaps a higher tire pressure or thicker tubes are in order.

i agree the dissents arn't that great. i got a set just to burn off at the local mtn so i don't use good tires..got them for $20. the flatline should come with minions or prowler mx or something better.

They treads look like 2 of my favorite tires:
Dissent ~ Minion DH front
Prowler ~ Nokian NBX (sadly no longer available)
The proof will be in the sidewalls and the compound
