Video: Makken Guineas the GoPro Step-Down

Sep 24, 2014 at 15:15
by Red Bull Bike

The GoPro Step-down feature measures 50 feet from lip to landing, with a 25-foot drop. When Mads “Makken” Haugen decided to be the first Red Bull Rampage competitor to hit it, people took notice that someone had finally stepped up to the step-down. When he flew 15 feet further than needed on the impressive gap jump, the crowd of riders and diggers got the show they were hoping for.

“It’s not the smartest thing, contest wise, to start with the biggest objects on the line,” says Haugen in the video above, “but I just wanted to get it over with.”

After a few practice run-ups Haugen went for it and ended up coming in a little hot. The panicked “Whoa!” that came out of his mouth shortly after he left the lip let us all know he wasn’t feeling it. Still, the tenacious Norwegian held on and landed the jump heavy, blowing apart his rear wheel with a deafening clap. The assembled crowd — and Makken himself — went wild.

“Actually, I think I got a bit scared because I put a panic pedal in,” he recalls. “I obviously went pretty deep.”

Maaken knows mistakes are part of the game when you’re breaking new ground though, and he expects his brave first jump will make things simpler the next time around.

“I jumped it. I rode out of it. I taco’d my wheel,” he says. “But now I know how it’s going to be. Next time it’s going to be easier.”

I had a feeling there would be wood, companies want that exposure too much.
  • 16 15
Or with only a week's worth time of building, and at max. only 3 builders each, the riders would have never had the time to build something insane like that, unless finding the perfect spot. The wood was overdone last time but not this year and the riders have plenty of insane stuff to build. I'd love it if there was no wood because it would be awesome and interesting but the contest was run much differently back then to allow that to happen.

This really doesn't matter but I find it funny clicking onto a profile of someone who bitches about having wood on the course and finding out they were 9-years-old when the last "all-natural" Rampage happened... interdasting.
  • 10 0
Good to meet you too. Never said it wasn't insane, its just that a number of prominent riders were opposed to the wood. It looked like that was the consensus.
  • 3 1
Either way this is still sick.
  • 3 1
scott-townes what exactly do you know about building? Look at your profile and i dont see anything that makes you an expert on jumps. Or is it cus you have watched rampage before? And they have said already that the go pro step down was built to help the riders keep flow thru that section.
  • 4 6
Keen-ta- building dirt jumps has no bearing on knowing how much effort it takes to build a line... seriously? haha, ok.

freddie- it was a bit harsh, as long as you're stoked, that's all that matters. Its going to be very sick but I just see way too much bandwagon negativity towards it just because a few riders were opposed to the amount of wood used in previous years. A lot of different types of riders are competing in this event so naturally, not everyone is going to want the same thing but that doesn't necessarily mean it cannot be done in a way to improve the event overall.

Some of the top lines are just bonkers, so wood or not, it's going to be unreal.
  • 5 1
there's only three wood features this year to link up the bottom of the course (read/watch the other rampage articles)
  • 2 2
^ Which is kinda true except there's little opportunity after (no riders' lines were built so that can easily be wrong) and from my limited imagination, nothing more exciting than these absurdly big features, just stuff to finish of their lines, except for the canyon gap which does connect up two very sick parts and is insane. BTW the run-in for the canyon gap is absurd in itself like the last one so regardless of how you view the wooden features, I believe they're only adding to the event.
  • 1 4
just to clear this up your wrong scott , your going by last years info , this year they have had much more time to build with no limits on dig crew , the reason for wood is the same its always been sponsors + hype
  • 4 1
oh yeah? I guess they were lying when they only allowed 3 builder passes per rider or only allowed the riders to build starting the Friday before where everyone gathered to sign waivers and pick up plates/bracelets... because as you know, event organizers always like to lie about the rules pertaining to the comp.
  • 3 1
Its the companies that pay for the coverage so if they want to build a big wooden sender and put their name on it, that's fine with me
  • 1 1
are you retarded ... i think most of you are already by the defense of this sham that has become rampage .... the build videos alone have started how many days ago .... the event isnt till the 28th can you even do simple math and evidence with your own eyes..... and watch those videos and see how many people are on each line its far more then 3 per person.. that is simply lasts years info and not whats been happening , leave that aside and theres the guys who showed up themselves even earlier to begin scoping the site and finding lines. also read any info given before the event as they stated they will have more time and bigger crew but ya i guess there own info is wrong or lies eitherway big surprise there that redbull cant be counted on to actually follow up on what the actual riders of the event want.

as for the wood and "coverage" .. again are you all retarded this event has had plenty of coverage for well over a decade without mass of sponsors just because you all jump on the bandwagon doesnt mean it wasnt always the most widely know event since forever... the sponsors are simply here now to cash in on the riders hard work ...without again giving them any of the safety they request, like more time build crews and NO WOOD... but we all know this how you can defend it is beyond me... maybe you enjoy slopestyle ... this is a freeride event though... and thats what id like to see not features youl never see when you actually freeride...
  • 2 1
forget it you guys are exactly who they want and why it is this way .. il stick to FEST and what the riders actualy say vrs you goons anyday.
RAMPAGE IS A SHAM TV SHOW NOW , enjoy your "freeride" event kids ...sigh this is why we cant have nice things ... this is like nascar of biking where people are basically cheering to see people break themselves its a joke ... itl become all to real when someone gets even more seriously hurt then the myriad of broken femurs , ankles , etc etc etc get your heads out of your own asses off the sponsors dicks they dont do shit for the sport but leach money while forcing our best to risk life and limb for NONE of that sponsor doh... the prize money doesnt come off those named jumps and never has it comes from whatever redbull deems it ok to pay them for 1 2 3 the rest can drop off and break a leg for all they care and many do.... with no reward despite them being the ones who put on this little show for you to enjoy ....
  • 2 3
^ This is going to come off direct but you're a f*cking idiot. I was down there for the first build day (and had done this in 2012 as well), no rider had begun to build anything yet (they may have showed up previously to drive out there and check out the site). There are not many lines off the top so riders are sharing lines which is why you're sometimes seeing more than 4 people working on a section. It takes a lot of work and in the end, its just making it easier/quicker for people to get their lines built and more time for practice. You have no clue of how much money it takes to run this event and without the sponsors and CBS, the Rampage most likely would have never returned. That's one thing you naysayers are forgetting, it was never supposed to come back after 2004. A Rampage that's slightly altered is better than no event at all.

This is bringing massive exposure to big mountain riding and freeriding in general. If you weren't busy acting like an idiot, you'd remember that freeriding dropped off the scope of sponsors in favor for racing. Riders like Bourdo couldn't make anything close to a living after that happened. This will only bring in more opportunities for people with a freeriding focus- just like what FEST is doing. With increased exposure also comes a better chance that smaller, more raw big mountain/ freeride events will come about because sponsors realize its reaching a big enough market that they deserve to be paid more and have more events to expose their brand.

Riders know the risks, no one is forcing them to enter this comp. They're not clueless children, they know exactly what the deal is and they're doing it not for the money but because they love it. Now please, shut the f*ck up and enjoy the show.

im pretty sure its clear which of us is what ....but keep at it kid youl get all the props in the world from the noobs who probably never heard of rampage till it was too late , yea you missed what it used to be and why and if this is what you want you mouthbreathers can have it.... as i said FEST ... and they didnt need any of this utterbullshit that leaches of biking rather then adding to it ... with NO actual INTEREST in the athletes themselves and what THEY want ... which you all seem to be ignoring every year but then crying when EVERYONE who made it what it was drops out or criticizes it heavily.. see hopkins recent post , or did you not bother to READ since it wasnt an awsome gopro guiness mega sponsor vid of epic watch this for ad revenue shit ... or did you ignore last years cries for more ... did you read anyones statements or just watch highlight reels ... just stop wasting your time and go watch the nascar of biking and enjoy it cause it just isnt rampage anymore and barely has been for years.
  • 2 1
Alright, now I know you're f*cking with me because you're basically writing a bunch of crap that I've already acknowledged and you haven't stated one correct or relevant thing yet. I've already wrote that some (note that some, not all) riders are against wooden features and that they went overboard the year before but you're making a massive deal outta it, especially considering this is a completely new venue. Also is this the first ever mtb event you've watched? That's how all events are run. Unfortunately MTBers are highly underpaid which is something no one is denying along with FEST being possibly the sickest freeride contest series out there. We get it, you love to jerk it to FEST, you don't have to keep re-stating it. Man, you're strange and overly angry.

Oh yeah, still got the 2nd Rampage DVD along with the first Rampage included as a bonus... ahh the days of watching highlights online on tiny vid players with shitty quality and dial up. So stoked when I got that DVD and gotta say after watching it for the 14th billion time, I'm still very happy the event is continuing on and is helping in a big way to expose MTBing to a wider audience than ever before.

Also instead of speaking for the riders, how about you wait until the event is over and then get their impressions on the new site? That may sound too rational of a thing for you to accomplish but just try it. It's much better than using their impressions on LAST YEARS COURSE WHICH WAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CAPS LOCK!!

But really though, its a sad day when people who claim to be into freeriding are complaining about Rampage being around... but I guess that's what gapers do. Have fun responding and caring about "props". bye bye birdie Smile
  • 1 1
a simple profile check on you pretty much says it all ... people who claim to be freeride and gapers oh the irony lol i think were done here i am at least.
your typical and remedial .... and i knew i had read stuff from you before ... pretty much every rampage vid you spout the same crap ... you know what you should grab your single crown hit the rampage this year and break off it will do us all a favor on these forums lol ... u mad bro ?
il be out riding while your watching your classic dvd's with ....no wood no sponsors and blaw bla blawbla... ah forget it its clear your ignoring reality here. like i said im done.
  • 4 1
HisShadow, fucking self righteous know it all loud mouth dickheads like you are the worst thing to ever happen to mountain biking
  • 4 1
futureworldchamp- his profile is full of it, it's actually hilarious. Its a reason why I think he's completely f*cking around. No one can be that full of of himself. "i ride harder than you...." "destroying high froelher" which he can barely stay on the trail over 5mph in smooth sections... can barely make it down anything remotely rooty... shit I just admitted to caring enough to watch one of his videos. Shoot me now... right in the dickhole.
  • 2 1
hahaha i just looked on his profile and he's 31! I assumed he was some 14 year old based on all the shit he's chatting. Jesus some people need to take a good look at themselves.

"I ride -massive dicks- harder than you"

Quite the meaty gap to a pretty sniper landing! Seeing attempts like this from Makken where the smallest error like a pedal stroke spells disaster really gives perspective to how crazy these hits are when someone undoubtedly throws something nuts off that jump
  • 4 0
Oversgooting that jump would be the last thing you do at this years rampage... So much respect for these guys, rampage will be better than ever!
  • 4 0
Would a steeper landing help, looks a little shallow? Makken killin it though!
  • 4 0
Camera angles rarely do anything justice...but it does look like a pretty flattish tranny for a 25ft drop...certainly sniper as-is
  • 4 0
They built it up a few feet from what it was. It's actually pretty long/tall and if he doesn't do that extra pedal stroke he should be fine. Although I feel like with something that big, its always gonna look sniper.
