Whistler Bike Park Opening Day 2011

Well, there we go...as of this morning, the Whistler Bike Park is officially open for 2011! This marks the 12th year that Whistler has welcomed and supported gravity assisted mountain biking. It was touch and go for a bit leading up to opening day. Having had the biggest dump of snow since '99, the folks at Whistler Bike Park had to go for it to open on time - there was still lots of the white stuff on the ground.

photo

Not only did they get 'er done, they did so in style! The bike park had 10 runs dug out by 3 machines and 8 guys working like crazy. The dirt was surprisingly wicked, except for a few deadly wet and soft sections here and there. So cool to be on my Flatline ripping lap after lap again.

photo

Traction was great and the soil felt like chocolate!

photo

People at the front of line had waited all night to be on the first chair of the year. Crazy! The line at the beginning of the day only went to the end of the first queue and nearly all day the lines were very short, at times almost non-existent.

photo

How cool is it to rock a run and then roll right back onto the lift?

photo

The first few laps I did were with Keith White, the man behind the soundboard for 3 Minute Gaps and Freeride Entertainment (NWD Films). He's a total ripper and we pinned the first 1/2 dozen laps while we had lots of energy.

photo

After a dozen laps my hands, legs and smile were seriously worked. Time to do a few interviews! GoPro's Kris "Jaymo" Jamieson and I were filming for the next "Just the Tip" webisode - always a labour of love!

photo

Throughout the day, I had the pleasure of riding and shooting with a ton of shredders! The Whistler locals came out for the A-line train.

photo

Notable locals ripping it up included Banshee's Trevwah Burke, fellow speedster Ryan De La Rue, Alex Pro, Omar Abdel-Al, Mason Mashon. C4 Rider Training's Zander Geddes, Lee Jackson, and Jack Iles were also on hand. Everyone was pinning it!

photo

Red Bull's Cody Swansborough was on hand as well as Norco's Sam Dueck and his buddy Taylor Ratzlaff. I even saw one of the 'green guys' from the Vancouver Canucks hockey games rocking a big bike.

photo

It was super cool to have Alex Dove join us to shoot all the stills you see here. I don't know how those camera guys ride with heavy packs loaded with gear. We rode a bunch of A-line, Hornet, B-line, Crank it Up, Heart of Darkness, World Cup Singletrack, Ho Chi Min, Monkey Hands, and the GLC drop. Killer!

photo

It was good to be back! We were on the mountain from 10am - 5pm and it was sweet to shred the park again - it was a long winter. The park is in great shape and they're working hard to make it even better by the minute. Yeah! I feel pretty worked but I'm glad we arrived early and got to rip a full day...y'know what they say, "The early bird gets the BERM"

 i wish i lived in BC..fuck onterible
  • 2 1
Where? You mean in Blaenau Ffestiniog? Gonna be a couple of tracks. No lifts, or proper big good tracks as far as the eye can see. And the 2 or 3 tracks will be sh*t to say the least. The only good tracks around are the unofficial ones, or the ones on private land. Health regulations stop tracks being fun with making everything rollable or have crap chicken runs around them.

yep, would be awesome if there was a shortcut from quebec to Bc...like 5 hours of cars instead of 3 days >

hopefully MSA open next weekend

to the guys in wales, speak for yourself, health and safety hasnt stopped there being world class tracks up here in scotland. Ae forest with the coffin jump and the step down is a great example of how official tracks can have big hits on them, there is still the option of riding round them but not when you have any kind of speed and its way off the line. Thats before mentioning the fort william world cup track.

  • 1 0
"mudsweatandgears" its in blaenau ive been there with the guy that started it ceri cunhington (not sure how its spelt) it will be a ace track by the looks of the plans, true about the no uplift though but the part about gethin track geting a uplift is also true by what i have heard
  • 1 0
Just go to France or something...Im going to Europe-Val di Sole, Champery and Les Gets, i think they'll just about do because they have chairlifts ! wheey
  • 1 0
Didn't know about Merthur........ sound good. And yep I went to France/Switserland last year. Rode at Le Gets and it was pretty sweet. Did quite a few tracks around that area and kept getting lost by following random chairlifts :p was mega good. same time up as down pretty much, which is hard to beat :p the advantage I can see though is that Whistlers only just rideble cos of the snow........ Britains already had like 5 months of riding.

Would be nice to live in Whistler, upscale living at it's finest. Keeping some of the worlds scum out with their high priced living really seems to be fairly effective. Not that everyone is perfect, some ppl just seem to land jobs that can support them enough to have housing there. Fortunate!
  • 1 0
 just a little bit jealous..............:-/
but is that an Intense Uzzi I see tucked up behind the Rocky Mountain on the bike carrier in the last pic?
I think it is...........Smile
  • 1 0
It is. That WAS my bike.
  • 1 0
So jealous. Would love to live within a days drive of Whistler. Can't wait to go back. Stoked to keep seeing pics and video from the promised land though.
  • 2 1
According to the TUFRACK site, the retail cost of that rack is about $1300 before taxes and shipping. Get real.
  • 1 0
....and it still requires tie downs that wrap around you frame to work.
  • 6 0
I saw a pic online of someone who rear-ended a vehicle with a loaded up Tuf Rack. Bikes were fine, car's nose was completely punched in. Tuf.
  • 1 0
 what you said :-)
  • 1 0
Hey Coma, check out my version... no tie downs necessary and doesn't take 4 people to install! www.pinkbike.com/photo/5650321
