Product Test -- Ridge Ninja Jacket Product Test -- Ridge Ninja Jacket
After Friday's spinal injury announcements, I decided the Ridge Ninja jacket was a test that shouldn't sit on the back burner for long. Just as full face helmets, gloves, leg and arm pads are now part of most riders' must wear equipment list, so too should upper body and spine protection be an integral part of that group. No one can argue that Downhill and freeriding has progressed into a dangerous realm over the last few years. If you're pushing the limits, why not protect yourself?

Spinal Injuries Take Down Two in BC Spinal Injuries Take Down Two in BC
"Dear co-workers and friends,

After filming on Monday for Kranked V, Tarek Rasouli, a Race Face/Rocky Mountain sponsored rider, had a serious spinal injury while attempting a large jump. Tarek was airlifted down to Vancouver General Hospital and is undergoing surgery today. I spent the day with him yesterday and he was in relatively good spirits considering his condition.

The severity of his injury won't be known until he's recovered from his surgery - the doctors can't say at this time if he will regain the use of his legs. Tarek will have a long road to recovery - our thoughts and prayers are with him during this difficult time."

Kamloops' rider Blair Jones is also in Vancouver General after a road gap gone bad at Rose Hill. Blair is said to be in good spirits and pledges he'll walk out the hospital unassisted within 2 months. If you are in Kamloops make sure to stop by JavaCycle to buy a sticker pack to help support Blair and his Family during Blair's recovery.

Best of luck to both riders for a speedy recovery.

Email best wishes to Blair or Tarek!

Nicolai Announces the Evolution of the Nucleon Nicolai Announces the Evolution of the Nucleon
The Nucleon FR “free-ride” and Nucleon Tandem join the club of bicycle frame built around next generation drive train technology, first pioneered with the Nucleon DH in 2001. The Nucleon FR’s target market is the “free-rider” who is looking for a bike frame without the side effects of a derailleur based drive train, yet retaining the ability to tackle a good days worth of cross country riding as well. Built up around average cross country / free-ride components, the bike weighs about 35 pounds. On the other hand, the Nucleon Tandem is built as the ultimate tandem bike. No compromises were made and the result is a superb bicycle frame ready to tackle such races as the world famous Trans-Alp.

Lowepro Backpacks: Riding Photographer’s Necessi Lowepro Backpacks: Riding Photographer’s Necessity
Apart from having to stop during the ride to shoot images of fellow riders, the photographer/filmer’s biggest problem is being able to carry his equipment. As big as hydration packs are getting these days, I just couldn’t seem to find a pack that would conveniently fit both my photography equipment and my riding gear.

That’s when I discovered the Lowepro line of backpacks that offer sport photographers the space required to carry camera equipment and other gear efficiently.

Golden B.C. Heli -Drop, Mt. 7 Golden B.C. Heli -Drop, Mt. 7
Thanks to Scott Belton at the Cedar House Restaurant for doing all the leg work to organize a Heli-Drop trip to the top of Mt 7. For all that don't know what Mt 7 is about and wonder what could be in store for you. Mt 7 is 7500' of vertical paradise in the Kicking horse pass outside of Golden. This mountain has slopes in excess 55 Degree's and open face cliffs throughout. I took my camera out last week and got some unreal footage from our trip and put together a small video. Next time you're in Golden and looking for something exciting to try, give Scott a call or drop into Cedar House and I'm sure he will be happy to hook you up.

Launch MTB Magazine - Review Launch MTB Magazine - Review
There are many magazines in circulation around the continent, but Launch definitely stands out. A couple weeks ago, my copy of Launch showed up in the mail and I couldn’t wait to sit down and read through it all. The first thing I noticed was the very well put together front cover. It’s very simple, yet very professional looking, and not to mention a wicked picture of Thomas Vanderham boosting huge off a dirtjump.

Mnt. 7 Heli trips THIS Weekend - last minute info. Mnt. 7 Heli trips THIS Weekend - last minute info.
I am getting a group together on Sunday, July 14th At 11:30 and Sunday, July 21 at 4pm for heli lifts from my house to the top of mtn 7. It is a longer flight than from the staging area we used the last time you guys were here. This year the pilot has set a few more guidelines for group size and price. It is still a non-profit event and costs will be share through the group. The bigger the group, the better the price. We need 16 people to make this work affordably at $55 per person. With more increments of 6 we should be able to get the price $10 less.

Upcoming Events Upcoming Events
Looks like there's at least 3 busy weekends in store for those on the west end of Canada. Beginning this weekend, Sun Peaks Resort and the good folks at Java Cycle have picked up the recently cancelled BC Cup from Silver Star. That kicks off 10 days of bicycle mayhem culminating with the Tim Horton's Nationals the following weekend. Big Air, bikinis, good beer and stellar riding are all on tap. Don't miss "Big" Brad Ewen and his own special brand of announcing at the event. Need more incentive? Due to Silver Star's Canada Cup cancellation, the Nationals will also offer double CC points.

Canada Day long weekend Canada Day long weekend
The Canada Day long weekend took us to the North Shore, the birthplace of nutty riding. Robbie RoadGap, Cro-Mag, Nick, Gordzilla, and Michelle and I left the dry 35 degree weather of sunny Calgary and headed for the rain capital of Canada to test our skills on the most technical terrain on the planet. We arrived Friday in the midst of a rainfall warning and started an epic weekend of getting worked, and I mean worked, by the Shore.

Rodale Plans Changes for Mountainbike Rodale Plans Changes for Mountainbike
If you'd like to continue reading Mountainbike magazine next year, get yourself a subscription quick. In addition to publishing just 8 issues instead of 11, it looks as though Rodale will discontinue newsstand sales of Mountainbike and make it available exclusively to subscribers. Mountainbike's sister publication, Bicycle will be included with MB in an effort to increase circulation by 40%. Bicycle's remaining staff have moved into MB's Burbank offices where Zapata Espinosa and the Mountainbike crew will take over product testing duties for both magazines. No word yet on how this will effect Rodale's website mountainbike.com.

Ridge Helmet Winners Finally Announced Ridge Helmet Winners Finally Announced
I know we promised this weeks ago, but with the weather so nice, and some spanky new gun metal grey V10's in the stable, somehow we got sidetracked. Congratulations go out to Glenn and Steve who take home the sweet Ridge helmets.

Why I need that helmet?

To hide my fear and tears of terror, giving the impression that I must know what I'm doing!
