Video: Australian Adventure With McGarry, Craig and Graves

Apr 2, 2014
by Giro Sport Design

Jared Graves is one of the most well-rounded riders in mountain biking with success in 4X, downhill, BMX and now enduro. We visited Graves’ hometown and explored Queensland, Australia, (with American enduro haunch Adam Craig and Kiwi freeride star Kelly McGarry) to check out the trails and learn what makes Graves so fast. In addition to kangaroos and snakes we found Graves busy cultivating a cycling mecca in Toowoomba, with dozens of dedicated mountain bike trails, a booming bike club and a local race series.

We discovered a bit of everything in this part of Australia - rugged singletrack, a freeride hotspot, good surf and a picture-perfect backdrop. Watch these three world-class riders shred the foreign landscape in this video.

Damn, spent like 5 min try to pause the video at the point where it shows his garage at 00:40, finally got it and then realized there is a picture of it right below.
  • 2 4
cmkneeland, what are you? A terrorist? Why wouldn't anyone sell you one... Why would you want to buy one in the first place?
  • 4 0
Are they in production yet? Did I miss something? Are they a bad bike? Did I miss something?
  • 4 0
Looks like it still is proto indeed. Search diamondback.com (and pinkbike) for DH8.
  • 2 0
No i missed something, sorry. Didn't realise it was a prototype!

Those 559 wheels were really holding Graves back, not :-)

559 has obvious benefits above previous wheel sizes, anyone having problem with that should get a simple book on physics. It kind of suck that in 2016 industry will cease to produce 650B, it is good to have options but it is evolution, and you can't stop it. Embrace Innovation or ride thumb shifters and cantilevers.

I'm going to start a say no to wheel size debate campaign.
Every post I see with mention of off topic wheel size will now get a "STOP IT!!!!"
I think I may wear out some keys

 STOP IT!!!

IF wheel size debate would stop, the bike internet would default. What else would keep people by the keyboards? It pumps money to advertising, and money from advertising makes it possible to make sick edits - so be careful!
  • 12 1
If the debate doesn't stop in another six week pinkbike will become self aware and send agents back in time to delete the accounts of all know keyboard warriors at source. Or we will all find something new to bitch about

You are insane... do you want to bring back Catastrophical Failure debate? Maybe you'd like to talk about suspension systems, those bloody acronyms, when everyone was an expert on shock and frame rates? These days people whine: oh new Glory! 275, oh no! In 2008 it was: Shock rate 1:2,33?! I am not impressed! That stupid shock curve bullcrap turned me in a troll... I don't want to live it again.

I sometimes think life was simpler way back at the start when we debated the performance gain using an off-road (soon to be girvin) flexstem
  • 3 1
Just sign up for STOP IT!!! And all the pointless debating will be a thing of the past and we will all harmoniously agree that everything the industry does is right and we all deserve exactly what we get. I hear some fool is even looking to bring back biopace!
  • 22 0
You guys merely adopted the wheel size debate. Waki was born for it, moulded by it.
  • 9 0
WAKI will debate the benefits of wheat bread over white... Donut holes rather than donuts... 2% milk vs Soy... You name it, he's all about it.

Wheel size debate has revolutionized online fighting. First of all, it separated geeks from trolls. For some reason geeks feel better than "trolls". Definition of a troll is very wide, all we may know for certain is that a troll is basicaly any person opposing to a new trend khe khe, sorry technology. Trolls operate on uninformed opinions and pseudo-science, unlike geeks who know so much about science, like geology or gene manipulation. The second thing that wheel size debate brought is that apart from Pinkbike Engineers we see the rise of PINKBIKE PHYSICISTS, fluent in kinetic energy management, attack angles, friction, contact patches, geometry etc. They claim to operate on actual facts, true science, statistics, logical reasoning, while no proper scientific paper of at least PhD level has ever been published in the subject, no replicable scientific experiment has been made. They base that belief on a fine record of their perfectly reasonable purchase choices of bicycle related products.

I think the difference between a geek and a troll is that the geek is never wrong and always had an answer

Hm... I can add that only a geek can be a Pinkbike Physicist. Only a troll can be a Pinkbike Philosopher... there is a guy here that is a Pinkbike Historian

in the future, I can see more wheel sizes. an xc wheel size (29) a freeride wheel size (26) an enduro wheelsize (650b) an aggro xc wheel size (28 ) a light dh (26.7) all mountain (28.2) and maybe a super xc (30.3) and then who knows? maybe more!
  • 9 1
Like randybadger says.....stop about the wheel size. Yesterday in an afternoon ride in a local trail three of us went down a short but steep and fun trail, then hit some ramps and berms and back up the hill at sunset.
There was a nice carbon fiber 26" bike, a brand new out of the store 27.5 and a low cost 29er.
Can you guess who had the bigger smile?

All of us

Cheers

Randybadger. I am with you on this one. You may use "stop it!!!", I will use : "stop talking wheel sizes, you are giving me erection"

Not wishing to exacerbate the whole wheel debate thing, and I will say STOP IT!!! To my self, but i couldt let what i have just seen slip by.

You dont like it and react sending personal messages in capital letters when somebody gives you advice but can do it yourself???

I feel sorry for you
  • 2 1
It's called comedy. Read the start of this thread. It's a light hearted stab at the constant pointless wheel debate that keeps popping up and saying the same thing over and over again. The STOP IT!!! Wasn't aimed at you, it appeared shortly before I posted.
  • 2 2
If you are opinionated or take offence easily I would say the pinkbike forum is no place for you sir Smile
  • 1 3
randy, my comment wasnt for you, I support yours. sorry for the missunderstanding. My comment was for waki.

 No offence, and none taken.

Real Talk, I automatically click on anything with Jared Graves in the title as he is one of the best ever all-around athletes in the sport and is incredibly humble to boot.
  • 7 2
Adam Craig pushing his comfort zone a bit? Cool to see him on a DH sled. Always good to see Graves ride. And who is this McGarry kid? (j/k) I'd like to see more Marzocchi 380s out there, but will they work with the new 559 wheel size? And if they do, will the combo be called 939?
  • 10 0
Pushing his comfort zone? Homeboy used to pay for his XC race entries by winning New England DH races. Craig has got plenty of talent to go along with all that superhuman fitness.
  • 2 0
Not surprised. Still, any DHer riding with McGarry might find himself pushing his comfort zone, and vice versa.
  • 3 0
I've said it before and I'll say it again. If I had to choose one BRO in the MTB industry to hang out with, McGazza would be at the very top of the list. Every time I see a video of him I just mellow out and get amped to ride all at the same time.
  • 3 0
I reckon thats the street where you have to park diagonally facing out or get fined! My wheely skills would have me looking for new lowers and a couple of teeth!
  • 1 0
Graves is lean because he was competing in XC not too long ago. The man always finds a way to keep his cycling fitness above and beyond without getting bored of the same discipline. He does that while the cycling world tries to sell us wheel sizes down our throats.
  • 4 0
Impressve. Mcgazza able to wheelie with his front axle on.

Graves has an almost identical riding style to Matt Hunter.
  • 4 0
But the only difference is that Matt is not as fast as JG! Smile

So sick seeing a video with my local trails in it. A shame not much of Toowoomba was actually shown.
Where were those big jumps?
  • 3 1
Agree-last time i looked toowoomba was nowhere near Byron Bay lighthouse........
  • 1 0
The jumps were at a track on the gold coast called the outlook there are some pretty big jumps there the biggest being a honest 40ft double at the mo its push runs only as the outlook riders alliance are working with the local council to try and make this area as a legal freeride/dh track,so no shuttles are aloud, which is kind of funny seeing that they look like they were doing shuttles, some how I guess if you are a little famous you can get away with it as the last I heard the club advised that if you shuttle you will get in big trouble ,I wonder if the club gave them a smack on the hands for doing that then lol.
  • 1 0
I built those Byron trails, awesome to see them being broardcast to the world
  • 2 0
TyranT21 - where about's are the Byron trails. Look amazing!
  • 1 0
@kiwimike71, being from Toowoomba and having ridden at Outlook. The downhill with the shuttling scenes is a local Toowoomba trail, as are the large majority of the trails which are shown
  • 1 0
Byron Bay Farmstay, and the lighthouse which is national park and probably get told off if you ride them. PM me if you want more local info.
