Bike Check: Kyle Strait's Vitus VT-01 - Red Bull Rampage 2023

Oct 10, 2023
by Dario DiGiulio

It seems just about every bike rolling into Rampage features some sort of custom finish work, be it subtle touches or full-on productions. Deservedly on the latter end of that spectrum is Kyle Strait's Vitus VT-01, with a paint job befitting the Rampage regular and two-time winner.

The bike's look was designed by Vitus' graphic designer Steven Mooney, and was brought to life by pro painter Jake Wilkins. Inspired by the Western Americana glitz and glam of the Nudie suit - the one-off statement pieces worn by midcentury country stars - this VT-01 sports some beautiful and unique finishing work.

This looks to be a Works reach-adjust headset, tweaking the prototype's geometry a bit.

In addition to being a custom paint job, this is also the first prototype in Vitus' Gravity Project, meant to steer the direction of the brand in the years to come. A pretty intense proving ground, but I guess that's a good way to prove the bike's muster. Vitus has been pretty open about the development process, which you can learn more about here.

I personally don’t know why people care. Do y’all ride the same lines as Kyle or something

@senorbanana: no but it’s cool to see what people need to do to the bikes to make them usable for the biggest hits out there.

I assure you.... those numbers will in no way correlate with what you are doing on a bike.

@maestroman21: I mean yeh obviously but it's still really interesting.

I think some riders are pretty secretive of their bike setups too but yeah a lot of those numbers would be interesting to know

 Sorry for bei

All of those are fair questions and we know people love to know the all of the numbers. If you hit the link Dario put at the end of the article, you'll get a sense of some of those geo particulars. As for the setup with suspension and tire pressures, those all change once riders get on their line and start to feel the bike in those particular conditions.

Based on what he ran at Hardline, we'd venture to say his current setup reads like this:
Fork pressure: YES.
Shock pressure: MOAR!
Tire pressure: Tubes inflated to more than you'd think.

Lots more to come with this bike and we will be sure to share the rider's setups along the way!

 @senorbanana: love it !

@VitusBikes: love your bikes! In fact, I have a Sommet CRX since 2018. The only reason I am selling it is because I spend more time on my E-MTB nowadays. I would've bought an E-mtb from you guys but you dont ship E-mtbs to Canada yet. I would've also bought a DH mtb from you guys but you only had 27.5 on both front and back for early last year's model so I decided to buy used and build it from the ground up (mullet) and that's why I've learned so much about "numbers" and wanted to learn more.

Appreciate your reply and sense of humor. And for providing us value driven, very capable mtbs. All the best! Cheers!

I think it was a great PR move by Vitus getting Kyle on board, I have always turned my nose up at their bikes despite looking amazing value, this bike looks great and now with the Kyle connection…..
  • 2 0
I don’t think you were the only person being snobby about Vitus, I think quite a lot of people consider them a budget/beginner brand (I would have included myself in that group until last year) for people who cannot afford/not good enough for fancier brands.

I find it slightly ironic the time and effort going into these lovely builds for an event where you can barely see the riders/bikes on their runs.

Jake, you killed it on the paint!

DIY wrenching, so you have only yourself to blame if the front falls off. Nice.

Beautiful bike, work of art. I wonder if the reach adjust is glued in place to stop it rotating. But that stem can needs rotating 9 degrees.
