Shop for sale.

Very rare opportunity to purchase a successful, established and profitable high end bicycle and ski store in one of Kootenays fastest growing resort towns. Excellent relationship with all suppliers including Kona, Norco, Fox, TLD, Intense, Oakley, Atomic, Armada, Line, 4frnt, etc. Large local and loyal customer base and have territorial exclusivity on most brands sold. This 4 ½ year old business has seen significant growth and does not have a lot of local competition and has opportunities for more
growth.

The shop is about 1000 square feet and could be expanded to carry more products to maximize potential. It takes at least three years for a store to become established in a small town market so this business opportunity offers a head start without the troubles of a start-up. The owners are proud of the store’s reputation and would like the right person to carry it on.

Also looking for summer sales staff. Above average wages, flexible schedule, great work environment and accommodations can be made available. Opportunity could exist for the right person to work and buy into shop over time. Email resumes or inquiries to bikeshopforsale@gmail.com

Selling to return home to help family, price is very reasonable and will include all equipment, fixtures and tools. Serious inquiries only to bikeshopforsale@gmail.com

i like how this blog doesn't even say where the actual shop is actually located ("Kootenays fastest growing resort towns"), but ill run with it. and how are you "buying" this shop, its rented on a lease, so technically your signing lease rights into your name, then you start taking over payments. and then what about all the gear in the store, are you buying it all or? and im sure this place was built from a loan, so im sure you will be taking over those payments too... sounds like to many "black holes" in this deal for me...

^^ You sure are jumping to a lot of conclusions based on no concrete information. Perhaps you should email the provided address with your concerns. Maybe you'll learn what it is that you'd like to know.

^^^ your right brule, im just pointing out things i see in THIS blog, if i was really interested in purchasing a shop, i would email them and get the info, but since i don't have the money, or the patience to start my own store, ill just stick to commenting on what i feel and ride my bike. however, if they are trying to find actual buyers on this site, they should include a little more information so people know what they are getting into even before they take the time to send a email.

Konaclump The whole idea is it is an established business. Thats hard to do. So figure it this way, you are paying for the established part of it. Same with buying any business. Its hard to start one from scratch. It takes mass advertising, hard work, insane hours, huge debt. After 4 years you will have a more set client base. He already has the whole sale accounts set up for numerous companies like mentioned, etc. Basically all the stuff that sucks to do is already done, now it just needs to be ran, and allowed to grow. Simple.

Think outside the box Big Grin

The idea is to buy the bussiness . pay the owner, and then you become the owner . You are right, you buy the company, then you own all of the company's assets, inventory , tools and such . the stores employees work for you , and the lease o n the building is just transfered to your name, as well as any other outstanding loans and or debts .

t3h1337r is right on the money - and though there are maybe a few things that of course would need attention to like leasing and all that - but any REAL person REALLY interested in buying a shop - A REAL BUSSINESS MAN/WOMAN knows what they are getting into - so all that lease stuff along with merchandise is all usually something that can be worked around when someone is ACTUALLY SERIOUS about purchasing the shop - and yea you can't beat a repoir that this shop has in its location - looks like a shop i would have loved to work in - hopefully they find a bike lover with a good head on their shoulders -

 Official "Pinkbike" sports store
everyone owns a little peice, then we'll all buy our goods there cause we get good deals. business will expand worldwide And it just keeps growing, then you franchise it out like sport check. Then someday a huge company will buy u out and we sell our shares and retire. sounds good? Everyone send me $10 and I'll set it up. hahah I'm only joking.
  • 1 0
 That would be kinda sweet...
  • 2 0
by the way if he doesnt own the building or the store and only leases you basically arent buying anything all you will have is alot of product. thats also not to say that the reps will want to continue dealing with you as the same for the landlord if there is one. you also have to take into consideration if the product in the store is there on consignment or if teh accounts haev been paid off in full. everyone wants to own something but they never take into consideration that there are so many things to worry about.

 First intelligent thing said,
Owning a business is hard, I'm currently making plans to own the one I work for right now...
SO much legal crap you gotta go through... =(

Brodieclan, any business is a lot to worry about. I think you are taking a very superficial look at this situation, and making a lot of assumptions with very little understanding of business take-over and buy-out.

The fact that they may not own their own building is nothing. Most small businesses don't own their own building. Overhead costs are one small part of the big picture.

Knobyz is right - normally you are buying the Business name and everything that is associated - suppliers, customers, all accrued goodwill. If the business is well established, price could be steep, but then it's probably a better investment.

Chances are if it's lasted 4.5 years, it's doing OK. But, without taking a deeper look, that's hard to determine for sure. Any serious buyer will know what he or she is getting into, and will inquire as to the actual financial condition of the business.

As well, at 4.5 years, I highly doubt you're going to hire hands and retire. If it were possible, don't you think the owner would be doing so right now?! lol. It's usually 3-5 years before you can even take any real money out of a business (most fail within 5), and even longer to set it up to run on its own. Most people wouldn't want to do that to their own business anyway, not at this stage of the life cycle.

Sorry to hear about the fate of the owner. If what you say is true, then I'm sure he'll do just fine as he must be a good guy. Best of luck to him and his family.

 Can't anyone read the comments?

Kimberley

Good store, good people. I was in there during early summer. A little small on the sq footage for any storage, unless there's a basement.

They didn't do themselves any favors when they started slagging RCR though, talk about shooting yourself in the foot!

hey the whole town loved them for that our whole town is against the removal of jumps

I've been in this shop a few times, it's a cool shop in a cool location, in an even cooler town. I think there is potential there, for the right person. I would love to own something like this in a place so unique. Good luck with the sale, and I hope Poser sticks around, I would miss it on my visits to the highest city in the rockies.

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. I wouldn't expect him to give all the details here becuase anyone interested should make the effort to contact him. I did do some research out of interest having lived in the East Kootenays for a few years. The Klassens sold their Nelson store only, they still have 3 others including the one in Cranbrook. Its on the Geriks website. The Cranbrook airport is 20 minutes from the Kimberly resort meaning there are at least 2 bike shops about ten minutes away. Cranbrook is still the major shopping centre for that part of the Kootenays and its where most people still go to shop when they want better selection than their own town has. Kimberly has a population of about 6,000, not a lot for a bike shop. There is also no mention of mountain bike programs on the resort website. The Resort is the smallest and least developed in the area. Its lift tech and capacity is significantly behind the other 3 major resorts as is its real estate development. I'm sure there is some opportunity there but the current economy has hit tourism hard and realisticly, no offense, Kimberly is likely to suffer the most. Its local competitors are all larger areas with more vertical.

Actually, the Gericks in Cranbrook got sold last year. The Kimberley ski hill does not open for biking in the summer. There are two other bike stores that sell bikes in Kimberley. Not great stores but sell bikes anyways.

 the other two stores suck
  • 0 0
one carries giant but no good ones and the other store has Jamis peices of shit

The shop does look good, the couch might not be the best use of floor space in such a small shop. I can appreciate the need to help the family but can't help considering the timing with the recession and all. If a full time employee could run the shop in the owner's abscence as suggested that might be the way to go.

1000sqft? holy crap, that's pretty small.

I had a 1200sqft store and I was bustin' at the seams. Moved to a 1500sqft location and I was still hurting for space. I got out of the retail - "store front" for several reasons. Don't know how you can turn it on such a small floor plan.

hey i dont want to buy it , I want to live there...

What is real estate like in the area? Is it expensive/difficult to find a home in the area? My husband and I are thinking of moving up in that area. This would be a dream job for him.
  • 0 0
looks a lot cheaper than Nelson or Rossland: see realtor.ca
  • 0 0
usually its the cost of the BUSINEES itself, plus product. my LBS is for sale also and its $50 000 for the busines and another 150 000 for all products as everything is already paid for.
  • 0 1
Kimberly?! Little competition?! Yeah, you only have Gerick Cycle down the road a few kms in Cranbrook... Gerick only has a few stores throughout BC and has only been around a couple of decades or so...

Kimberly's economy tanked when the local mine closed. That was about 20 years ago but for at least a decade afterwards real estate was still dirt cheap. Kimberly doesn't have great access to a large airport. You have to fly to Van and then take another flight.

That and the snow conditions at Kimberly ski resort have been known to be sketchy and it was quite run down compared to places like whistler. The resort may have been purchased and that's all changed but it is a small out of the way town with a ski area that get overlooked due to its proximity to Fernie, Panorama and Kickinghorse.

Gerick in Cranbrook is different than the Gericks in Nelson I have heard that while the owners are related they aren't part of a chain. Also any shop that gets involved in the biking community in the area will do well, my friend James opened Favorit Cycle in Cranbrook just over a year ago and is doing really well, he organizes events, and does trail building (when was the last time Gerick in Cranbrook did that?).
Johnny T has done a great job with Poser, got involved in the bike community in the area and built some wicked trails himself, and the trail system in Kimberly is pretty cool too.
BTW Kimberly is like 10 minutes from the Cranbrook International Airport which has direct flights to Salt Lake City, Vancouver, Calgary etc... It is a golfing and fishing center too with a lot of Calgary traffic.
Best of luck John, hope your family is okay!!

just out of experience...it's pretty dang hard to open a shop and i'm sitting here over a year later pretty dang poor still but totally worth it. it's nice to do something that you really like to do
  • 2 0
worth the information for sure, could use a name change with new ownership.
  • 0 0
nah you want to keep the reputation that you've built up
  • 1 0
but poser sports? come on dude.. reputation depends on store loyalty not to a name that sucks in my opinion..
  • 1 0
theres a story behind the name dont jump to conclusions John and trevor would go biking on MT7 in golden and they would be on hardtails and would bike with guys on expensive DJ bikes. and the guys on the DJ bikes would be like we'll stop at the first rest stop and if you guys arent there were leaving. so they went Biking and John and trevor would blow by them because the guys were POSERS. hence the name
  • 1 0
Thanks man, I like the story... but sorry still don't like the name.
  • 0 0
if some one where to buy it now for cheap while rcr has shut down the bike park for logging and then when they opened the hill for bikes again they would be glad they bought the shop
  • 1 0
sorry to hear you're selling jonny! always a great guy to deal with over the phone. just wish i had made out there. best of luck to you and your family!
  • 1 3
bye bye jonny T... where are you going now to open up your next venue? at this rate you'll be setting up salable bike slut stores out here with us in the west koots' before you know it!

why does everybody jump off the bridge before it even breaks?

seems desperate to me... selling at the worst time possible...
we'll see you later poser sports
  • 3 0
Jonn is returning home to help out his ma and pa. Unless you'd like to return to ALberta and help run a gas station. We chatted about this and he'd love to stay in Kimberly, but it's one or the other and in the end, family wins I guess.
  • 0 0
I really liked Poser sports, those guys really helped out the biking community in Kimberley!

I apologize for the insensitive and inappropriate comment. i have jonny and poser confused with another personal issue. this board was no place to bring that up. i am sorry Jonny T for implying additional problems upon your current ones. best of luck in the future.

  • 1 1
thats the worst name for a bike shop i've ever heard of. but i guess it's usually the posers that have most of the money to buy stuff. bottom line. posing sucks

More Like our economy is falling to peices and with in the next 6-8 months you will see almost half of our independent shops shut there doors. sad but true. If you talk to any shop in ontario they will tell you the same. where i live there was a shop i used to do bike demos for it was massive three floors said to be the largest in eastern canada. They sold 3/4 's of there store and left them self the rear section, now they resorted to selling only used bikes out there back door... they dont even have a store front any more...sad to see some one crash and burn like that...Selling to retun home to family probably true and if i owened a shop i would be trying to sell now before i had to declair Bankruptcy
  • 0 2
WHy would you have to declair bankruptcy?

Your an idiot who thinks that they are an economist powerhouse. You have no clue what so ever. A shop will fail if they took too big of a risk. Fact of the matter is the shops that are now closing, have taken risks, taken too big of loans, and not been wise. The shops that thought before they did stuff are more than fine. And your economy is bad? Canadians know squat about bad economies right now. Just because you are next the the USA you don't know everything.

Truth is, any place failing in Canada is THEIR OWN fault, because it's not you with the crisis right now... at all. Its the US. Our business is hurting yours simple. Buuut being your your own country you guys should be able to survive without us buying all your stuff. If you have to survive on us business in Canada you shouldn't be in business in the first place... simple.
  • 1 0
You're not very bright are you? As a recent transplant to Canada from the US, it is bad here and getting worse. The problem is that the US is the largest importer of Canadian products. It supplies about 1/3 of all the oil the US consumes and lets not forget lumber and electricity.

The economy isn't as bad yet, but the Bush admin made damn sure everyone around it would suffer. The US has got Canada by the economic balls. Out of good will Canada made some bad trading agreements with the US and is suffering for them now.

Pull your head out, the world is in serious shit because of the US and it's policies of the last 8 years. Let's hope Obama can pull it out.
  • 0 0
no, they are in their OWN shit. They shouldn't have had to rely on exports as much. Same with us. Every country is liable for their own economy... simple. And no, the world is not in serious shit because of our policies. There have been many issues going on un related to the US. Stop watching cnn or msnbc.
