Brent Thompson has passed away.

Feb 19, 2009
by Tyler Maine
Brent Thomson, Godfather and Trail Master of Bootleg Canyon has passed away after experiencing recovery complications after under going heart surgery last month.

Brent's Job Provided No Health Insurance - PayPal Donations Needed to aid the family in covering the large amount of medical bills that have come from this great loss to the mountain bike community. While everyone who has ridden the trails at Bootleg can attest, Brent's dedication to creating, maintaining and promoting the trails of Bootleg Canyon has created one of the most lauded riding areas in the Southwest. Unfortunately his passion for trail building came without a health insurance policy.

Brent's hospital expenses are estimated to grow to hundreds of thousands of dollars, so any help that his friends in the bicycle industry can provide will be graciously appreciated. Click on the link below to donate securely with Debit, Credit, PayPal and Bank accounts. It is simple, quick and safe. Brent's family and friends send you appreciation in advance.

About Bootleg Canyon-

Bootleg Canyon Mountain Bike Park is an extensive network of World Class Downhill and Cross Country mountain bike trails located in Boulder City, Nevada. The area has been visited by riders from as far away as Japan and Germany and has been written up in magazines around the world. The International Mountain Bike Association has certified one of the XC trails as an Epic Ride, a title given out only 18 times so far.

Boulder City is located approximately 40 minutes south east of Las Vegas by the Hoover Dam and beautiful Lake Mead. The riding season is year round, however, temperatures average around 100 degrees Fahrenheit from June through August, so mid-day riding is difficult. If you do decide to come in the summer be sure to bring plenty of water and maybe some head lamps for a night ride. Be sure to check out our sponsors while you're in town for some great Boulder City hospitality.

this right here is why we need universal health insurance. this amazing man should be allowed to be amazing like he was without having to worry about healthcare. And especially in mourning his family shouldn't have to worry about expenses. this makes me sick... but r.i.p. big guy

What I think, is the fact, that we are the first generation of mountain bikers, which has to deal with the people passing away. MTBiking is very young discipline so we will now hear about more and more "goodfathers" leaving us to ride on never ending trails, somewhere above us. That is sad to hear that someopne has died, especially when it wasn't his time. I can only wish him to RIDE in peace. Probably I'll never ever ride trails builded by him, but I'll donate his family with few $.Once again - RIDE IN PEACE.

this is very sad but we DO NOT need universal health care. Us americans are already getting slammed into the ground because of govt because they cant do anything right. why the hell should they be in charge of our health

"There I was, back in the wild again
And I felt right at home where I belong
I had that feelin' comin' over me again
Just like it happened so many times before

The spirit of the woods is like an old good friend
It makes me feel warm and good inside
I knew his name and it was good to see him again
'Cuz in the wind he's still alive"

Brett was responsible for so much of the progression and evolution of riding in southern Nevada. He is a pioneer and all of us who have ridden at Bootleg Canyon are better people for his efforts. I think all of us who were at Mob in Mojave last weekend felt his presence even though he was in the hospital. R.I.P Brett. The trails in heaven will be waiting for you.

Super chill guy. Upon meeting him my first time at Bootleg, he was nice enough to invite me and my friends down to his place for some beers. We need more people like Brent in this world. He will be missed.

Huge loss R.I.P, How ever, Stinky Spot you are strait stupid, i dont want to wait 9 months to get surgery with a universal health care program that this commie idiot obama is trying to force down our throats.

I have ridden trails all over the west and Bootleg's are definetly some of the best. When you think about how difficult it must have been to carve out and maintain those trails you MUST have respect for Brent. All I can say is "Thanks for all your hard work Brent!" You were one of a kind.

RESPECT and RIP brotha.....

R.I.P. he sounds like he was an amazing man its really too bad his family has to pay for the healthcare its free here in canada, except i dont know if we are covered for heart surgury
  • 1 1
R.I.P. Bootleg Canyon will miss you. I would never want universal health care....ever! I have been to canada and have actually been a patient in a canadian hospital, and the health care in canada is terrible.

That's ok for you to say if you can afford health insurance in the USA. Just think about your fellow Americans who don't have cover. I'm so glad I live in Australia where we have free health cover (you can buy health insurance if you want to and can afford it. It enables you to get elective surgery quicker). Our free system certainly isn't perfect but at least every citizen can get care when they need it.
I'm not submitting this reply to start some long argument - just expressing my opinion.
This is a sad occasion - RIP Brent Thompson.
