Reminiscing about when it was possible to do a reasonably mid-budget trip to Whistler from the UK. I don't think I'll never lay eyes on the place again.
  • 1 2
 Have you priced it up?

much
  • 8 0
 @Jordmackay: One MILLION pounds.
  • 4 1
@Jordmackay: Yeah and since Air BnB have taken over the entire west coast of North America and Zoom Airlines went bust it's about 3 times the price of my last visit. Also the GBP is now junk

@TommyNunchuck: The Canadian dollar isn't doing well either so a lot of people are in the same boat. I know a lot people that have given up on hotels and house rentals in Whistler and either camp at sites near Whistler or just in the bush or rent an RV or trailer and go to one campsite in the village.

@WestC0astWanderer: don't forget the Squamish Walmart parking lot!
  • 4 0
@poleczechy: that just got cleared out.
  • 4 0
@poleczechy: Most parking lots now don't let people camp overnight here anymore. Companies being dicks/people messing it up for the rest of us by leaving trash behind, playing loud music and being generally obnoxious. It sucks because everything is so expensive now.

I'm going this year and we're staying for less than $100/night/person, which isn't much more than what I used to pay for snowboarding trips 15 years ago.

The key now (as it was then) is to get a good sized group and double up rooms -- a 3/br condo that sleeps 6 is the sweet spot, value wise.

How much of Whistler and the surrounding area does Vail own now? I'm thinking this is Vail's biggest "one-event" cash cow of the summer, for all resorts.
  • 2 0
@TET1: I'm pretty sure they don't own any of the hotels or lodgings. They do have F&B outlets and a bunch of retail.

I'm a big fan of North American DH races. Prime time Sunday night viewing on the east coast instead of most world cups at 7 AM.

Out here the WC races play live at like 4 or 5 in the morning. I usually end up waking up when it's about 70% over. I wait for the replay to be available, while trying to not see the results on PB before I get to watch it. At least we get a few races in N. America we can watch live. Wish it was more though.

@tmwjr777: at least discovery made it easier because now i just don't watch the races.
  • 3 0
@adrennan: I heard that! GCN+ coverage is nowhere near as good as Red Bull's was.
  • 1 0
@tmwjr777: hence why I haven't bothered to pay for it. Figured I wasn't missing much

A spectator guide with instructions to access the new jumps and key features on the DH course would be needed to stop me blundering about in the woods mid-mountain. Do we pedestrians take a lift up and walk down? Can we walk up from the finish? Is there a sensible way of ascending the hill rather than randomly bushwacking??

See the Definitive Guide article that just went up. After reading *that*, you know that *this* article ("Everything You Need to Know Ahead of Crankworx Whistler 2023") has the wrong title.

 @mi-bike: Cheers for that.

Good to see Sam Pilgrim in speed and style! @edspratt He's sponsored by Canyon now, not Haibike

The new 1199 DH course looks incredible! Hope we see some good footage!

Can't wait to see the big drop from a third person perspective. That thing looked yuge on Remy's GoPro.

Ah alas, they are doing S&S in the evening.

I hope the jumps are east facing instead of west facing so the sun isn't in the rider's eyes for every single jump. That was a bit silly last year and was no doubt the cause of a few crashes and some toned-down tricks.

Gotta think of everything when designing these courses. Let's learn from last year!

love the DH lineup - finn, richie, neko, kaos, ed and matt, even yoann lol. and all of them on the new track. that'll be fun to watch
  • 2 0
I hope Neko is up for it. I have no idea how he is holding on to his bike at race pace after so much time off. I'm sure he will be great, it's just really amazing to me.

wonder whether Asa Vermette will set down the the fastest DH time. don't wonder about if he does, whether there will be commenters that inform me the track was a little different when the young guns run it.
  • 1 0
Only issue has been if he has an altered course cuz juniors. That’s been the biggest bummer most of the season where he can’t get a true comparison yet…
Hoping he can run full course and see where he’s at! It’ll definitely be WAY high up! As a friend of his, it’s been incredibly freaking awesome watching the journey
  • 2 0
@stormracing: I think I saw that there are 4 ride arounds for U17 and U15
  • 1 0
@bgoldstone: thanks for the info! Bummer to hear but understand why.
  • 1 0
We know he's fully capable of doing it, I'm sure you saw he placed 1st over Gwin at DHSE at Rock Ck (May?) All the brushing off about Jackson / Jordan having fastest times in 2022 was folly, and lots of us knew it - and JG then blasted 6+ seconds on everyone at Hardline 2022. Asa, Jax & Jordan are just faster which they both proved again immediately this year. Maybe that is a fact w/ their age group & younger now, maybe not – but when riders like these guys are consistently putting up absurd times and usually faster than long time pros it seems worth taking seriously or at least not brushing off as track condition on repeat. One of the arguments two is that so much is expected of young riders when they become elites and that it is unrealistic, and that is true but I'm just talking about pure speed – the actual evidence - they have it!

was hoping to see BK compete, i see damn near his whole Pivot team is there again.

Seems early, normally 2nd week of August? Maybe so it doesn't conflict with World Champs?
  • 1 0
It's because they are replacing the main chairlift for the bike park and having Crankworx later would mean not having the lift ready for the winter season.
  • 1 0
 @WestC0astWanderer: makes total sense!
  • 4 0
You could say that Whistler is the Mountain Bike Capital of the World.
  • 3 0
And yet somehow Bentonville managed to take that claim lmao. Bentonville should be called the Blue Trail Capital of the world instead maybe.
  • 1 0
I think I’ve walked through most of the village and, what I can’t find, is the Pinkbike/Trailforks booth.

Anyone know the dates for Rotorua Crankworx next year (2024) can't find any dates on the website

The location? Thanks for that PB.
