PRESS RELEASE: Thredbo Resort

Thredbo Resort is excited to announce that it will be hosting ten consecutive days of mountain bike racing this summer, partnering with AusCycling to bring the 2023 National MTB Championships to the Thredbo Mountain Bike Park and combining it with the 9th Cannonball MTB Festival presented by Boost Mobile.

Set to be a massive highlight in the MTB calendar, the Cross-Country National Championship events will run from 9 February to 12 February 2023, with the Downhill & Pump Track National Championship Events running as part of the Cannonball MTB Festival from 13 February to 18 February 2023.

Speaking of the partnership, AusCycling Executive General Manager of Sport, Kipp Kaufmann, said “We are excited to be bringing the National Championships to one of Australia’s premier mountain bike destinations. The integration with Cannonball will make it a week to be remembered by participants and fans alike.”

Combining two of the country’s biggest MTB events in one location, Thredbo and AusCycling anticipate that a number of the world’s best riders will descend on the mountain to race across all disciplines.

What’s more, the National Championships for the Pump Track & Downhill races will be merged with the Cannonball events, with one winner set to take out both titles from a singular race.

MTB Business Manager, Tim Windshuttle said not only is it exciting to have the National MTB Championships return to Thredbo for the first time in 20 years but integrating the Downhill and Pump Track events into the world-renowned Cannonball MTB Festival schedule is set to be a game changer.

“The collaboration will see the best gravity riders in the country take out the titles for both Cannonball and the National Champs in one race. It's going to make for some unbelievable racing with so much on the line. We can’t wait to have the whole Australian MTB industry in town to experience everything that the Thredbo Mountain Bike Park has to offer,” said Mr Windshuttle.

The Cannonball MTB Festival is Australia’s biggest and most prestigious gravity mountain bike festival, featuring a huge line-up of events to suit all ages and abilities with a massive prize pool. Plus, the action won’t be stopping on the track with a huge line-up of live music and entertainment running throughout the entire duration of the festival.

Event entries for the 2023 National MTB Championships and the 2023 Cannonball MTB Festival will open soon. For the full event schedules and registrations, stay tuned across the event page HERE.

Auscycling combining 2 mtb events to save funding so they can spend it on road cycling. Classic.

AusCycling can kiss my ass, money hungry flogs that will do absolutely nothing in return for MTB. The sooner these guys are dumped for a proper MTB orientated community the better.

yeah it was a better system when MTBA was running things...

Except if there is a splinter organisation it will never get funding from the government. The sports commission will only talk to one association for all of Cycling in Australia which is why all the disciplines were pulled together under one banner. You can have your separate association if you want but you'll have to go and get corporate sponsorship to get it off the ground. Good luck with that in the bogan capital of the world. Also remember Auscycling is an admin body, not an events promoter. That's up to clubs and private promoters to run events. Auscycling just administers the frame work for everyone to operate to so we have some consistency. Not that they have been successful all the time doing that.

@devlincc: They don't do shit so literally picking the fluff out of my bellybutton is more than their total contribution to the sport.

@Brasher: so what are you going to do about it instead of whinging on a PB thread? Do you get involved or are you just going to do drive byes and throw empty cans at them? What do you want them to do that they don't now? Be constructive. Ask questions and see if you get better answers.

 That’s awesome news!

Hopefully that will reduce the crowds for my trip to Maydena and Derby!

"Both titles from a singular race" = Roadies turning the page on the National MTB year already so they can deep dive on their own year long calendar of events. No more work required here Auscycling, Thredbo can organise and run the entire event, including the National MTB Championships, just as they would have already with the Cannonball festival. What an absolute joke.

Dunno, think these events would of been better separate.

Love Thredbo. Awesome place to have an event. Wish there were a few more technical trails to tickle my tires on.

Ride Thredbo the weekend after Cannonball. The trails should be suitably blown out to keep you on your toes.

We need more mtb events, not half of what we have.

I don’t know the east that well but if they didn’t hold it in Tasmania then where else would they go apart from Thredbo.

Daylight robbery auscycling paid too much to them.

Racing is bloody expensive under AusCycling.

Half the events and half the money.

Kind of crazy to think Thredbo hasn't hosted nationals for that long
