Video: Remy Metailler Hits Whistler's Dark Crystal with Olympic Ski Cross Medallist Brittany Phelan

Aug 12, 2021
by Rémy Métailler

Dark Crystal is one of the most popular trails in Whistler for a few years. Located on Blackcomb it's a steep pedal but a great downhill.

Brittany Phelan raced this trail on the EWS in 2018 and finishes 8th! A year and a bit later she grabs a Silver Medal at the 2018 Olympics of Ski Cross. It's one of her favourite lap and it was awesome to chase her down it.

Thank you to the trail builders and trail association.

I admire her ability and willingness to pick up the rear tire and put it where she wants it.

Her bike control is top notch

Indeed, It's such a pleasure to see how sharp is her riding, the way she "steers" her rear wheel. Very inspiring.

I’d never see. Anyone rider like her and then they showed the ski clip and it made sense. Her riding and skiing styles match.

I also admire that she makes the most out of every corner. I don't understand why Remy takes the inside line on literally every corner. Turning is fun. Making every single trail a straight line is kind of lame.

@BrianColes: it's just to show different lines, different options and sometimes insides are better.

@remymetailler: Definitely agree that the inside line can be fun, and it's a good way to mix it up. I don't mean to be insulting but it's funny when a trail builder makes a trail a certain way and people turn it into a straight line and ruin the original.

@BrianColes: he said it in this video, he likes to pick different lines than the rider in front of him

@BrianColes: How did I do any damage? I did not take any braids, I stayed on the trail just took good lines within what the trails offer.

yeah, Olympic athletes are good at everything.

 Was thinking this too. Talented.

probably at some mental level, 'cornering is cornering' - the ski speeds being on average higher means she can see and make lines that us mere mortals can't. super cool.

@twozerosix: Absolutely true. Totally transferable skills and eye/limb co-ordination between skiing and mtbing. This is why you want youngsters to be multi sport athletes when they are developing. Can even feel this advantage in older punters like me haha!

Dark Crystal has never been raced in an EWS. It would be a lot rougher than it already is.

Well now that this “influencer” showed the goods , you can be sure it”ll get a lot rougher now

@neroleeloo: The climb to the top of Blackcomb will probably discourage most folks.

Thank God. I rode Microclimate after EWS and it sucked. Off camber blown out potholes of moondust.

@neroleeloo: Its already blown to shit.

@pahikua: groups and tours of ebikes going up there now.

@Grunk: It was never raced in the EWS... Remy just apologized in the comments and links showing the 2018 course were also posted. But, Crankworks and the EWS do bring a heavy amount of traffic to the area and trails so it definitely could have felt like it was a stage.

Her rear end steering style was fun to watch. An elite level technique, imo, that many riders don't use/practice enough. Will show my wife this one for sure. Thanks Remy!

Wife,,,rear end steering style...there is a joke here but I likely shouldn’t make it.

Was able to ride dark crystal with the shaper himself last time I visited Whistler. My all time favorite trail! Thank you mister @dirtshifter!

Really a great trail! Thanks to the builders.

She's a way better rider than me. And I've been riding for 14 years. 14 years of mostly solo rides though. If I had Remi on my tail I'd probably ride faster and harder.

If Remy was chasing me and recording the experience I would get nervous as hell and OTB immediately.

Wow, very talented rider. Wishing her best of luck w the Olympics and EWS.

It seems my rear wheel spends too much time on the ground...
  • 2 0
Holy smokes she’s a gun. Got great style.

After watching that I’m gonna try and get a little more bouncy! Trails like that are why I ride an Induro bike!
  • 7 6
I bet the trail gets more hammered now.... sigh.
  • 6 3
@jaydawg69 Ya. this would be a great one NOT to film.
