World Record Vertical Descent Attempt on Mt. 7

For a decade Golden, British Columbia’s Psychosis downhill race on Mount 7 was a test piece for racers worldwide, including names such as Steve Smith, Chris Kovaric, Sam Hill and Kyle Strait. For many, it was an annual right of passage trying to haul balls down one of the longest, steepest and demented tracks around. While the Psychosis came to a close in 2008, two riders are now seeking to do the unthinkable: set a world record for “Greatest Vertical Descent on a Mountain Bike in 24 Hours,” and they’re doing it on the Mt. 7 Psychosis course this weekend.

Mt7 shots

Reg Mullet and Mark Haimes (aka Kram) are taking on the Psychosis course for 24 straight hours. (This image is from 2013 where they did over 40,000 vertical feet for their 40th birthdays.

Reg Mullet and Mark Haimes, aka “Kram,” aren’t new to epic downhill sessions. Last year, the duo, which both consider the Psychosis course their favourite all-time trail, descended 43,307 feet in celebration of their 40th birthdays. Not long after, they learned Thomas Frischknect and Thomas Geiger were claiming an unofficial world record of descending 44,516 feet. Reg and Kram figured they could do more, so they contacted Guiness and set up the challenge for this summer.

It was never going to be anywhere else for us, as it's our favourite trail,” says Kram, who hails from Squamish, BC. “It's punishing yet immensely fun and if we had to show someone what DH means to us, we'd send them down this trail. If you have to ride a trail for 24 hours straight, you'd better be loving every minute of it.

Mt7 shots

Mount 7 is steep, gnarly and rough. Just the way they like it.

Reg, from Calgary, Alberta, explains that although they could choose an easier trail, this is much more about specifically setting a Mt. 7 record that we hope will never be beaten, and less about a world record to stand the test of time.

We know we could set a higher number elsewhere, but that's not our motivation,” says Reg. “We want the first Guinness record to be on a trail that to us is the embodiment of DH. We'd love to see someone challenge it at Mt 7, but realistically we know it will be taken out somewhere else where vertical can be gained and lost much faster.

To be clear, for those who know the Psychosis racecourse, they will be dropping into Summit Trail and joining the racecourse at the bottom of the insanely steep “Dead Dog” section off the top. Time and water have not been kind to 'Dead Dog' and it would be asking for injury to ride it many times over when they’re beaten down.

2006 Psychosis finish line

Kram sending it at the finish of the Psychosis in 2006.

It goes without saying that they couldn't possibly do this without a lot of help. A number of people will be helping with shuttle driving, food prep, mechanical support, course surveying and witnessing. They will also have backup bikes to ride if their main bikes require repair.

We are going to need a lot of morale support, which I'm sure there'll be plenty of,” says Kram. “And someone to bring us beer when we're done.

Trying to set a world record on a course as demanding as the Psychosis is not an endeavour to take lightly, and Reg and Kram have been preparing in their own ways. Kram’s been riding Garbanzo laps at Whistler on trails such as Goats Gully and In Deep for hours on end without stopping. Garbo is the fastest lift in Whistler for vertical gain, and he could do three laps an hour. Oh, and it should be mentioned Kram split his training time between his Santa Cruz V10 and a Chromag hard tail bike! But it'll be all V10 this weekend...

For Reg, this has been the year of the top to bottom. Most of his training has been riding his V10 at Mt.7 and at Fernie Alpine Resort on the rough and rocky Timber Chair and specifically the trail TNT.

Mt7 shots

Reg keeping it straight on the relentless Psychosis track.

I live in Calgary Alberta, and am back working full time, have a small trail building company on the side and a fantastic lady that I am trying to keep,” says Reg. “I only have had access and time for two days a week for full time vert tabulation and training on my bike. To increase the fatigue on these limited days, I stepped it up a notch and just pinned top to bottom laps. I carried this philosophy into a majority of my all-mountain riding as well, and put a lot of time in the gym. All that being said, I have been putting in big vertical days for ten years or more, it’s that familiarity and constant pushing of my limits that I will be tapping into to help sustain the physical aspect of this mission.

Both say the hardest part of this challenge will be the pain of simply holding on to the bike on such a rough track for 24 hours straight. They have had their share of injury and soft tissue damage, and this will push the boundaries of what their bodies can tolerate. Reg is 10 months into recovery from sending his not-so-humorous bone through his tricep and forearm in a weird crash while riding in Whistler. The fracture went into his left elbow and he ended up having it rebuilt with around 15 pins and a couple metal rods. But it was the soft tissue damage/atrophy that was the bigger hurdle of the two.

Broken Elbow

Ten months ago, this happened to Reg.

Anyone reading this fighting an injury or illness, I hope you can use my experience as an example,” says Reg. “I remember how distant a strong arm shredding down a trail felt, how impossible that task of regaining strength and mobility felt, how disheartening it was to hear from the doctor that it would be 6 months to a year before I could even get back on a bike. When Kram approached me about going for a record, it really struck home as opportunity to prove how one can channel positive thinking and passion, into a ton of hard work to get back to the health you want and to hopefully meet an overwhelming goal.

There are a lot of requirements to satisfy Guinness. Surveying the course to determine the vertical, taking video of the entire ride, having an official witness taking our photos with a clock at the top and bottom of each run, having a UCI affiliate and a lawyer present at all times. It's strict, and they don't know for sure if it will be accepted until they review it in the coming weeks.

There are a lot of records with Guinness under Motocross categories, but very little for Mountain Bikes,” says Kram. “We want to see our sport gather more representation in the book, so here we are to get it rolling; we'll see what the rest of the mountain bike community will do with it next.

2006 Pschosis Road Gap

Kram on the infamous Psychosis Road Gap. RIP.

Reg and Kram will begin their challenge Friday evening at twilight, and will ride through until the following evening on Saturday, followed by a big celebration. Pinkbike will be on hand to document it all.

The duo would like to send out huge thanks to their sponsors: Calgary Cycle, DVO Suspension, Light & Motion, NRG, Race Face, Santa Cruz Bicycles, Spruce Race Timing and Troy Lee Designs.

A huge leap in technical difficulty over Giger's effort in Davos Klosters. Not to demean that effort but Mt 7 is another level above

There's still this one that no one mentions.

27'000m in 12h. I guess it is not that impressive for you imperialists out there, but that's about 82'000ft in 12h.

I'm sorry what is that in furlongs?

I would like it in units of plaid please.

I'm a little confused.... I have done a lot of 12 hour downhill races, in Telluride I did 76 laps in 12 hours at 1000 feet of dissent each lap. How is 46,000 feet The unofficial world record?
  • 15 2
I have done a 24 hour downhill race not so long time a go in Semmering in Austria,I did 136 laps with a total of 158,576 vertical feet during the race. Each lap had a descend of 1166 vertical feet.

You should be an xc biker with fitness like that. Riding your dh bike down steep and gnarly dh tracks for 12 hours. Dayum.

I recently did 30000 feet in 6h 24m. My hands were destroyed after just 20000 feet. I can't imagine doing 40000. Seriously, I had to ask a bystander for a pocket knife to pop the blisters on my hands. 40000 is pure insanity!

stop counting with feets, do like the rest of the world and use meters FFS!

I also don't understand that unofficial record. I've ridden 60,000 ft vert on a single extended play day at Silverstar just for shits, and I'm sure it's easily possible to put in mega numbers at whistler if you were pinning it all day. I also would imagine the 24 dh races mentioned here would kill that unofficial number. I've ridden the Mt 7 network a ton, and the vert killer is having to shuttle the 14km road every time to get back up. Lifts just do it faster.

When we planned this event, I searched extensively for records and came up with nothing other than the 2013 claim. I was not only surprised it was as low as it was, I was surprised that Guinness had no record at all. Our goal all along was to set a record on Mt 7 knowing that it would be easy to beat elsewhere. It's unfortunate that last years claim is short of prior claims as mentioned here, but clearly they had the same problem we did finding them, when no official record is registered with Guinness or on the list of official cycling records on wiki for example. Although we had been made aware of some other claims, the one made above is another that is new to us. Our sport is lacking in official records compared to MX. We hope to change that, and we want to do it right here on Mt 7. What you guys choose to do next is up to you.

@sadhulow I'm no mathematician but 6.3 laps an hour? That's a 1000 feet every ten minutes? We're you in a car? That's impossible man. 76 desents? Drive time, climb time, etc? 76,000 vertical feet in 12 hours?? Doing laps? Please send me race info to verify that. Not calling you a liar, just wanna make sure you can back that up. Send me a pic of your superman cape as well.

 Reignonme: It's not impossible,

I did just over 60,000 ft in 12 hours at that race (2011).Descent times were about 4.5 minutes for fast guys? with about a 9 minute lift ride back to the top. Faster riders would average 5 laps per hour, the real limiting factor was the lift back up, which varied depending on traffic (it was also in use a public transportation during the race).

I'm sure there are similar stats from some of the other Redbul 12 hour events, Angelfire did them for a few years, and I think Winter Park/Trestle did as well...

That's all I wanted. Thanks for backing it up. You are a god among mere mortals.

thanks, Wink Hardest thing I ever did on a bike (and the pros did 15 more laps than I did...oof.)

That said, if you ever get a chance to do a 12 hour dh race, do it, but I'd recommend going the team route!

Whistler realistically would be near impossible. For half the day you would be standing in a line up

Thinking about riding Mount 7 over and over again with sleep deprivation is some ballsy stuff.

Good luck guys! I just road over 500 miles on my road bike in under 40 hours for the first time this past weekend (I also ride/race mountain bikes XC/trail/DH) and I still have some numbmess in a few finger tips as a result. Can't imagine what riding real DH for 24 hours will do to your bodies.

Good story Ryan. Good effort guys...just hope it stops raining tonight so they can pin it. Nothing like Mt 7 my home hill. Remeber riding it from Dead Dog first time in 2000 with 4" of travel. Most of the trail was single track then. Glad I have a bigger bike now. Here's to Scott Hicks and other builders for a classic of all classics. Good luck, might be slippery up there

I'm 6 weeks into a proximal humerus fracture with almost as much metal work and a 6-12 month forecast recovery, so I know what Reg means about how impossible the task appears to get back to full fitness when I can barely lift a drink bottle. I'm a similar age too, so its good to know that its achievable. Good luck!

Keep at it one day at a time rondo101. Things were slow for the first couple months but I was back doing light fat biking in 3 months. Diet was also very key for me. I always ensured I was consuming enough protein to deal with all the time in the gym. Go get it!

the question is why they don't do a wc there

in their 40s and still rippin'!
  • 1 0
Yeah I did over 50k vert in 11.5 hours this summer. So it is that unofficial claim is truly unofficial. Personally I also think that a record has to account for what type of tracks was ridden. Aint the same doing 50k on gnar tracks as on flow trails.

Wish I could be there cheering reg and kram on. To let those others know, this is mo easy trail to ride. Average riders may get 6 laps in a day from the top before your hands can't take it. One of the most intense race courses I have ever done. Great time riding with reg in fernie last weekend.

Rode with Kram back in 2010 at Mt 7 when he took us around for a road trip of BC. Awesome experience, but the first memory of riding Mount 7 is Kram dropping in and getting cleaned up a lone tree at the end of the first chute as per the chest cam linked below.

Recently rode 14 or 15 laps in a day at Mt. bachelor (Oregon). I think that's around 20,000 ft. Probably could do a little more at Whistler, but even so, 40K+ is a lot. Best of luck and if you can't feel your hands, take five. Smile

All you dumbasses who are questioning the length of this record attempt don't obviously don't realize how gnarly Mt. 7 is. It's not a buffed smooth bike park.

This sounds awesome! Good luck! It didn't say what the goal was, but I heard 70,000'? How many laps is that? I'm guessing roughly 20 @ 3,500' lap?

Does anyone have helmet cam footage of that "Dead Dog" section?
I keep hearing about it, but I've never seen footage of it
  • 1 0
 www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdKLGTQg_b0

It's the very top section and a quick shot of it in the woods. Action starts at 1:10 but the heli shots before that give a good perspective of how steep it is.
