the guy at the top that said every one in the background arnit inprotant is such a twat to say it but sort of write because it's like them showing by bluring them that the importans of them moment that whatever happens next will make the diffrence between winning and losing
Very well said. I have a fair bit of control over how much of a photo is in focus, and by making the background out of focus I'm shifting the focus to the riders. And if the background was in focus it would be a lot harder to make out the riders against the background, this way they 'pop' a lot more.
hahaha. good form mr.hylands! I, personnaly think this is a perfect picture for POD. people on here forget that biking is, just that. biking. all forms and styles are still on two wheels. and its all good. this picture is sick. keep it up!
I don't get all the neg comments. Ian is a talented pro who shoots for bike mag, u think he tried to blur the background on purpose? Thats a sign that he knows what hes doin.thats exactly why some of those lenses are worth 12,000$. chill out boys, appreciate professional photos from the best bike comp on the planet instead of bitchin bout it..... 1 more day till whistler..... Can't wait.....
i really like this pic - i was in the crowd and saw you lining up your camera and thought it would make a cool angle for the dual slalom cos it shows how tight the racing was (this shot was metres from the finish line) and the track looked awesome there when the racers would come onto the same bit of track then split off again - Sweet shot keep em coming!
was it overcast that day? only asking as the thing ive most admired about ians shots is his absolutely perfect use of lighting/exposure etc and this seems a tad dark...either that or its this cheap computer screen...
It was overcast and dark, and I could have made it a little brighter I think. This is straight out of the camera, probably should have spent a few minutes working on it..
ianhylands says I'm sad obvious knows alot seems he's stupid enough to pay for pinkbike when you can get it for free spend your time doing the riding instead of acting like your intelligent because when some one else makes a good point and your to retarded to understand most of it you call them ignorant little twat's a very cleaver statement to come out with when you don't even know the person you saying it about so why don't you stop acting like a genius and go jizz over your sad picture of a pair of shoes nob head!!
jofish66, if you want to insult me please say it English. "ianhylands says I'm sad obvious knows alot seems he's stupid enough to pay for pinkbike" means absolutely nothing in any language. In actual fact you made a good point above, and I didn't say "you're sad" I said your comment was "Very well said." In English that means that you said something well, that it was a good point. Kind of like a compliment if you know what that means. "Seems he's stupid enough to pay for pinkbike" I'm not sure what you're getting at with that, if you mean because I'm a Plus member of Pink Bike that's great, but I don't pay for it, and if you live somewhere where you can use it, paying for a Plus membership is not stupid, it has some great benefits. Depends if it's something that you can use or not. As for santa-cruz-rider666's comment that you're defending, it was an ignorant comment coming from a 14 year old kid with no idea what he's talking about. He's entitled to his opinion, and saying it doesn't deserve to be POD is not a problem, if you read any of my comments you'd know that I wouldn't have chosen it as POD either. Calling it a "f*cking pos pic" however is an ignorant comment. It's a halfway decent pic and simply swearing about something you don't like when you know nothing about the subject does make you out to be an ignorant little twat. How do you know I don't know him? He lives only a couple of hours drive from me, I shoot photos in his town all the time. "stop acting like you're a genius and go jizz over your sad picture of a pair of shoes nob head" - huh? I don't think I act like a genius in any way, although I do have a college education and I teach college photography classes. As for the sad picture of a pair of shoes, no idea at all what you're talking about, I don't think I've ever taken a picture of a pair of shoes...
I disagree "twinsrule". Besides the fact that its super crisp and perfectly placed. The great thing that stands out to me is the two riders breaking right and left at the same time. Just my opinion though.
Hey "big-taco" you have -propped pretty much every comment without making a comment! Grow some b*lls or find a new forum to take the place of a woman in your life. Don't blame your sister like you did on my personal page. PUNK!
Cheers man, yeah I thought that was the same place but looking at it now I see not. Oh and "Seems like everyone would rather have a shitty average photo of someone tricking a dj than a decent looking race shot" - so true.
just race photos that aren't 'extreme' or crashes.... Seems like everyone would rather have a shitty average photo of someone tricking a dj than a decent looking race shot...
ok, this is pretty cool, but (prepares for negative comments) i only think that it made POD because it was in Crankworx. at the end of the day its two guys riding bikes, thats all. theres no amazing scenery, no jumps of epic proportions, no sick tricks or ANYTHING. its just two guys riding bikes next to each other.
proxx there are two different fox brands. one is fox racing shocks and the other is fox clothing/armour(more of a dirtbiking brand) notice the difference in symbols between the two companies. ones a foxtail ones a foxhead. as far as i know they aren't owned by the same company.
"Fox Racing first opened for business in 1974, when Geoff Fox, a Ph. D. who taught physics at the University of Santa Clara, launched Moto-X Fox, a tiny distribution business for European motocross parts and accessories in a 1,500-square foot building in Campbell, California. Within two years, Moto-X Fox was manufacturing high-performance suspension and engine components for racers looking for an on-track advantage. In the spring of 1977 Geoff was determined to show the American motocross public that his products were superior to those of the competition. He created his own privately-owned professional motocross team, Team Moto-X Fox."
@ Raleigh... The people in the background are blurred because if they were crisp, or in correct focus, it would pull your attention away from the subject of the photo, the riders. The whole point of the picture was to show the riders, not the crowd. If the picture was to show the crowd, Ian is more than capable of doing that too. This is known as "bokeh", in case you were wondering.
@core559 - RalieghVoid was referring to Borrocks' comment "all the people in the background are blurred because they aren't important, hehe" (which I don't think deserved the neg prop deluge but what do I know? lol)
Anyhoo, just thought I'd clear that up. Oh, and thanks core559, I learned a new word today
okay core559 that didn't tell anything. no where in there did it say that fox shocks are the same company as fox gear. I'm not saying they aren't owned by the same mega-company. I'm just saying I haven't seen evidence for it. and you stil haven't given it.
scratch that last comment. I did some further research. the company was originally a shocks company. the shox team colours they wore were red yellow and white i think or black. and from that Geoff Fox decided to launch a MX wear line out of it. Apologies to core559 for jumpin on ya. Fox Shox site says nothing about this. Found it later on the Fox Head site(Fox gear)... yes its actually called Fox Head.
Yes, I found that on the Fox Head site. I couldn't find anything on the Fox Racing Shox website. I was going to copy and post the whole thing, but that seemed a little too much.
while you're entitled to your opinion as much as anyone else is, your comment just makes you look like an ignorant little twat. I just checked out your other comments and your life must really suck, all you do is say negative things about stuff you obviously know nothing about. I'm sorry, it must be really hard living in such a terrible world.
I'm not saying this photo should be POD, I would have chosen a different one myself, but pointless negative comments like this just make you look like an ignorant little 13 year old. Oh wait, you probably areā¦.

From the Fox website...
