This is sick and I can totally relate to everything you say about underestimating the work involved and how tedious is can be when working alone, I'm currently working on a similar project. Building whole lines solo, planning to do some kind of video to showcase it after too. Thanks for the inspo!

@daweil: You're onto something, snapped a few cheap Torx bits working on cars and bike but never have I rounded off a Torx head bolt. Torx or Multispline are way better when it comes to bolts expose to muck or water, just ask the car industry...

[UPDATE] Adolf Silva Sustains Serious Spinal Injury Following Double Flip Crash at Rampage

@plyawn: Red Bull doesn’t cover it, it’s the riders responsibility to have proper comprehensive insurance that covers helis etc. Chatted to a rider who had a serious injury in a somewhat fairly recent edition, they had to take on the full cost of the helicopter and following treatment, handled by their own insurance. Perhaps Red Bull may help retrospectively as good will no idea though, would make sense given this event draws from such a limited pool of riders globally.

@spaced: Yeah true, definitely raises the question but perhaps Specialized have kept prices the stable in recent years absorbing some inflation costs or maybe they sell more bikes so get better pricing on components. I think in reality, until there is a serious upturn in the global economy and people see real world wage growth, bikes will also feel like they're priced too high. Perhaps when wages catch up with inflation costs (for most western countries this is still a long way off), things change.

@ciechan: I chatted to some Moto friends about that recently, you are correct in that you can but then the guys I spoke said that you would spend about the same again on upgrades for the bike if you were serious about it, also they need servicing pretty regularly to actually function. Aren't motocross bikes every 30 hours or something? Also sizing is a big cost factor which doesn't necessarily exist in regards to motorcycles, one frame size fits all with a few engine options. Also in terms of clothing, cycling is one of the hardest types of clothing to produce to do considerations around heat dissipation and also movement. You don't pedal a Moto... Not justifying prices but I think the comparison between Moto has been covered a lot in recent years and it just doesn't really stack up in an objective way.

I mean given inflation etc, I’d say it’s probably about right sadly. Costs have gone up exponentially due to inflation as a result Covid, shipping, materials & Tarriffs etc. The Bank of England inflation calculator puts it at around £1700 in 2019 which for the spec does seem reasonable, I think a key issue is wages across most countries have not risen inline with inflation since 2019.

Miranda Miller: It's Time to Change How We Talk About Injuries in Mountain Biking

Very well said, crashes are a part of the sport but it seems foolish to celebrate them because as you say. It could impact Youngers riders perspectives and risk/reward analysis. I've seem some pretty huge slams from younger riders hitting feature way above their pay grade at the local bike parks, luckily largely being able to brush it off but it's a matter of time before one ends up seriously injured. I think there for sure needs to be more focus on the recovery process and the impacts these big hits can have on a rider. I really enjoyed the Tahnee episode of How We Roll where she was transparent about her long road back after her concussion. Teams and brands do need to have a rethink about how the word post crash announcements, to say someone is "fine" suggests it's no biggie. If a rider has had to be stretchured off a mountain or have surgery, that definitely it not fine.
