First Ride: 2020 Liv Pique 29 - A World Cup Ready XC Bike
Dead right. Pricing across the board is nuts. I’d like to see final sales totals of these über bikes when life-cycle is done to see what real demand is. Or is it an exercise in making the brand worth more? As you say, specifications seem to have very average weak spots on ever increasing prices for complete bikes. I’m starting to not even read the reviews of bikes over a certain price point, what’s the point....

Video: Isabeau Courdurier Bike Check - EWS Whistler 2019
Great bike check, and Isa seems really cool, good fun, not too serious and knows her stuff. Looks like she has fun, even at the sharp end of racing. Guess 29’rs aren’t just for tall riders!

Calibre Bikes Overhaul the Bargain Bossnut for 2019
I don’t buy a bike for the potential re-sale value (it’s not a VW Golf). It’ll get ridden, scuffed, scratched and give me a laugh for the 3 years (or however long) I keep it, then if someone does want it, I’ll get what I can as a bonus. Most people I speak to with these say they’re robust. My partners Voodoo Majii full-suss is still going strong after 2 years, and it’s cheaper, less specc’d than the Calibre.

Calibre Bikes Overhaul the Bargain Bossnut for 2019
Much improved over past versions, looks better too. You have to wonder...buy this, add a few choice upgrades (dropper, brakes etc) and you’re still well under £2k, and will rip just as much as an off the peg (and pricier) Trek, Spec etc and will probably have a better spec with the upgrades. Decent riders just using trail centres etc, surely it’s all they’ll need. And cheap enough to replace in a few years. Seems a win-win.

First Ride: 2020 Giant Reign Advanced 29
@lwkwafi: great point. My Trance 27.5 has full SLX (last series), transmission and brakes and it’s rock solid, and the brakes are easy to bleed. Proper reliable workhorse groupset. Previous bike had GX and Guide R’s, the SLX is so much better.

Hope Technology Officially Launches the UK Made, Carbon HB 130 Trail Bike
I think they probably (despite the 300 sales) acknowledge that the HB160 was a bit dated on the geo for the travel. This new one is much better geo, looks a thoroughly modern short travel trail bike, I think it’ll be a success in the UK especially. For the price, it is a lot of money, but compare it to the price of a top of the range Orange Stage 4 etc, it’s not too bad (although I’d personally never spend that on a bike). I’ll settle for some Hope handlebars!

5 Things We Learned at EWS Tasmania 2019
@seb-stott: haha! Every review of that bikes says the front is too low, so it makes sense Maes has bodged a work-around. I’d say it’s defo that more than a performance upgrade. Interesting he said he couldn’t discuss it when interviewed, probably as he can’t slate the original geo. Expect a new Sanction by season end....

Review: 2019 Whyte S-120C - A Long and Slack Short-Travel Trail Bike
@mhoshal: Agree. Buy the bike for your trails, not as a fashion statement. Why ride a 160mm enduro rig round a flowy, Cross-country-with-some-techy-bits trail, when you only need shorter travel. There is a place for bikes like this.

Review: 2019 Whyte S-120C - A Long and Slack Short-Travel Trail Bike
@chainspotting: bit harsh. Not everyone lives near an accessable 'natural' landscape to ride, and many mtb's are family men/women with limited time to ride (hence the daft 'weekend warrior' tag). So a trail centre is often a good option, multiple trails, easy to get to, and laps can be as short or long as you want. So what if it's not EWS gnarly? It's people out riding, which is only good for the sport. These are still mountain bikers. It's all good.

Identiti Announces 2019 MTB Lineup, Offers Lower Starting Price on Mettle Enduro Bike
Saw the range at the Birmingham bike show last year (just), very nice. In fact, the UK brands have some nice stuff about now, Cotic, Bird, Orange, Airdrop, Stanton and many more. A shorter travel trail bike would be a nice option (never go full Enduro!) for trail centres and mellower trails. The AKA looks rad!
