Race Updates:

9:20 am PDT The Elite Women are off for two start loops before taking on five laps. Jolanda Neff leads off the line.

9:29 am PDT The start loops have not split up the front of the race with a big group of nine riders.

9:33 am PDT Rebecca McConnell has built a three-second lead so far, she will be wanted to retake the leaders jersey with one race left.

10:47 am PDT Jolanda Neff takes the win in Mont-Sainte-Anne!

Elite Men

Next up is the Elite Men's racing where once again Nino Schurter will be on the hunt for a record-breaking win. There is some very heavy rain in the Women's race so we are definitely going to see some carnage on course.

It needs to be said again... XC racers are crazy talented to ride that kind of trail on a bike made for speed and not for comfort and doing it as fast as possible for as long as possible. I'm sore and tired watching the course preview.
  • 9 1
Yep skills. XC racers rocking XC tires on greasy roots, rocks, and loose dirt is the sketchiest. Every time I bought an XC bike, I put on beefy tires. XC tires just too sketchy.
  • 28 2
Every other venue needs to take note, this is how you build an XCO course!
  • 22 2
Courtney and Gerlaut again in front of the startline after the warning last weekend. Hopefully the UCI does something against that.
  • 16 1
Yup, like, don't start the race until everyone is behind the line.
  • 10 0
First time I saw Kate do it, I thought maybe its the excitement getting the better of her. But after I saw her do it again and again, it's something else... not very nice.
  • 12 6
@Shimano4ever she knows exactly what she's doing but doesn't care.

Relegating her to the back row start at Val De Sole will take care of that sort of narcissism.

Cheating is cheating - she's a flat-out cheater.
  • 5 1
@Willikers: yep should be grid penalties like F1
  • 4 0
@gramboh: You dont get a grid penalty for starting passed the start box in an F1 race, I think they can choose from a drive through penalty or a 10s stop/go penalty, so about 20-40 second penalty depending on the track.

A 10 second penalty would be sufficient to stop it
  • 3 1
prior to that UCI needs to inspect all riders' jackets, there are priorities to be set!
  • 3 1
@MDW83: I don't understand why race officials don't just say something and back them up?? It's not like they're even creeping forward right before the gun (well, they might be doing that too, it's hard to see). Their wheels are over the line while the starting tape is still up. The dude taking the tape down practically has to walk around them lol.

Also odd bc it's not like either of them got much out of it... watching the replay they didn't appear to sprint very hard out of the start and ended up like 8 places back at the first turn.
  • 20 0
 Crush them Jolanda!
  • 22 5
Nino being such a great sportsman in the last lap when he went back on track and blocked Froidmont
  • 8 2
He finished just behind Froidemont out of podium, i think it's karma...
  • 6 1
 Yea, that was ugly.
  • 8 3
Valero did the same running the bike past Colombo on the muddy switchback section.
  • 6 0
@thegearhound: Colombo was instigating it by fighting to be first in the single-track them soft pedaling. Corad didn't need him to block, nobody was going to stay with him today. Outstanding win.
  • 7 6
Now you see his real face. He's pretty much always been like that. Now, retirement, and good bye swissman.
  • 11 0
glad the live feed caught that, total dick move regardless of whether it is legal or not.
  • 11 1
Hatherley did the same thing after he fell off the rock garden.
  • 6 1
@rp86: Yes but he let Schuermans through right after, it looked like he hadn't seen him before or thought he had time.
  • 5 0
Nino was just having a 'not normal' moment
  • 4 0
@thegearhound: that's different, running or not Valero passed Colombo with his legs and couldn't have caused a crash.
  • 9 2
I think that's a legit "that's racing" moment. It was happening all over the course, in both races, uphill and downhill, yesterday.
  • 11 5
@aaronjb: yeah very selective outrage to single out Nino for that, it happened pretty much every lap on that big switchback climb, the hard uphill right-hander with the rocks, where Hatherly crashed, all over the place. Obviously not the ideal move but I've been there before in races, especially towards the end when you're gassed and have tunnel vision. Anyway, worked out fine for Froidmont.
  • 2 0
I thought the rider riding has right of way over the rider walking. I'll see if I can find it.
  • 10 0
Just how smooth a ride did Titouan Carod put in!!! Looked like he was just gliding round. Superb to watch, and he looked so fresh at the end. Fantastic
  • 9 0
It was the same with Neff. Both of them looked like thoroughbreds competing against donkeys, especially on the uphill sections. They looked to be within themselves, while their pursuers labored. Astonishing, dominating performances from these two - I don't think Neff was kidding when she said she was having so much fun out there
  • 7 1
@tigerfish50: getting out in front early on a course like MSA just keep paying off over and over throughout the race - Neff talked about it in her interview. You just keep racking up tiny bits of time through every little tech feature by choosing your own line without worrying about other riders. Meanwhile the chase group keeps getting hung up every time someone slips/dabs/falls/etc.

Really impressive rides from Neff/Carod!
  • 12 1
Kate looked really good in the XCC, her comeback is gonna happen soon!
  • 11 1
She's currently placing and ranked similarly to how she did in 2018. What did she do the next year? Win the flipping overall! This kind of steady improvement is a great sign!
  • 6 1
She’s got a nice string of top tens. At WC level, that’s still a very impressive result.
  • 11 0
 Rough start for Emily Batty
  • 6 4
 ...again
  • 5 2
Nerves or just bad luck? I feel for her, the determination is certaiy there.
  • 5 3
 Gotta feel bad for her.
  • 15 1
 @AndrewFleming: Decent come back though!
  • 10 1
@MDW83: Yea, 18th is impressive after a crash at the start.
  • 6 0
Yeah, that's bad luck. I'm not exactly a fan of hers, but you have to feel for her to have that happen on her home race where she prepared so much. But maybe she is now angry enough to have a surprise party in Les Gets.
  • 6 0
impressive grit to grind back to a top 20 after that. Honestly my respect for her has gone up a lot this season, she doesn't have much left to prove but is clearly putting in the effort and highly motivated to improve results this season.
  • 13 8
i have no idea about Discovery but i will not miss how the redbull livestream will just cut off when you are watching delayed a bit and then when the end of the race is coming the feed just turns off. Then the replay isn't put up for an hour. so annoying!
  • 5 1
The storm likely impacted their broadcasting.
  • 2 0
If it works the same as Eurosport Player (owned by Discovery) you can go back instantly and when the live feed ends the replay is automatically available. And if you are watching with a delay you don't even notice it, no need to refresh the page or go to another link.

RedBullTV anoys me with that, I don't even watch the race live anymore when I know I need to go away in the middle of it as I like to watch from start to finish.
  • 4 1
@generictrailrider: i'm not talking about the "technical difficulties" its that they end the stream about 10 minutes after the race ends. I've had this happen to me multiple times.
  • 2 1
 @FujiPT: That's good to know!

Being in the PST timezone it's not usually a problem for me as the races in Europe are usually long over before I watch but with these races in North America it's been a gotcha for me.
  • 1 0
Red Bull does a super good job of the coverage. Bart and Rob are excellent. When NBC Sports or FloBikes has covered XCO, it's barely watchable. Be careful what you wish for.
  • 8 0
That was a great sprint for second!
  • 7 0
hope Bec can get back up near the front
  • 9 3
Why hasn't Jolanda gotten a Red Bull helmet yet. Shes a prime rider for one
  • 13 0
Maybe she's already said no to one.
  • 1 0
@CalamityJake: Maybe so. Could be millions of reasons. Just curious
  • 5 1
Red Bull only signs young riders, right? At least I don't remember them giving a Red Bull helmet to a rider who has won a lot in the elite class.
Rumor has it that Mona recently turned down a helmet on moral grounds. Jolanda's reputation would only go up if she had done the same back in the day.
  • 6 4
@juuro: The riders they did sign, pfp, batty, courtney, our marketing cash cows but controversial riders not necessarily known for their ethics but for relentless self-promotion.

Good on Jolo for rejecting poison in a can.
  • 8 0
@Willikers: PFP was in her prime, one of the best cyclists in the world. 3 discipline world champion all at the sametime.
Batty back in the day always did well in wc circuit and in the nationals.
Kate world champion. Probably would have continued to do well if stayed uninjured.
In todays day and age self promoting is where the money is. Just being an amazing rider isnt enough. Got to have that image and I see nothing wrong with that. Where are you getting the ethics thing? Some athletes regardless of sports are primadonna's and whiners. Maybe you know something l don't and that is very possible lol
  • 1 0
@Thirty3: some of what you wrote I agree with some I do not. Not going to get into it.
  • 1 0
 @Willikers: Fair enough
  • 8 1
Mona is coming for you ladies!
  • 3 1
 impressive, she never gave up
  • 7 0
Oooooooo ulloa's gonna have some words for his mechanic Frown
  • 1 0
 just when he was 2
  • 6 0
That's a crazy mechanical. Never saw that and I know no-one who lost a pedal. I mean normally the pedals should even tighten while pedaling. Would have loved to see what he could do in the later stages of the race.
  • 6 0
At around 27 minutes he tagged a rock with his pedal. I wonder if that was the start of his issues.
  • 1 6
flag noox (Aug 8, 2022 at 3:52) (Below Threshold)
@juuro: It's actually the other way around. Pedals loosen when pedaling. This is the way I always figure out how I must turn the axle when mounting or unmounting pedals. I assume the reason is that if there is something with the bearing they wont get stuck to the point where you can't unscrew them.
  • 5 0
@noox: look up “precession”. That’s what causes pedals to tighten as you ride (which is why pedals that have been on for a long time can be very difficult to loosen). You will never get enough friction in your bearing to unscrew a pedal.
  • 1 0
@AndrewHardtail: correct, but the body can unscrew from the spindle. Happened to me last week Frown
  • 1 0
@juuro: I had that happen twice over the course of my XC "career" (15+ years). Once... first lap of national championships, and it was entirely my fault (hadn't used pedal washer on carbon crank). Second time, seemingly freak... pedal must have started backing out of crank, and before I noticed, the resulting extra load literally pulled the pedal threads out of crank

Cool race image of Jolanda, almost chest on saddle and weight behind the rear axle.

She needs a 240mm dropper to be able to ride tech. [Roll eyes]
  • 4 0
And still the "XC Queen of Tech".

I figured that course would play to both her Tech & Tactical skills. The rain made it even more so.
She put on quite the clinic in bad weather riding, even with her almost mishap on the log roll. There's one for Sunday Saves.

Glad to see Haley riding well again too. Though I wish she would have won that sprint.
  • 2 0
@Augustus-G: Haley made two mistakes by looking back twice but at least the second one caused her to fake bobble to try to get Mona to stop her pedal stroke momentarily. It was a good clean sprint and good racecraft, just One look too many.
  • 6 0
great to see Jolanda earn two podiums
  • 5 0
Particularly impressive was how she did it on two contrasting tracks with two different strategies
  • 8 4
Carod owes Colombo many beers... Interesting to see the team tactics playing out on such a technical course

(still an outstanding ride from Carod though - not taking anything away from him)

 Why did Gwendalyn Gibson DNF?
  • 8 0
 "gwendalyngibson:
It is much easier to get on here and make a post when things go really well but I’m gunna try to keep it real Today was really tough, I had a mechanical in the first lap and when the rain came I just was struggling a bit and crashed right to my bad knee again. Usually a DNF is not an option to me but with Worlds just around the corner I had to make that really tough decision. My knee was starting to swell and I feared making it any worse. I’ve stressed if it was the right call but with more time I really think I did the best thing for my health. Maybe it felt like things were working against me today because the legs were there but sometimes that’s the game! I’m no stranger to challenges and I know that these days make you a better athlete so no doubt I’ll bounce back to get that XCO result I’ve been craving this year."

Thanks, @jf45 that's a good call on her part.
  • 2 0
Has Jolanda injured her wrists? They appear to be taped.
  • 3 0
Unless it's a RSI or something happened between Friday and now her wrists are fine. it could be how the downhillers tape to remove strain.
  • 1 0
4:55- It'll be interesting to see how that section plays out during the races.

 Jolo is the fning goat.

Canadians have never been very good at ‘roids.
  • 2 0
 Ben Johnson was.
  • 1 0
@iamamodel: before Redbull there was an energy drink called Cheetah. Ben was a celebrity endorser, the commercial was pure gold: "I'm Ben Johnson and I Cheetah all the time"

LOL
  • 4 0
Maybe not at 'roids but by many accounts very good at using EPO in the early 2000s! Several Ryders associated with or strongly suspected of using EPO to gold and get that Green.

 @ESQDavidK: I know, right?! It's such a Seamus
  • 1 0
 @iamamodel: Ben was an import.
  • 2 0
@Intense4life: Yeah, I know. Just jerking chains. I had a Canadian flatmate years ago and she said that when he won Canadians were all "Go Canada!" and then when he got busted it turned to "Stoopid Jamaican...".
  • 1 0
@iamamodel: lol. I was gutted. Didn’t need the dope. Would have won anyway. Carl Lewis was no better and tested positive multiple times prior to the games that year. What a mess. Ben says he didn’t know and I kinda believe the guy. He was that dumb. Couple years down the road we found another speedster and stamped his card and got a couple golds.
  • 1 0
@Intense4life: Carl, yeah. And let's not forget FloJo: Retires as soon as they announce out of competition random testing, still holds the record for the women's fastest 100 m. Not even Marion Jones on The Clear could best FloJo's time.

Gwen crash out? Anne looks like she crashed out
  • 1 0
 Nope Anne still strong
  • 2 1
@Thirty3: ya, seems like Gwen didn't finish.
  • 1 1
Was curious if Mona was going to cut off anyone like I saw her doing in snowshoe.
  • 2 2
She chopped Bec's wheel in front of the camera like it was nothing. Perhaps it was in retaliation for something. Bec did the same last season to someone in plain view. Sometimes things are in retaliation for inept for unfair riding, sometimes it's something else.
  • 1 0
I've noticed this all year. On the road when you do stuff like this you get a reputation and guys will go out of their way to keep you from winning. Ask Rui Costa.
  • 3 2
 Any punch ups yet?
  • 5 1
Emily Batty must have pissed someone off badly.
  • 7 7
@sonuvagun: Poor Emily. Just can't get a break. Shes still cool af:-)

  • 5 0
Agreed. They both do. Every race. I don't know why you got downvoted.

worst pic ever of a MSA XCO course....
  • 2 3
Wow, the American men really showed up for this one...
  • 3 1
Blevins tested positive for covid. Not sure why the other US guys didn't show, but tbf most of them got lapped and eliminated halfway through Snowshoe anyway.
