British Cycling Announces Team for UCI MTB DH and XC World Championships

by Pinkbike Staff
British Cycling has confirmed the team of riders who will represent the Great Britain Cycling Team at the forthcoming UCI MTB World Championships in Vallnord, Andorra from 31 August-6 September.

The 29-strong team includes 2014 Downhill World Champions Gee Atherton and Manon Carpenter.

Both will face stiff competition from other British riders to retain their title, with Josh Bryceland, runner up to Atherton last year, named in the squad, while Rachel Atherton and Tahnee Seagrave are also selected having completed an all British podium alongside Carpenter in 2014.

bigquotesWe've selected a strong squad for this year's World Championships with some experienced riders in the downhill categories especially. We're enjoying a golden age of downhill racing in this country and I hope to see this continue at the Worlds. We also have some talented young riders who've made the team. Grant Ferguson and Alice Barnes have enjoyed some excellent results so far in 2015 and will be hoping to carry that form into the biggest event of the year, and we know what Annie Last is capable of when she produces her best form. I wish them all luck in their races. - Shane Sutton, Technical Director, British Cycling

Awesome to see Bernard making the cut.

he's one of the most stylish riders on the circuit, proper chuffed
  • 20 1
So this must be the first World Champs in like 20 years Peaty isn't part of the team? Heal up fast dude can't wait to see Peaty back in the squad.

 (yay brendan!)
  • 2 1
Yup this years not quite been the same without Peaty.

So will they all travel as a team? Because that would make a very interesting tour bus if recent revelations of the 'handbags at dawn' are true.

Also, I thought we might have seen Joe Smith in there, he's had a pretty good year compared to some, and YAY for Brendog, go on son!

I'd throw wee Mike Jones in there ahead Joe, he did get a 3rd place this season at Lourdes after all. Although Joe could merit a place because of his recent BDS results it would definitely be a tough call to drop anyone from that current line up. Surprised maybe that Bernard Kerr got selected ahead of the 2 Chain reaction lads.

Who's your money on for handbag throwing?
  • 5 0
Rat is probably my favourite rider, but Gee would wipe the floor with ratyboy.
  • 10 0
The Rat and Bear tag team vs. The Vulcan. LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLET'S GE RRREADY TO RRRRUMBLE!
  • 2 5
Hahaha Ratboy gets his wang out and starts waving it about when Gee (i'm so serious and professional it hurts) Atherton is talking to some people.

Bound to end well.................

@dingus sorry dude, missed Mike Jones name
  • 1 0
@digthehills, no, they don't all travel together as a team
  • 1 0

  • 1 0
Sorry, I went stupid, meant to tag @dglobulator

Still love the fact we have World Champions in both Mens and Ladies DH. No elite mens XC riders though? British Cycling has got to stop shunting them all into road / track.

This is easily the best team in the race. I'm not really a patriot but no other country even comes close
  • 6 1
Awesome team were sending out. Would love to see Joe Smith making the cut as well. Just proves what a great national series does for your Nation!
  • 7 1
Go team GB!! Awesome team this year, I have every faith again.
  • 6 0
Awkward stares across the table in team GB's elite men's camp Smile

 PS: Yay Brendan!
  • 5 0
No male xc rider ... Tell you what, you all chip in for beer and i'l do it
  • 6 1
I'd have picked Joe Smith over Kerr

Glad brendogs back in the game :-)
  • 2 1
As a proud Celt, thrilled to see Manon (obv.) and Mike Jones in the squad, but (and I'm sure the Scots on here will enlighten me) ...Why no Scots in the Elite DH ranks...casting my mind back I recall Crawford Carrick-Anderson doing well on the GB scene, but how come no representation with all of their awesome hills and mountains, only country in UK with chairlift-served terrain, etc.etc.? Seems to be a few in the junior ranks, in XC, too...so any going to break-through in the next couple of years?
  • 2 1
It's hard to say. There does seem to be more different race series in England and Wales, that may have something to do with it.
  • 1 0
What happened to Ruaidhri Cunningham? Not seen him around for a while (podiums at least).
  • 5 0
 BRENDAWGG!! Smile
  • 6 2
No mention of the Trials Team? No? Aw well.
  • 4 0
 Wow, team to beat!!
  • 3 0
There must be one junior downhill woman surely!
  • 3 0
 Awesome team for DH.
But do we really have no Elite men in XC?!
  • 9 0
We do, just none that can make the top 20. British cycling don't see this as adequate to take someone to have the experience of a lifetime and show the world what they can do. They don't give a shit about anyone who isn't on one of their performance programmes, and there aren't any elite men who are.

TLDR: British Cycling are short sighted and stupid.
  • 2 0
Also, a lot of the top XC guys at under 23 level are pushed to go into road cycling instead, so there's a drain on the elite level of the sport for international competition. British Cycling seemingly rather have them riding in UCI Continental teams on the road than in the XC circuit sadly.

 No smith?
  • 2 0
Also surprised to not see smith, he's having a cracking season!
  • 3 0
World conquering team , go Brendawg !!
  • 2 0
Where is Joe Smith? This doesn't seem right?
  • 3 1
 No Jacob Dickson on juniors?
  • 4 1
 Republic of Ireland, no?
  • 1 0
 Ah right!
  • 1 1
Jacob took part in Irish champs instead of British champs so that must mean he's from the republic not Northern Ireland?
  • 3 0
Incorrect, he's from Northern Ireland. Though we generally race over here on a Cycling Ireland license covering the whole island. That's prob something to do with it?
  • 1 0
Yeah that's probably it, there's probably not enough riders to race as separate countries
  • 1 0
He is from Northern Ireland but seem to remember him racing Worlds last year for Ireland. Maybe they offered him a spot and a UCI registration when GB didn't?

Unsure how it works as he only raced at Junior level, is it like football where he can change nationality when in the full senior section (Elites) ?
  • 3 0
I guess Northern Ireland and the Republic join together when it comes to cycling like they do in rugby
  • 1 0
Very strong team. Good to see Mike Jones getting the recognition he deserves.
  • 2 0
Again, a ridiculously awesome DH team. So so stacked!
  • 1 0
strong team. we will win. pity Harry Heath didn't make it in, maybe he is a reserve.
  • 1 0
Re:handbags-read PBs good month /Bad Month for the unedifying news /gossip
  • 2 0
 Go Bernard!!!!!!!!
  • 1 0
The most stylish team yet? May have to separate Gee and Rat though haha!
  • 1 0
 So stacked.
  • 1 0
 killer team however!
  • 1 0
 No Harry Heath?
