 I believe it has something to do with barspins or other tricks where your hands come off. The narrower grip allows you to have more vertical leverage, but the additional grip to the outside gives more room to where the rider is accustomed to grabbing to catch the bars. BMX riders do it too, to the point that they are grabbing sometimes at the bend in the bar.
