They call it “Bikes on Bikes,” and off-road moto riders Cole Kirkpatrick, Chris Fillmore, Russell Bobbitt, and Nick Fahringer have turned it into an annual autumn ritual since the first adventure in 2013. The 2014 edition, “Bikes on Bikes 2.0,” came together outside of Taos, New Mexico, in conjunction with the annual KTM Adventure Rider Rally. A month in advance, photographer and ex-pro off-road enduro racer Cole Kirkpatrick got his group outfitted with Scott Genius 700 mountain bikes and riding gear to accompany the dual-sport motos already available.

Chris and Russ are both employed by KTM, they were asked to be leaders for the trail ride,” said Cole. Russ is a 4-time national enduro champion and still races the national enduro circuit, while Chris races KTM superbikes in the AMA superbike series after first getting his start on the scene in supermoto.

Nick made the drive from Ohio to be there. We all participated in the rider rally and afterward, we stayed on for 3 days to do our Bikes on Bikes trip. We camped out above the ski resort near Taos. We had this perfect camping spot with 2 full days of mountain bike rides on the Scott bikes. We did a 6 hour ride one day and the next day we just rode closer to the ski resort,” said Cole.

These guys are just all around badasses, they can ride anything with 2 wheels,” said Cole. “You get the group of us together and we push each other and the possibilities are kind of endless.”

Cole says: “A big thanks to everyone that was a part of this project. KTM North America, Moose Racing, Scott Bicycles, Poler, Redverz, Shimano, ENVE, Alpinestars, Troy Lee Designs, Roger at Northside, Taos Ski Valley, Andrew Yates for showing us the southern boundary trail, and Shan Moore. All of us except for Nick were on Scott Genius 700 series bicycles.

I want one of those motorcycles with one of those mounts like real bad now! Life goal acquired!
  • 2 1
Anyone know if KTM offers that rack or is it custom? Thanks.
  • 1 0
It is custom, at moment KTM offers no bicycle racks for adventures.
  • 1 0
I fabricated mine to the subframe of a Honda transalp (bolt on). A little different style though but man oh man what a way to travel. Rode from whistler to Coast Gravity Park for the weekend. And around bend OR when I was there b There are some commercial racks for motorcycles but they are for maybe klr and gs 800/1200. And didn't look as sturdy. Let me know if your looking to get one fabricated you can search # judythemotorcycle on Insta if you want to take a closer look.

I saw a guy in the Moab area of Utah with a MTB strapped to the back of a Buell. I admire the dedication to 2 wheelers.

if KTM did offer one, it would probably cost $1000...

So if you wheelie the motorcycle does the mtn bike act like a wheelie bar to keep you from looping?

Sorry, I couldn't resist Smile

I'm looking for Taos locals. I'll be spending June there and will have my DH bike. Are there any gnarly trails around that I can push/shuttle if I don't want to drive to Angel Fire? What does taos ski valley offer during the summer? Anything helps, thanks!
  • 4 0
AF is like a 30 minute drive. If I was spending the month in Taos, I'd go to AF every day regardless of what Taos offers
  • 2 0
I don't disagree, just seeking other options besides the park. Taos has beautiful mountains and I would hate to miss out on any DH trails it had to offer while I'm there.
  • 2 0
Angel Fire has a lot more trails but Taos Ski Valley has one really well built flow trail with something like 100 table tops and berms. They'll also be building more. skipajarito.com/files/bikemap_13.jpg in Los Alamos is just and hour and a half south and has some really techy DH trails with a lot of North Shore features. Los Alamos also has a ton of really technical XC trails and a couple of them are shuttle-able. There's some good shuttle rides in Santa Fe too.

KTM 1190 R. Pretty freak'n sweet Dude. I ride a Tiger 800 XC outfitted with similar battle-gear. Blasting up dirt trails is insane and these things don't cost that much more than a high-end carbon MTB. Except for the KTMs though. Those thinks are like $20K!

The bike rack was made at Metaltek in Southern California. We are currently working on a small run and will have racks available for quite a few models. Look for a release in coming weeks. -Cody

So the bike rack is not in full production yet working on racks for a few different model motos. These ones were some one offs for this trip. If you have more inquires email me at 159racks@gmail.com

Oh, my gosh, I live there! Well, actually I live in Angel Fire, which is right next to Taos. One of those views was of Red River. FYI New Mexico is in the US and there are a lot of forests that look like that, but this video is old since they are all covered in snow. (Angel Fire, Taos Ski Valley, Red River, Santa Fe, and Pajarito are all ski resorts in the area.
  • 1 0
Are you able to ride year round, snow free? Im looking for a warm place to move where i can ride DH year-round. i know all those resorts get snow, but isnt the topagraphy in new mexico diverse enough where there are places its warm year-round?
  • 1 0
Tucson has for sure year round riding, as does Phoenix. Tucson has better access to cooler weather in the summer(at the base of a mountain, so you just zip up lemmon to escape the heat) But Phoenix has better DH level trails ATM. We're working on making things better for the 8" crowd in Tucson, though.
  • 1 0
@whitebullit I am pretty much just a downhill rider, so I'm snowboarding where I usually bike. You are correct: New Mexico has a more diverse climate than any other state. The problem is that if you leave the places where the snow is, it becomes flat. However, I'm currently looking into getting a XC bike to try some hiking trails in Taos or between Taos and Espanola. If your only goal is to bike, you may want to listen to @groghunter.

my brother has a ktm 250sx, gotta say i prefer the japanese dirt bikes, and so does my wallet. BUT ktm does make some pretty serious bikes and they still make 2-strokes, some with electric start even. anyone whos had a 450 with a race cam can attest to the utter pain in the ass it is to get the bike started sometimes.
  • 2 0
I remember the 1995 KTM Duke.............kick start only which why I waited for the 96 that had both electric and kick starters. It takes a real man to kick start a big bore thumper.

Love that rack, want, want. I like the way it drops the bike down so that that the center of gravity is low without it getting cooked by the tail pipe. I would worry about wind at high speeds and/or crosswinds.

But damn, I want to strap my SC to my CRF and DH!

My 2x2 Cycles rack on my Harley FLTRU. I get some crazy looks, but this is the only way to go ride! Makes those longer trips to the trailhead much more fun.

I have a slightly different solution
www.pinkbike.com/photo/10767032
  • 1 0
How do you connect trailer to bike?
  • 1 0
A rail runs underneath my pannier frames and is conected.to the main frame of the bike, like a huge U shape, then is welded to pannier frames with a 5mm thick stainless plate. This has a tow ball fitted. And LED electrics. Can pull any trailer less than 1m wide. :-)
Designed and built by me from scratch.

  • 1 0
I fabricated one myself. What bike are you looking to mount one too?
  • 1 0
Well, I figure if I can find the factory rear tubular luggage rack for the trunk accessory on my Ulysses, I should be able to fab it from there.
