Pinkbike Poll: How Closely Do You Follow Racing?

Apr 9, 2015
by Mike Levy
The drought is over, race fans. The first Enduro World Series event went off two weeks ago in New Zealand, with Jerome Clementz showing that some forced time on the sidelines did little to slow him, while Anne Caroline Chausson stood atop the ladies' podium. No, the defending champ wasn't in attendance due to an injury, but Graves is looking to be back soon, something that Clementz told us he is looking forward to: ''I am happy to be in the lead, but I am a little bit sad because Jared is not here. I hope he will be back and we can have a battle together again.'' Maybe it was the quiet off-season, or maybe it's just my competitive side coming out, but the friendly Clementz vs. Graves battle (not to mention Barel, Lau and company) has me more pumped for the 2015 race season than ever before.

Gwin looked blisteringly fast out the gate but a mistake left him back in 14th with an impossible task challenge ahead of him. Still he salvaged sixth which was enough to overtake Brosnan in the overall for 2nd. He s never won World s before so you can bet his attentions are already turned well ahead to Norway.

Aaron Gwin looks like he's ready to not hold anything back on the track.

Moving on to the big bikes, World Cup action is close to kicking off in Lourdes, France, and a certain young Frenchman named Loic is looking to use his Crankworx win as momentum for what looks to be a promising season. Most of the usual suspects will be in attendance, although the Syndicate's roster has shrunk due to injures, and the track looks like we could see some interesting race lines being used when it counts, especially by a fan favourite from down under. So, how closely will you be following the racing this year? Are you the rabid fan who wakes up at an ungodly hour to eat a bowl of cereal while watching every single racer on the live feed, or do you catch the replay later on at a more reasonable hour? Maybe you just skim the results and check out the photo recap? Or does racing hold your attention for about as long as a trip to Ikea with your significant other?

put me down for "I like to watch the races when I can, but I will never miss a Claudio course preview."
  • 3 2
i like looking at pros race bikes and setups for different courses. unfortunately that's about my only interest in spectator racing. Though i have raced my self.

Claudio's previews are absolutely where it's at!

I'm with MJ and his popocorn.

where's the category for the people who sit up watching the live timing for practice, have the local weather saved on their phones and tell people in church that the only one true god is Sam Hill and that that Jesus guy couldn't turn for shit

He could walk on water but can't handle the gnar gnar.... just gets Gwin to do it for him Wink

I respect the hell out of XC and enduro but I usually only watch the DH live feed
  • 11 1
I pretty much do anything I can to watch it, I get so damn excited its a bit embarrassing! Bring it!
  • 3 1
I race cyclocross and super D, but the only pro racing I care about is DH!
  • 14 1
I never cared much for racing until last year. Following the top 20 riders on social media, and learning about their individual styles can make watching much more entertaining. Now I watch the live feed of every race

Knowing who the riders are makes it a lot more enjoyable. I don't follow anything on social media minus looking up stuff here on pinkbike but still know the top riders and some of the big names in the MTB scene.

Level 9000: I plan my vacation around the WC DH live feed dates.
  • 1 0
Vacation TO the venues would be awesome, Lourdes looks like a cool place to visit!

I watch the replay of the XC races, always some good racing to watched there. As for DH, I've never missed a live feed. Doesn't matter I'm in NZ and they mostly play after midnight - it's just so much more exciting watching it live (and that way I don't accidentally see the results on social media or wherever ruining the replay...)

European rounds are usually on from 10:30pm-2am Sunday night Australia. It makes for an interesting, bleary eyed day Monday.

Bit harder to watch the Windham/MSA rounds as it is usually 5am-ish Monday. Might plan to take the day off after those rounds....

I catch the replay for overseas WC DH races and watch the North American ones live. Never miss a race. I open the Red Bull stream page the day before and don't go on Pinkbike/instagram/Facebook so I don't accidentally spoil results.

Tough weekend ahead. First round of the Irish Gravity Enduro Series is on this weekend so will have to starve myself of social media after the race on Sunday until I can come home and watch the reply. Doing a race and not immediately posting it on Instagram, is that even allowed?? The things ya do for WC action

I'm not allowed to watch Fort William or Leogang because of the stupid junior cert... I'll have to somehow get around it :'(
  • 2 0
Same here, racing DH at Aston Hill sunday then straight home to watch the replay.... def gonna be the best weekend of the year so far!
  • 2 0
Least It's only the junior cert! No riding for me til June, leaving cert is shit, but the world cup being on makes it so much worse haha
  • 2 0
I'm in the same boat as you @philhoward96 ! Soon as I'm done the last exam, bike comes out, helmet dusted off, and I'll be back at nightfall... ✌

I think I havent missed more than two or three races on the live feed since I started watching back in 08 or something. Never missed a Parkin bros vid or a Vital slideshow since then either. Probably counts as following racing............I just always get so stoked to ride when its race weekends! DH racing is just not like anything else, the action is mind blowing. The build up when faster and faster racers are coming down is absolutely great and you know everyone is giving it their all not leaving anything left on the track. Plus its barely 2 weekends a month and only a few hours on sunday so its not like its to much sacrifice to watch and almost always either in the afternoon or early evening.

I only "discovered" the World Cup DH coverage a year ago when I came across Red Bull TV. I've been hooked ever since and endeavour to never miss a round, even if it means watching it on replay. I'm also going to be following the World Enduro Series closely this year too.

Watch the live feed, or replays, but this weekend I'm goin' on a pilgrimage!!! yeeeeewww!!!
  • 1 0
I watch all the races. Live vs. replay depends mainly if friends and I are doing a watch party. If we aren't, I'll watch it live. If we are doing a thing, and the race isn't in N. America, we are generally watching the replay, live if the time is good for our schedules.

Wow surprising results. Probably most people just picked the tactful & polite answer. Blank Stare

Oops, wait, no actually what most people did was not even bother to come in here & instead went & looked at some freeride stuff instead. Wink

I couldn't care less about racing. Going fast is fun, but so is picking my way through an uphill rock garden on a single speed hard tail with a rigid fork. For me, mountainbiking is about being outside and seeing the sights, not going as fast as I can every moment and comparing myself to someone else. I have no animosity towards people who DO like that kind of thing, but no admiration, either. Frankly, I just don't even think much about racing at all.

How closely do you followING racing? That makes no sense... Sober up Mike!

I try not to miss a single World Cup DH Live feed. ---> Vote

Just wondering who else (besides myself) is in the minority "Racing isn't really my thing, so I don't bother paying any attention." category. I know I'll probably get crap for this, but I always considered racing a bastardization of the sport. That's the reason I despise the whole road racing, tour de France thing. So corporate sponsor, go-go yuppie bullshilt. I've always looked at MTB as the counter-culture to that whole scene.

I admire the racers as great athletes, though I really only know about Aaron Gywnn since he's from SoCal :-)

You sound like a jealous bitch. If anyone loves a sport enough and they are blessed enough to have the skill and motivation to be a top athlete and are given an opportunity to get support and possibly paid to do it I'm sorry but they're going to take whatever they can get and since this is real f*cking life the "corporate" supporters that we all hate also happen to be the ones with enough $$ to sign em.

But then without a racing format it could be said that technology in mountain bikes, be it xc, enduro or downhill would probably not be as advanced as it actually is. That drip down effect from race teams is why Joe public's bike is as strong, light and all round capable as is currently available..

Cup of coffee and world cup on Sunday mornings at 4-5am...then head out for shuttles.
  • 1 0
Try to catch XC and DH whenever I can.
If I can't, I avoid PB until I've managed to get a hold of the replay. (Damn thumbnails).
As for EWS and stuff, I read through the results and look at the pictures.

"I hunt every piece of whatever about downhill all day long including every websites, instagram, twitter, EVERYTHING"

It's my birthday this weekend and the only thing I give a phuck about is watching some DH!

Where is option for those that never miss a race on USN? Just wish it was live. Much more enjoyable watching on TV vs Computer.
  • 3 1
I try to watch the live feed, but I also need to ride DH on Saturday and Sunday to keep my sanity.
  • 3 0
I could never follow these guys racing, they're too fast!
  • 1 0
I have always ridden mtb purely for fun, i've never been a fan of racing against the clock. I do like to check out the pictures from races and the recap videos though

Sunday mornings when the DH is on - coffee, computer and screaming voice at the ready.
