Red Bull Mini Drome - The Event

Jan 26, 2011
by Mike Levy
Red Bull's Mini Drome event. Combine the world's smallest velodrome with some brave fixie riders, including Mongoose trials' phenom Chris Akrigg, and you have one hell of a good show. The world's smallest velodrome came to York Hall in the East End of London on Saturday, January 15 in the form of Red Bull Mini Drome. Check out all the fixed gear action from Bethnal Green here:

Check out the Red Bull website for photos and information on the event.

Looks like fun! How many of you are now drawing up plans for a mini velodrome in your garage?

  • 23 1
Hipsters no doubt, but holy hell were they flying around that little ring! Some gnarly spills off the side as well..
  • 18 0
the dude that got ran over looked somewhat like Garrett Reynolds
  • 6 0
yea it was pretty interesting some pretty cool crashes as well, and danny mac was there!
  • 7 0
holy cow! I'd get soo dizzy XD
  • 2 0
Legit way for getting stoned and drunk without taking something at all. Smart hipsters. Getting dizzy looking at it, but it's cool.
  • 4 6
Now how do I make one of these?
  • 5 2
I reckon an Olympic BMX'er with his own ride would take the win had one been there =P Cool event though, would love to have a go.

Sorry, but I could ride this faster on my bmx bike.
  • 2 1
sooo cool! I wish we had something like that here to make a weekly event!
  • 12 6
yeah i fucking hate fixed gears
  • 12 0
Glad Akrigg won. Show them fixie bumming hipsters who's boss. (Yes I realise he was riding a fixie as well, just nice that an actual rider rather than a trendwhore won. Plus extra points for running one of them over)
  • 1 0
Ha! My families from Bethnal Green. Used to be the biggest shit hole in London. Nothings changed then, except maybe more (fixie) wankers.
  • 1 1
I don't see what's wrong with me saying that. I raced bmx, 6th in Canada Infact..
  • 2 1
why the hate on fixed gears? i hate hipsters just as much as any of you (i'm from portland so don't tell me your hipsters are worse than mine) but fixies can be amazing. i converted my varsity and it rides amazing and is the perfect bike for me right now. i really like how much more connected i feel with the bike and don't think i'll be changing it back any time soon.

just because you hate the riders doesn't mean you should hate the bikes
  • 2 2
yea this is pretty stupid if you ask me.. so lamecore..
  • 23 2
Yo, it makes you cool to hate fixed gear! (generic I HATE HIPZTAAAZZ comment)
  • 13 1
I wanna see Akrigg and Macaskill have a fixie off.
  • 13 6
Should such an event ever happen the world, no wait... the universe would tear it self asunder and all that has existed, now exists, or will ever exist would be no more and will collapse in upon itself creating such a small dense speck of matter that it would explode in a fury of heat and matter creating a new universe. Pretty sure this is how we came to be, someone suggested it in the previous universe, and look what happened. Now you've doomed us all. Thanks. Jerk.

I really don't understand a lot of people bashing other types of cycling. Most of the negative comments are from people that have probably never even ridden a fixed gear bike. This is not about how great fixed gear bikes are or how much cooler you are if you ride one it's just showing another facet of riding. I have all sorts of bikes in my collection, DH, AM, XC, DJ, cross, single speed, rigid, hard tail, fixed and even a unicycle and the best bike of them all is the one that I am riding at the time. Cycling to me is about having fun, it makes my daily commute bearable, it makes shuttle runs and bike parks amazing, it makes cresting the top of a technical climb invigorating and remote single-track blissful. Relax, enjoy the ride there's enough hate in the world already.
  • 2 2
I ride both. Fixies think their the coolest thing in town and MTB's dont. Fixie fail.
  • 6 1
IMO i think the whole "hipster" stereo type needs to stop, like seriously, GROW UP. Facepalm fixxie riding is quite fun and very good exercise. Over all great event, would love to compete in something similar myself, just need to get myself a fixxie Wink

Surprisingly good event.I couldn't believe it when i saw Cunny,i wasn't too surprised to see the eventual winner Chris Akrigg,as he loves his fixies now.But another surprise was Danny Macaskill.Overall i enjoyed the blog, and the vid is top notch,i didn't think i'd like it but it was a fun and competative event.Real nice.

I have two fixed gears and a mtb. The mtb is for fun and the one fixed gear is for training/road rides and the 2nd fixed gear is a track bike that only sees the velodrome. Can tell you that it's harder than it looks. If redbull really wants to make this interesting, don't put this on a mini velodrome. Run it on a UCI regulation velodrome so that you actually get track racers. Run it via a bracket. The track racers on one bracket, non track racers on the other. The final would be the last remaining track racer vs the last remaining non track racer.

This event does make more sense than the Red Bull Crashed Ice event.

I noticed there is a lot of hipster bashing, and .... wait for it... this isn't going where you think it is..... I am going to ADD to it! But not in the immature way. Simply put, that one guy at about 1/3 of the way into the vid sums up WHY we hate hipsters SOO much. "It's really good for the fixed gear scene... you know it's like art and...". Why the f*ck must those people make it sound so GAY. If they just rode their bikes, and didn't have to make such an army of fools of themselves, we'd be fine with it. But its like that really Gay guy at a bar, that just HAS to let EVERYONE know hes gay.

One more thing. 90% of hipsters never ever gave a shit about bikes until it became trendy. They were busy being EMO in high school, and then the fashion changed, so they had to do something. I know, because a friend of mine, her boyfriend is a hardcore hipster. I was just talking with him, and like a few years ago, you can tell he was just some skater kid. Now, he's trying to tell me how great his Shimano group is on his bike, and trying to tell me why my gear ratios are all wrong on my bike. Yea, ok bud.... thanks "expert". I've been riding since I was 13, and a decade later I am going to have a scenester/hipster tell me what's what, because he's fashionable. And stop wearing deep v cut purple shirts. lol

That's my rant. Sorry.
  • 2 0
 HAHAHA... nailed it.
  • 1 0
 thanks haha

if i'm a hipster for riding my fixie along with my all-mountain bike, then f*ck it i guess im a hipster! I better start wearing cut off jeans and grow a beard so i can fit into all the other ridiculous stereotypes.
  • 3 0
boo hoo, boo hoo, hipster bash, g*y. Now I fit in on pinkbike.
  • 2 0
Pick your poison son. Dont sit on the fence.
  • 3 0
i already did pick my poison, its cycling
  • 1 0
 well said reveal

I think Akrigg just likes Red Bull. He won their other odd ball event the Cobble Wobble...beating roadies, fixies, and other eccentrics. He won that one on his dirt jump bike sans brakes (not that you need brakes going up hill).

Red Bull will tap into anything that makes their product sell. Who needs Red when they just ride their fixie to look cool? I'm sorry but they got this elite athlete thing wrong with fixies this time. Like I said... Whatever sells... AKA Sell out.
  • 2 0
MTB'ers shouldn't rip too much on trends, every year something new comes along that every rider needs or does, why do people tuck in their race jerseys, why are wide bars better, flourescent gear..etc, its because their favorite rider does it in an add or film
  • 2 1
You are all as bad as the c*nt in town who rides a Kona Shred with an old pair of 888's (or them shitter drop offs)and tells me to get a real bike for riding a fixie round town. Even though I have ridden mountainbike for like 4 years I get shouted at by the mountainbiker bellends who think they are so rad for riding a heavy freeride bike around town and getting nowhere fast with the 2.5 tyres they are running. You are the hipsters!
  • 1 1
no.... read the comment below you.... if you aren't one of the dbags who treats riding a fixie as a spiritual experience then make your fixie friends stop pretending it's artistic expression and MAYBE you will stop being laughed at for your totally badass skid.
  • 1 0
Or maybe I have been riding fixed gear before it was cool? Maybe I think doing a hop barspin on my mountainbike is spiritual? You gunna bash me for being a park rider now?
  • 1 0
yes if you pretend that riding in the park is in some way a religious experience then yes, you will be bashed. any other questions?
  • 2 0
Are you the sort of person that Robert Mugabe would call a friend? You both have the same close minded thoughts Smile
  • 1 0
Sweet name drop. The President of Zimbabwe has a lot to do with your sweet skid moves on your fixie.
  • 1 0
Nope but he has alot to do with your prejudice. There is more to cycling than you and your downhill 'scene'.
  • 1 0
no he has nothing to do with me at all. and I'm not prejudice. I just don't like you. So go put on a deep v-neck t shirt with an ironic statement on it and piss off.
  • 2 0
You just contradicted yourself by following the typical hipster stereotype. Your just like every other mountain biker on this forum. I ride mountain bike first, do you not get that? I ride a bike which cranks do not stop spinning, just a few miles into College everyday to train for MTB, so don't tell me that I am a hipster when I will probably shut you down on a mountain bike too.
  • 1 0
HAHAHA... Nothing is funnier than an angry hipster. Except men wearing womens jeans. That sh*t is hilarious. Thankfully you provide both. Sick NS sub though. You should ride that and light your fixie and skinny jeans on fire.
  • 1 0
Okay, I will let you win as you complimented my NS.
  • 1 0
hahah it's all in fun.. if you have fun riding your fixie then do it up. It's just fun to jump in on the pinkbike sh*t talking every once in a while. But the NS is mint... wish I had one.
  • 5 0
jeeez akrigg wins all these types of events!
  • 2 0
because he can adapt to anything, what a beast. he won that uphill cobble race too didn't he?
  • 1 0
I dont like the full sized Velo-Dromes but i find this is amazing! i love how pinkbike did this beacuase i've never seen coverage on something like this, its just simply amazing. I'm wondering tho wat MacAskill would be like on a track bike tho.....
  • 4 0
is this going to be featured in an upcoming episode of "portlandia"?
  • 2 2
It's too bad some people will never understand to fell the zen in rideing a fix bike. Why is it some people who ride they ride for transportation. Then they get on a fix bike and next thing there so happy. Now I see these people rideing everyday, nite, long distances out of town. Some of these people swear they will never ride another bike again. I ride a fix bike too only because it fells right. Sorry for my rant.
  • 7 0
Not hating here, see my comment further below...but perhaps THIS^^^ is why fixie riders don't get taken seriously. It's NOT a religious experience. It's a bicycle and it's fun, don't church it up and people wont laugh in your face.
And this edges on MEAN here...but I didn't hate unicycles when only clowns rode them...it took some fools trying to hit drops on them for me to think they were f*cking retarded.

And learning how to spell "Feel" wouldn't hurt a fixies rep much either...
  • 1 1
Oh sorry fail not like it matters just trying to be a little +++ I think by zen I was trying to say how everyaction u put into the bike there is a reaction of force and if ur not going with it then ur fuc7.

  • 1 1
In my buddies yard we have the "dizzy drome" next to the pump track. It's dirt and about 6 feet deep with a wall ride, we could make a way better event on one of our drunk nights
  • 2 0
Brilliant, but the track should have a longer straight, after 5 laps ppl start crashing... getting dizzy I guess.
  • 2 0
make it interesting have them race the opposite direction to each other, last hipster standing wins!

  • 1 0
Its only held indoors, because they don't want to be seen sponsoring such an event outdoors, in the eye of the public! lol
