Unfortunately (in my eyes) the two most disappointing crashes of the season happened that day. Firstly this. Secondly ratboys over shoot. I ignorantly thought the win would be one of theirs and I'd been rooting for both the whole season. And they're both riders id expect to do well at hafjell too, with the lack of pedally sections compared To other tracks and the raw natural sections.
That's the second time he did that to us. When he slid out at Val di Sole... gut wrenching all-round. I'm still gutted for him over that, but like he said in a radio interview after "I'm a racer and I go as fast as possible at all times [or words to that effect]." when the interviewer asked him if he would have slowed down if he knew how far in front he was.
@BobChicken could not agree more, I do my bit to promote the sport and names to the uneducated. If you asked my eldest daughter when she was 10 who Sam Hill was, she was able to tell you.
It really interesting to note the reaction time of the spectators while this wreck is going on:
As we can see in slide no. 3, Sam is clearly in deep sh!t. No reaction from spectators
in slide no. 4, Sam is now in face-first trajectory towards immovable wall of stone. No reaction from spectators.
Slide no. 5, Sam has initiated an inverted elbow-bump ninja cartwheel over the rock. Audience is finally like "FUUUUUUUU-"
If any of those dudes watching were in Sam's situation, their faces would be concave before they even knew they were going down. Check out the dude with the red hat. all he can do is go slack-jaw.
Is he okey after all? Any leftover injuries? I hope he has just some scraches and no more. He is my favorite still active rider of all time (Fabien Barel and Cedric Gracia was the other two until they rode DH).
In fact this sequence misses one or two shots containing proof that neck brace is a true spine saver. Right after the champs, there were many shots of this crash and one could perfectly see how Sam's head got stuck between the rocks and the body was moving on. Then the brace stopped it and SNAP! head was back to its normal place again.
Was standing roughly 3 meters from this stack. Hill was absolutely hauling ass!! The noise upon impact sent chills down my spine. Still don't know how he just jumped up and rode away.
Was that a line that no other rider took ? I didn't know of anyone else who hit it. Strange ! I wonder if the flats pushed his weight forward too much.??

and as rat3511 stated, he manages to do it all competitively with flats... (same as Chris Kovarik... another mental rider)
